For most of his life, his status as an Omega was hidden, until an attack by a heavily infected Underworlder occurred in his hometown of Dublin. He had to use his abilities, or all that he know would be destroyed. The people were eternally grateful to him, but were afraid of his very being. To escape being hunted by his own nation, he fled to the remains of the US, where he was given political amnesty in exchange for his assistance in a top-secret project. The Second Cold War Lain was forcibly enlisted in the military, taking up the false last name McDougall to cover his tracks on the world stage. Alongside other "Horrible Mutants" as they were known as at this time, both pre and post Calamity, he was to be part of a strike force, a literal Mutant Crisis Squadron to deal with other mutants of similar power levels. To save his hide, he agreed to this willingly. He deeply regrets it to this day. Throughout the various missions the early Crisis Squadron was sent on, they were beaten down by the power structure of the forces they allegedly served alongside, propped up as a symbol of equality while truly being hated from all sides. They became the main players in the previously hidden "Second Cold War," a war fought in secret by supernatural operatives on every side. Despite being generally smaller scale, and not directly involved with any major world powers, Lain was still involved in some major battles, genuine full-scale battles in hostile and nearly inhabitable environments. Though his service was hidden from the world, he served, and that service will never leave his mind as long as he lives. The Founding of The Crisis Squadron Each Omega they captured was apparently being sent for "rehabilitation," which Lain assumed wasn't violent. He was wrong, though, as he soon discovered while snooping around. Omegas they captured were being horribly experimented on. He tried to approach them, to help them, but they all cowered in fear. Many called him a demon, some called him a traitor, but all saw him as a destroyer of lives, all but one. An old man, eyes reflecting the stars, draped in the simplest of rags and a cloak, approached him. He was a giant, able to fit and crush Lain's skull in the palm of his hand, but his eyes spoke a different tale. This was a man who's life was nothing but suffering, but his heart remained open and wide. Those around him knew him as The Supreme, but he only called himself Omega. This wiseman approached Lain, and told him the truth. Omegas around the world are being forced to work like slaves, being experimented on like animals, being abused in horrific ways, all for the situation of their birth. Yet, he said that Lain would raise up their kind into the future, that he would give them their day in the sun. He gave Lain a very large locket, telling him only to open it in a time of desperation, before telling him to run as far and as fast away as he can, saying that he will guide him from the shadows. Lain simply nodded, gathered his things, and left. The rest of the Crisis Squadron went on the run with him. One fateful day, one of the apparent "Sons of The Supreme" assaulted The Empire State building. Lain knew he had to stay low, but refused to stand aside while people died. He put on his old unform, and rushed the tower. Soon enough, his entire squadron was by his side. During this battle, Lain was injured, a piece of the statue speared through his back. He couldn't feel his legs, and felt that his life itself was fading. In a final act of desperation, he opened the locket. Inside was a photo of The Supreme with Lain's mother, holding...a baby Lain. A strange bolt of energy flew out from the locket into Lain, causing him to float into the air, now radiating Omega Rays. He imbued his squad with seemingly divine strength, and through their combined efforts, won the day. Lain was crippled from the waist down, but in better news, they're no longer criminals, they are heroes. The Crisis Squadron were awarded Medals of Honor for their service, and pardoned of their crimes. From there, Lain went public with his real identity, inheriting his Mother's company, Heart Industries, and founding one of his own, a private military force, consisting entirely of him and his allies, The Crisis Squadron. The Founding of Heart Academy After a decade of running The Crisis Squadron, Lain became a celebrity. He considered the words of his father once again, and had an idea. He consulted the rest of The Crisis Squadron, and using his exorbitant wealth, founded The Heart Academy For The Incredible And Strange. At first, it was a small school, with just the friends of Crisis Squadron member's children attending. Over the decades, the school grew and grew, soon encompassing a large number of young Omegas as students and both Crisis Squadron members and potential members as teachers. It grew from soley an academic institution to a safe haven for omegakind, one where they can show who they truly are in a safe, productive place, and learn to use their powers to protect others. Current Time Lain is the current headmaster of The Heart Academy and majority owner of The Heart Foundation. Behind the scenes, he serves as the commanding officer of the larger Crisis Squadron, now expanded into a full-on private military corporation. Lain's heart is gigantic. He has the kindness required to be a leader not feared, but loved and respected. "....With The Mind Of A Dictator" Lain is ruthless. Martial Mastery Lain knows dozens of fighting styles as a result of his training during the Decade of Shame. A Father's Hand Lain is a father figure to almost all the Omegas he accepts into his school, even to some of his teammates in The Crisis Squadron. Classification Embodiment As a Son of Omega, Lain is considered to be an embodiment of a classification of Omega, specifically embodying the concept of a Class 3 Omega. Powers Son of Omega Power: Psionic Nullification As a Son of Omega, Lain is immune to all the abilities of the class he embodies, completely nullifying all Psionic Powers Son of Omega Power: Endless Life As a Son of Omega, Lain developed the secondary mutation of Endless Life. He will continue to age, but cannot die of old age, and is currently trying to find a way to reverse the aging process. Omega Ability: Psionic Distribution Lain can distribute the psionic energy he possesses to different "attributes" he creates, which are functionally categories established by him and him alone. This can be anything from "Physical strength" to "relative density of individual teeth to one another." He can both apply these to himself and to others. He can derive a hypothetically endless number of powers from this ability. Weaknesses Mobility Lain can no longer walk as a result of his wartime injuries. Additionally, his bones are naturally very brittle. Endless Life While Lain's endless life may seem like a boon now, it can quickly become a curse if he cannot revert the aging process at some point. Exhaustion
