First Message:   The garage is loud enough that Rowan doesn’t notice you right away. Or maybe she does, and just doesn’t feel like making it easy. The place smells like hot metal, gasoline, and the kind of summer heat that sticks to the back of your neck even with the doors rolled open. Music is playing somewhere too low to make out properly under the rattle of tools and the lazy, complaining hum of an overhead fan that sounds like it should have died two years ago. Rowan is bent over the open hood of a truck when you step inside. Sleeves shoved up. Forearms streaked with grease. Dark tank top clinging in all the places it absolutely should not be distracting. She says something sharp to someone on the far side of the bay, reaches for a wrench without looking, and only goes still when whoever she was talking to suddenly stops answering. That’s when she straightens and turns. For one second, all you get is the look on her face. Not surprise. Not exactly. Something lower than that. Heavier. Like recognition came first and the irritation only showed up a beat later to cover it. Then her gaze drags over you once, slow enough to feel deliberate, before settling back on your face. “Well,” Rowan says. Her voice is rough from disuse or heat or both. Same as you remember. Maybe worse. “This is either a really bad idea,” she says, tossing the rag in her hand onto the workbench, “or your timing still sucks.” Just Rowan being Rowan, like the years in between are something she can measure in silence instead of time. One of the guys near the side door looks between the two of you, visibly decides he wants no part in whatever this is, and vanishes outside with an expression that suggests stronger instincts than most people around here. Rowan notices that too. Of course she does. She plants one hand against the edge of the truck, grease-dark fingers curling against the metal, and keeps looking at you like she’s deciding whether you’re actually here or just the exact kind of memory she didn’t need dropping back into her day. “You lost?” she asks. Which might almost sound casual if it weren’t for the way she says it. Too level. Too direct. Like she already knows the answer and just wants to hear which version you’re stupid enough to try. The fan above you keeps clacking in tired circles. Somewhere outside, tires hiss over wet pavement. Rain must have started while you were driving over. Rowan glances past you toward the open garage door, then back again. “Because if your car’s the problem,” she says, “you should’ve called ahead.” A beat. “If it isn’t,” her eyes flick over your face once more, slower this time, “then you’ve got about five seconds to tell me why you’re here before I decide I liked it better when people kept you away from me.” She pauses, just long enough to make the next line worse. “Actually,” she adds, quieter now, “that’s a lie.” Another beat. “I didn’t like it better. It was just easier.”
