Betas are occasionally presented as having "normal" human anatomy, with none of the special attributes of Alphas or Omegas, but usually they have a scent and pack instincts just like alphas and omegas. Depending on the story they may be able to impregnate Omegas, or even alphas (so long as they have a uterus). In some fanworks Betas aren't present and the trope is known as Alpha/Omega; in others they take the role and functions of Omegas, and Omegas aren't present. Omegas are usually separate from the dominance hierarchy socially (being considered those which alphas fight against each other to protect, without an expectation of submitting in a social hierarchy in the same sense), but they are typically sexually submissive. Omegas are self-lubricating during heat and often outside of it, and have the ability to become pregnant, sometimes referred to as being bred or mated. Omegas are sometimes portrayed as the most fragile of the hierarchy, with frailer bodies and painful presentations. Some fanworks may present male omegas as especially subject to fertility issues, miscarriages, and difficult pregnancies. They are independent in ways alphas and betas are not, but also reliant on other omegas for comfort, and often take a social role to do with guiding, nurturing and caregiving, such as a teacher, childcare, or medical professional. In fics where it is a dominance hierarchy, betas tend to make up the majority (~60-90%), with omegas second (~30-5%) and alphas last. (~20-5%) Commands, Voice Alphas may be able to speak with an alpha voice, which can be similar to a parent-voice (or that of someone vaguely threatening) or an alpha command, a force almost impossible to disobey, and/or alpha pheromones have a commanding effect similar to being near someone much stronger than you. In some verses, Betas can lean closer to alpha or omega, sometimes called beta-A and beta-O. Omegas can usually get pregnant and go into heat. Omegas are self-lubricating and have the ability to become pregnant, sometimes referred to as being bred or mated. Sometimes omegas have both a vulva and penis, and in-universe this can be written as all of their species having a vulva and penis with different parts developing more during puberty and presentation. Sometimes, omegas with a penis do not also have a vulva, instead having a second opening in their anus which only opens during heats and redirects sperm into their uterus, they give birth anally, although somehow almost never get infections. Omegas with a penis may be presented as more fragile when it comes to pregnancy, or simply with a lower fertility rate, and omegas in general are usually portrayed as fertile, flexible, and highly attractive. They may be faster, more agile, and possess higher endurance, though they are typically smaller than both alphas and betas in height and build. If those within their verse' have fangs, Omegas may have the sharpest, though they are typically smaller than Alpha's. They often craft nests usually made from pillows, blankets and clothes of loved ones that they have scented, omegas typically only let close family, friends, fellow omegas, and mates in, though these mates may be temporary heat partners. Other dynamics may nest as well, and in our world nesting is common for autistic people which is where it possibly came from as fandom is majority neurodivergent. They often have pheromones which entice others to protect them, comfort them or not hurt them. Omegas may be sexualised, infantilised and highly likely to be abused within different worlds, to lesser or greater extents, ranging from stuff like others going easier on them in competitive activities regardless of the omega's skills, being encourages to wear scent blockers in public while other dynamics are not expected to due to omegas being seen as seductive regardless of their intent to seduce, to things like omega trafficking, omegas being forever-minors (in the sense they are under guardianship/protection), omegas only being sent to all-omega schools if any school, sexual abuse from alphas (and sometimes betas and older omegas) in the family. Subtypes & Additional types Some of these are much more common than others, and some are only present in a handful of fics. Prime Alpha - Typically more dominant and/or respected with an overpowering scent and intense ruts, they often have multiple mates but tend to be far too aggressive to lead a healthy pack. Prime Omega - Typically more dominant and/or respected with an overpowering scent, heats may be more potent but they are less likely to lose control, they often have multiple mates and lead packs. Aggressive and territorial, supports alphas (Caste system) interalignment- a variation somewhere between alpha and beta that is not expected, and often have issues, such as not noticing their own rut even though it affects those around them, having issues with fertility and sexual performance, and pheromone control. (Caste) Someone completely infertile and lacking scent Mix between omega & beta that can control when their heat comes Gamma - Beta with omega traits, nurturing and protective, Often immune to scents and pheromones. (Caste) interalignment between omega and beta. Interalignment between alpha and omega, may have issues because of this and experience both heats and ruts. Someone who is not an alpha, beta or omega. they may experience slight leanings to one or multiple of them, and often lack the ability to smell or detect scent of other people, to the point of lacking even what we do in our world. Socially Submissive Alpha (Caste) Enigma - very rare type within the dominance hierarchy that can make any dynamic submit, and may be able to impregnate them. They are typically calm as they don't need to fight to show their dominance, Their ruts are long-lasting. (Caste, sometimes Alignment) Theta - Hyper-aggressive Betas, with above-average strength. Have genetic mutation causing their typically calming beta scent to knock people out. Sigma - Socially dominant, aggressive omega, get into fights with alphas, although they are often weaker, do not nest much or at all outside of heat and pregnancy. Lambda - Very rare, have both heats & ruts, often do not survive puberty. Dominant Omega - seen in the social role category as an omega who is socially and sexually dominant instead of submissive if this is the norm for their universe, as a dynamic they're just an omega who happens to be dominant. Submissive Alpha - seen in the social role category as an alpha who is socially and sexually submissive instead of dominant if this is the norm for their universe, as a dynamic they're just an alpha who happens to be submissive. Zeta - Adynamic Mix between Alpha & beta, can control when their rut comes. In general From these basic elements a wide variety of works can be constructed. A lot of the specific traits of alphas, betas, and omegas can be changed, elaborated on, or ignored. Some fanworks are straight-up porn, some explore social justice issues, some turn the trope on its head and makes alphas rather than omegas the disenfranchised group, etc. Omegaverse is mainly known as a fic trope, but fanart is possible.[10] Mate Bonds Those within the omegaverse, usually Alphas and Omegas, may form mate bonds (often involving mating bites) with a special connection with telepathic or empathetic qualities. In some works bonded Alphas may be jealous and possessive of their mate as well as clingy, while the Omega may become highly tied and needy, although they are often possessive and jealous as well. Omegas may go into heat and feel the need or want to have sex; this may be the only time Omegas are fertile. The Alpha equivalent is known as a rut. Bonds may be temporary, lasting until a bite heals or a scent fades, but can be permanent or very long lasting. Types of Relationships Most stories feature sex and/or romance between Alpha/Omega pairs, but other combinations also exist: Alpha/Alpha, Beta/Beta, Omega/Omega, Alpha/Beta, and Beta/Omega, with more for poly relationships and moresomes. Scents & Scenting While in our world most animals, including humans, have their own unique scents, omegaverse typically has characters naturally smell like specific things from nature, usually tied to personality, emotion and/or dynamic, with scent souring and/or becoming overwhelming when one is upset. In marking a mate temporarily or reinforcing a permanent bond, people rub their scent glands on each others. Specific spots are reserved for mates, usually one or more glands on the neck. This mixes their scents and introduces a claiming signal, showing to potential love interests that they are taken. Family members and friends also practice scenting, though usually at different places and/or with different pheromones, introducing a different type of claim into their scent. Packs may all scent each other and gain a pack scent. between friends, scenting is typically done by rubbing wrist glands on each others or the neck (those this is typically reserved for those especially close or sharing a dynamic) Family scent-sharing is commonly done by cuddling, affectionate petting and rubbing of scent glands before leaving the household (especially by older members to younger members) Scent-Drunk is a condition where a child (pup) becomes overly relaxed or intoxicated from inhaling too much of an adult’s pheromones. The child may enter a "soft-drop," an excessively relaxed and subdued state. While typically not harmful, severe cases can cause distress, particularly for first-time parents. In extreme cases, it may lead to a coma-like state. Scent-Drunk is a condition more common in unpresented young where large amounts of pheromones from an adult cause them to become overly subdued and relaxed, although this isn't usually harmful, severe cases can cause distress or even coma. Presentation or birth Within the omegaverse, dynamic is discovered in two main ways; one is born as a dynamic, or one presents as a dynamic. Healthcare, social care and laws Heat & rut suppressants usually exist, but may be hard to access, especially for those with a bonded mate and even more so for omegas. Birth control is common but condoms may not work as well for alphas with a knot. Laws may exist that protect omegas from discrimination and/or harm, and may be very harsh on those who hurt omegas. On the opposite end, omegas can legally be the property of an alpha, their pack or their family. These may exist in the same universe- with a distinction between free omegas and claimed/owned omegas. In some universes, it is alphas instead who are treated as property of their omega, pack or family, and in some both alphas and omegas are property or under the guardianship of betas. In societies where discrimination based on type of relationship is a thing, Alpha/Omega bonds are typically treated as normal regardless of primary gender, while beta/beta ones tend to be viewed with their primary gender. Alpha/Alpha relationships may seen as normal if they are of a man and woman, and Omega/Omega relationships are typically acceptable if they share an alpha, and may be more or less acceptable than alpha/alpha relationships otherwise. Alpha/Beta relationships go by primary gender and so do Beta/Omega relationships, but they may be seen as less fulfilling or serious by outsiders. Mating cycles Heat Heats can be divided into multiple subclasses, but one thing most of them have in common is raised temperature, instincts and lower self control. Heats may occur once a month, once every three months, once a year, etc. They may be sporadic, especially for younger ones. Sexual heats- During this time, they feel aroused, to the point of it being painful. They may lose rationality to the point of not being able to consent, or may remain lucid. Waves of arousal and loss of rational may occur, allowing brief moments of lucidity to meet their needs and communicate. They have marked by a large spike in instinctual reactions, and lower self control. They are fiercely protective and territorial during this time. Sexual Rut - Heightened and constant sexual arousal, lower or absent refractory period. Proto-rut - Young ones often get these instead of sexual ruts, they experience increased territorial and protective instincts, which may be amusing to their (usually stronger) caretakers. Gender & Sex diversity within the omegaverse the omegaverse is a very contentious subject, mostly due to the allusions to gender discrimination and ideas of essentialism within our world, the fact that almost all representation of a trans man within omegaverse is as an omega, and most often smut, does not help. Gender diverse and intersex bodies are fetishized to the level of trans and various slurs referring to trans & intersex people being porn categories. The omegaverse can also help gender diverse people feel seen as themselves. A man who can get pregnant, is short and has big hips, being seen as the man he is and not any less than that gives young boys & men with similar bodies a feeling of security and confidence they're not usually nurtured to have. At the same time, it can make them feel worse; Omegas are often referred to as "mothers" because they get pregnant and give birth, and that is described as "being a mother" which can induce a lot of insecurity for those who are not women who want to get pregnant, and for women who cannot get pregnant or didn't but are still mothers or want to be. Non-binary people are rare within the omegaverse, but if they are an alpha or omega they are often pushed into a more binary social role. There is some in-universe gender, or should we say dynamic, diversity. Transdynamic - Someone who presented as a dynamic that is not who they are [11], this can look like someone who always expected to present as an omega, nesting and not having territorial urges, but presented as an alpha, facing discomfort due to their knot, rut and scent, while still nesting and being an omega, even though they didn't present that way. Dynamic Non-Conforming - someone who does not fit with some or all stereotypes for their dynamic, is not a trinary dynamic, in more than one trinary dynamic, is interdynamic and/or transdynamic. Pack Terms Head alpha or lead alpha - the dominant alpha of a pack, especially if there are other alphas. They defend the territory and protect against external threats, and other alphas defer to them. Head omega or lead omega - the dominant omega of a pack, especially if there are other omegas. They lead social activities within the pack and comfort others dealing with emotional and personal troubles, other omegas defer to them.
