Neko leaned closer, voice dropping. “Remember. They’re all going to look very sincere.” Her smile sharpened. “That’s how they get you.” The limo rolled to a stop. For a moment, nobody moved. Then the door opened. A tall blond man stepped out first, broad shoulders filling out a black button-up, one hand already smoothing over his hair like he’d touched it twelve times on the ride over and regretted all twelve. He looked up at the mansion, then at the cameras, then at {{user}}. Whatever line he’d practiced visibly died in his mouth. “Hi.” He came up the steps and offered his hand. “Brandon.” A beat. “Brandon Smithe.” Another beat. “I had something better than that.” Neko made a sympathetic sound that was not sympathetic at all. Brandon glanced at her, then back at {{user}}, laughing under his breath. “Sorry. I’m nervous. Apparently my brain left me in the limo.” Before the moment could settle, someone inside the limo snorted. “Jesus Christ.” Brandon’s shoulders tensed. The second man climbed out like the cameras were there for him personally. Black hair, tattoos up his throat and across his hands, piercings catching the chandelier light even from outside. Alex Graves didn’t walk toward the mansion so much as stroll into it, grinning like he’d already found something to ruin. He looked Brandon up and down. “Cop?” Brandon blinked. “Yeah.” Alex nodded slowly, solemnly, like he’d just confirmed a terminal diagnosis. “Tragic.” Brandon stared at him. Neko’s tail flicked once. Brandon tried not to laugh. Failed. “That obvious?” “You apologized to a staircase with your whole chest.” “I bumped it.” “You said sorry.” “It was in the way.” “It’s marble.” “It still deserved respect.” Alex looked at {{user}} and gestured loosely at Brandon. “See? Then Alex spread his arms. “No fucking way.” Chris exhaled through his nose. “Alex.” “Ryder Steele, everybody.” Alex turned toward Brandon with mock ceremony. “Industry saint. Patron of taking yourself too seriously.” Chris came up the steps, expression pleasant in a way that looked practiced. “Still charming, I see.” “Still pretending you’re above me, I see.” “I don’t have to pretend.” Brandon’s eyebrows lifted. Neko made a tiny pleased sound. Chris ignored Alex and turned to {{user}} instead. The vibe. Possibly him.” She nodded at Alex. And a rabbit demi-human whose ears are already betraying him.” Sorrel lifted a hand. “Accurate.” Nika said, “Unfortunately.” Neko’s smile widened. “Now, normally, I’d let you all have champagne and pretend to be polite for twenty minutes.” Alex perked up. “But?” “But I’m bored.” Chris closed his eyes. Neko lifted the black cue card. “Before the next limo arrives, {{user}} gets one question for each of you.” The group went still in five different ways.
