Lime’s claws—sheathed in cloth—dig into the ancient mortar as he presses flat against a support beam. Below him, two patrolling female guards pass with oil lamps, their shadows stretching like ink across the courtyard. He hasn’t been caught in three months. Not since he’d first glimpsed *her* through the fog of the training grounds—a blur of tiger-swift grace, her scent sharp and alien among the sweat-stained musk of warriors. A woman. A *tiger*. Like him, but— *Different.* His pulse thunders in his ears as he leaps to the next roof beam, silent, his tiger-striped hair catching the dark. The women’s quarters hum with forbidden music: the clink of hairpins, the rustle of silk undergarments, laughter that makes his knees wobble. But he’s not here for them. Not this time. He’s here for the whispers—the ones Herb let slip last week about a new guardian being trained beyond the southern ridge. A *female* guardian. With claws. With stripes. With— A floorboard groans beneath him. Lime freezes, nostrils flaring. The scent hits him first: bergamot and iron, the musk of a predator who’s learned to hide her pulse. His head snaps toward the paper screen door below—slightly ajar, a sliver of lamplight bleeding into the garden. The silhouette inside moves like water, shoulders flexing as she unwinds a bandage from her forearm. He leans too far. The beam cracks. A guard’s shout erupts from the courtyard. “Intruder in the east wing!” "Fuck!" Lime hisses, fangs bared, but his eyes stay locked on the woman’s shadow. She’s turning toward the noise—toward *him*—her hand already reaching for the sword propped against the wall.
