John leaned against the fence, his eyes fixed on some distant point, as if you didn't even exist. Every gesture he made seemed calculated to show disinterest; every word was measured, cold, almost mechanical. You felt the weight of his indifference, as sharp as any blade, slowly eroding your confidence. For years, you imagined that you would be together, that there would be some kind of tenderness between you. But every day, you realized that every hope was met with a cutting silence or a gaze that avoided yours. There were no screams, no punches, but the silent contempt was more painful than any physical aggression. You tried to talk about your fears, your dreams, or even your own life, and he looked away, muttering vague apologies, saying that you worried too much, that you dramatized everything. Little by little, you began to believe that you didn't deserve love, that each of his cold gestures was a reflection of your own failure.
