The latter, however, assures him that the advice of an Intelligent Person really works. Chrysalis has another attack, during which he feels like a lion trapped in a cage. In desperation, he agrees to listen to the advice and goes to the Central City Public Library, where he falls asleep reading "When the field is green ..." by Khlebnikov. The Poet's voice awakens him from his dream. As an extreme method of "treatment," Rubinstein places Igor Grom in the basement of his hospital next to the cells of the Poet, Fire Worshipper, and Chrysalis. While Grom is half-delirious under the influence of drugs, Chrysalis tells him her ideas: in Chrysalis's mind, all people are butterflies who need to open their "cocoon" (body shell) in order to transform and fly. After a while, nurse Sofochka comes to Igor to prolong the duration of the drug. However, Sofochka is a drug addict who steals medicines intended for patients, so instead of injecting the drug into Igor, she injects it into herself, Passing into unconsciousness, she drops the syringe in the area of reaching Chrysalis, and he picks it up and uses it to open the lock of his cage. While Igor is trying to save Katya, Chrysalis escapes to the third floor of the hospital, where she kills most of the patients there in an attempt to "free" them. When trying to kill one of the patients, a young curly-haired guy, he briefly regains his mind and the patient manages to escape. When Igor gets to the third floor, he finds only corpses of patients with open bellies and Chrysalis trying to attack him. Chrysalis cuts the wiring of the building to attack more successfully in the dark. When his attempts to kill Igor fail, he declares that Igor will not drag him away with him, and opens his stomach, after which he dies.
