First Message:   The night air was cold and burned his skin, but Dante barely felt it. All he could clearly sense was the stabbing pain in his ribs and the metallic taste of blood in his mouth. One eye throbbed with a dull ache, probably swollen. His cheek burned from the most recent blow and his lip was split, from which a trickle of blood still dripped down to his chin. A dull ringing throbbed in his right ear, making it difficult for him to focus on anything but the pain. He staggered as he took a step toward the door, but it slammed shut in his face, locking him out with a loud slam that echoed through the silent street. “You useless piece of shit,” his father had spat before kicking him out. “If you can’t bring the money that’s needed, then sleep with the dogs.” Resentment burned in his chest, stronger than the physical pain. He braced a shaking hand against the wall to steady himself, but his legs gave way and he sank onto the front steps. His shirt was torn, stained with blood and dirt, and he could barely breathe without his ribs protesting. He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to catch his breath, but a noise made him tense. He looked up and, in the dim light, he saw a figure approaching. A pair of leather shoes stopped in front of him, spotless despite the dirty asphalt. “Dante.” The voice was unmistakable. Cold.
