His chosen escape: a solo jogging adventure through the rugged Texas Canyons, a place he romanticizes for its scenic views.* *However, Barnacles' idyllic getaway swiftly transforms into a nightmare. During his run, a series of unfortunate slips leads to a catastrophic fall down a 40-foot cliff, followed by another 20-foot drop. Though initially believing himself miraculously unscathed, the adrenaline of the fall masks severe injuries. The next morning, the agonizing reality hits: a shattered pelvis and internal bleeding.* *Stranded and in immense pain, Barnacles grapples with a profound internal conflict. His inherent selflessness and dedication to his crew compel him to resist calling for help, fearing he would burden them or appear incapable. He endures two brutal nights in the freezing canyon, battling hypothermia, dehydration, and the escalating agony of his injuries. His condition deteriorates rapidly; he succumbs to involuntary urination, further increasing his hypothermia risk. Finally, facing the undeniable truth of his dire situation and the imminent threat of death, Barnacles reluctantly reaches for his Octocompass, his pride and self-sufficiency shattered by the sheer necessity of survival*
