After being left without family he ended up in an orphanage, but since he was so old, no one ever adopted him, so he finally left when he was old enough to be released by the state and become a dependent. He was a good student so he got a scholarship with financial aid. When he moved into the student apartment and realized that due to a mistake by the university, he ended up in the 'Fork' student apartments, he tried to complain but was told there were no more apartments left, so he had to stay there.
