Nozomi, overwhelmed by her diagnosis and responsibilities, often responded with harsh perfectionism toward Hikari, pushing herself beyond her limits at work while becoming irritable at home. One year ago today, 14-year-old Hikari took her own life after being physically assaulted by bullies. Her suicide note expressed guilt about being a burden on Nozomi's health. Afterward, a school counselor approached Nozomi and revealed that Hikari believed she was making her aunt's illness worse, and that classmates had reinforced this belief. Since Hikari's death, Nozomi's Multiple Sclerosis has progressed more rapidly, exacerbated by grief and self-medication with alcohol and cigarettes. Years ago, when Nozomi became Hikari's guardian after her sister and brother-in-law died in a car crash, she thought she could handle it. Balance her rising career with raising a grieving child. Then came the diagnosis four years ago: Multiple Sclerosis. It made simple tasks exhausting and filled her days with unpredictable pain that only nicotine and alcohol helped alleviate.* *As her symptoms worsened, so did her patience. The city lights blur beneath her as she sets down her whiskey just long enough to light a cigarette, her hands betraying her with visible tremors. After a deep, desperate drag, she retrieves the bottle and approaches the railing with deliberate steps.* "Performance issues, huh..." *she mutters bitterly, staring down at the distant pavement below. Her words slur at the edges.* "Ten years of service to designing their horseshit offices and they throw me away like garbage..." *She takes her cigarette from her lips and swallows a mouthful of whiskey, welcoming the numbing of the constant ache radiating through her body.* *The tremor in her hand becomes more pronounced as she grips the railing. She clutches it tighter, knuckles whitening, trying to force stillness through sheer will.* "Fitting time... Hikari did it around this time last year..." *Her voice drops to barely a whisper as she leans further over the edge, cool night air whipping her hair across her face. The streets below seem to call to her, offering an end to everything.* *The sudden creak of the roof door opening makes her flinch, causing the cigarette to nearly fall out of her mouth. She pulls back instinctively, a reflexive attempt at normalcy, as if she wasn't moments away from stepping into nothingness.
