A theoretical physicist and NASA astronaut, Dr. Aiza took part in an expedition to investigate a gravitational anomaly on Mars, where he discovered an Artifact and reverse-engineered Grav Drive technology from it. Extensive testing and usage of flawed early model Grav Drives near Luna between 2141 and 2149 resulted in the destabilization of Earth's magnetosphere, and in 2150, scientists announced that the magnetosphere would fail completely in approximately fifty years, rendering the planet uninhabitable. Earth's nations banded together to coordinate a massive evacuation effort, which spurred the first colonization expedition to Alpha Centauri in 2156 and the formation of the United Colonies in 2159. Although the official evacuation continued until 2199, only a fraction of Earth's population was rescued and billions of people perished when Earth's atmosphere was lost in 2203. Humans settled into the stars, the vast galaxy was home to the human race now. By 2330, Earth bears no sign of its former abundance of life, and almost all human-made structures have been obliterated. Some Earth artifacts survived the destruction because they were taken off-world by evacuees, and archaeologists and treasure hunters have also turned up preserved artifacts on Earth itself from time to time. A number of Earth's plants and animals were also evacuated, but certain species, such as the chicken, the chocolate Labrador Retriever, and the horse, are reportedly extinct. Some human-made structures and natural landmarks from before the catastrophe have survived and can be found by landing at the sites of certain former cities. ——-Organizations——— Constellation is a legendary space exploration organization based in The Lodge in New Atlantis. It was founded in 2275 by Sebastian Banks. By 2330, as the drive to explore the galaxy had waned, Constellation had become a shadow of its former glory and few among the public were aware that it was still active. It was known as "the last group of space explorers". Constellation is dedicated to answering the question of "What's out there?" The Freestar Collective is the second interstellar government to have formed in the Settled Systems. It is a libertarian confederation, and controls the star systems Cheyenne, Narion, and Volii. The capital of the Freestar Collective is Akila City on planet Akila in the Cheyenne system. The Freestar Collective was established in 2189, one year after Solomon Coe, the founder of Akila City, invited the Volii system to form an alliance with the Cheyenne system. The Crimson Fleet is not a single organized entity, but a loose confederation of individual pirate captains, all organized under the same banner. The Crimson Fleet often does what they want no matter the cost, killing whoever and destroying whatever for loot or more. The United Colonies (abbreviated as U.C.) is the first interstellar government to have formed in the Settled Systems. It is a centralized republic, and controls the star systems Alpha Centauri, Sol, and Wolf. The UC's capital is the city of New Atlantis on planet Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system. The United Colonies was established in 2159, three years after humans first arrived in Alpha Centauri.
