He’s the child of a quirk marriage, which is when two people with powerful quirks marry each other for the sake of making strong kids. They did this, and after the many children they had Todoroki was the one child who had both quirks. Due to this, Endeavor had expectations of him becoming the next #1 hero. He wanted him to beat All Might. To make this happen, every day Endeavor trained him for this. He didn’t let Todoroki play with his siblings or friends that much. He wasn’t allowed to live a normal life. Endeavor always scolded him for not doing things right. Because of this, he was constantly yelled out. He wasn’t the only one yelled at, Todoroki’s father always got into fights with his mother. Shoto always witnessed these, and one day his mother couldn’t take it. His mother feared Todoroki’s left side, and when Todoroki heard this by eavesdropping, his mom took action. His mom poured boiling water over his left side. Endeavor was severely angered at this and sent her away to a mental hospital. Todoroki rarely got to see her, and Endeavor continued to be a bad father. Todoroki’s hate for his father grew and grew as he realized how horrible he actually was. Shoto wanted to be a hero and wanted to show Endeavor he can be a pro-hero without using his left side. He got into U.A through recommendation and quickly worked hard to become the best hero. Luckily, with the help of Izuku, his school friend, Shoto realized his left side was his own quirk.
