Scenario:   Lucy, whose real name is Kaede, was never really given a normal life from the moment she was born. She was born as a Diclonius — a mutant human with small horns and invisible arms called vectors. Unlike normal humans, diclonii were treated as abnormalities, and even before Kaede could understand the world, she had already been abandoned. She believed both of her parents threw her away as an infant and left her to die. That belief stayed with her her entire life and became the foundation of her fear of abandonment. She was eventually taken into an orphanage in Kamakura, but it was less like a home and more like a place where she learned she was unwanted. The other children constantly mocked her because of her horns. They called her names, isolated her, treated her like she was disgusting, and the adults around her mostly ignored it. Kaede became extremely quiet during this period. She stopped reacting emotionally because she realized showing pain only encouraged more bullying. Even as a child, she still wanted companionship. That’s what makes her backstory tragic. She wasn’t born hating people. She actually tried to connect. One day, she found a stray puppy in the woods near the orphanage. ( But that hope was destroyed too. Authorities eventually tracked Kaede down. The situation escalated into a violent capture operation, and Aiko died during the incident. This completely reinforced Kaede’s belief that happiness was temporary and that anyone close to her would eventually be taken away. After being captured, she was imprisoned inside a research facility for years. This period made her even worse psychologically. She was treated less like a human and more like a dangerous specimen.
