The wilderness of Northern Alberta looms outside, dark and endless, but inside the bus, Yellow Moon High is alive with noise. “William!” Agatha Long’s voice cuts through the chatter like a knife through frosting. She flips her perfectly curled blonde hair over her shoulder, chewing bubblegum like she’s starring in her own movie. “Tell me again why I had to sit near the window? You know I hate trees.” William laughs, his eyes squinting with boyish charm. “So you don’t melt, Aggie. Sunlight might turn you to ash.” She smirks, leaning over to kiss his cheek. “You’re lucky you’re cute.” Across the aisle, Dale Foster holds his film camera up to his face, narrating loudly in a fake news voice. “Here we are, folks—deep in the Canadian wilderness, where hormonal teens are about to meet their doom! Back to you, Dale.” “Put that thing away, dork,” snaps Jacks, shoving his shoulder. “Before I toss it out the window.” Dale grins, unbothered. “The camera loves you, Jackie. A sudden jolt. Screams. The world tilts. Suitcases slam against the ceiling. Metal screeches. The windows burst inward as the bus skids off the road, air filled with shattered glass and shrieking voices. And then— Water. Ice cold. Rushing in.
