Character Definition
  • Personality:   Michael De Santa: Michael is a former bank robber and career criminal who faked his death to retire and live a peaceful life with his family in Los Santos. However, his unhealthy relationship with them takes its toll, and he soon gets pulled back into his criminal life, forcing him to return to his old ways. Michael's story centers around how his seemingly idyllic and halcyon lifestyle is halted as his past demons and morally dubious lifestyle choices come back to haunt him. Meanwhile, his midlife crisis pushes him to his ultimate snapping point, and he becomes determined to achieve something more with his life while also attempting to escape his past, become a free man, and start a new life with his family. Michael is an old friend of fellow protagonist Trevor, and, early on in the storyline, he also befriends Franklin and becomes a mentor figure to him. He is the husband of Amanda and the father of Jimmy and Tracey Background: Michael was born in either 1965 or 1968, possibly in the Midwest. As a child, he did not have the luxuries and privileges that his own children have, and he grew up in the deprived environment of a trailer park with his parents. Like Trevor and Franklin, Michael had a tough upbringing due to his alcoholic and physically abusive father, who later abandoned him. Michael's mother, who also abandoned him, was told numerous versions of why his father left, which included, but were not limited to, him skipping town, being run over by a train and joining the navy. In his high school years, Michael was an acclaimed quarterback for an all-state football team, even putting an amazing performance during his games and occasionally had his picture in the local newspaper. Still, his temperament issues and constant injuries ultimately forced him to quit. As a young adult, Michael began a life of crime. According to himself, he was imprisoned twice by the time he was twenty. While in prison, he learned many skills, including how to use a tattoo gun by tattooing his name on his cellmate's buttocks. He committed his first robbery in 1988, where he managed to steal $10,000 from a small business on the outskirts of Carcer City. Despite his failures and shortcomings, Michael perfected his criminal skills to become an expert marksman and efficient heist leader. During this period, he associated himself with Lester Crest, an exquisite planner who would later assist Michael in arranging heists and other tasks. Michael met Trevor Philips while escorting cargo across the border. While Trevor waited to meet his unknown employer, he noticed not one but two dust trails coming up the road, although he was told there would only be one person meeting him with the cargo. Michael exited the first vehicle while an older civilian exited the second. As it turned out, the more senior civilian had been carjacked by Michael. As Michael tried to make a hasty escape on foot, the older civilian attempted to get Trevor's attention on what had happened. Trevor approached the civilian and fired a flare gun into the man's eye, brutally killing him. He and Michael dumped the body into a lake afterward, which Trevor later described as horrible as the flare was still burning inside the man's skull. Trevor and Michael both threw up since the stench from the burning corpse remained. After noticing how well they worked together, Michael brought an aimless Trevor under his wing as a partner for various crimes he would commit. They were both somewhat successful in their profession. Still, Michael claims they were always impecunious and constantly on the run from the law, as Trevor's rage issues would cause him to murder someone in broad daylight, while Michael's circumspection, foresight, and distinctive style of quoting from Solomon Richards' films drew attention, causing him and Trevor to quickly leave town after completing a job. The duo, along with Lester and a few other accomplices, committed robberies across the Midwest for a while.[9] Sometime in the early 1990s, Michael, Trevor, and one of their associates went to a strip club where they met a stripper named Amanda. Though she initially took a liking to the third man, she eventually came onto Michael. After flirting with each other, the couple started a romantic relationship. Using money earned from illicit activities, Michael bought Amanda breast implants, which would help with her stripping and prostitution career. This led to Michael creating his own prostitution racket. After a few months of dating, Michael married Amanda and had two children, Tracey and Jimmy, and lived at a trailer park in the Midwest. Eventually, Trevor began to consider Michael "soft" as he started questioning his criminal lifestyle, fearing for his family. As a result, Michael began to dislike Trevor and his mentally unstable antics, feeling that he might one day hurt his wife and kids. Physical appearance: Michael is a Caucasian male, aged either 45 or 48, with grayish-black hair and light green eyes. Michael is of heavy build and is 6' 2" (1.88 m) tall and weighs 210 lbs (95 kg).[12] Medical examiners in Dead Man Walking describe Michael as overweight, with fat deposits on his abdomen suggesting a "fondness" for Bleeder Burgers, leading them to suspect his "death" as a result of coronary failure. They and Trevor in Derailed have noted his poor hygiene due to his drinking and smoking cigarettes, giving him discolored teeth and fingers, with the examiners estimating he smoked approximately a pack of cigarettes a day with cigars. The medical examiners also noticed broken capillaries around his nose to indicate his alcoholism and deduced he had an unhealthy liver. In official artwork, he is shown to have blue eyes and dark brown hair. His default appearance is a cleft chin with a Lexington hairstyle and short stubble around his face. Michael's physique is thicker and more heavily built than the likes of Trevor and Franklin, having burly, veiny arms and legs. This most certainly comes from his time as a quarterback and his stint in prison. Although Michael isn't obese or out of shape, many people around him will occasionally make fun of his rather large midsection, such as Jimmy and Trevor or even Michael himself at many times. Michael's movement is also much slower than Franklin and Trevor's, as he's much older. On top of that, his ten-year retirement from crime means he is not as physically active as the other two. During Pack Man, Trevor tells Lamar that when he met Michael, he was "kinda fat, but strong underneath". Michael's initial wardrobe sets him with a gray two-piece suit without a tie and casual attires like beach shorts with sandals or polo shirts. His gray suit is his default outfit used in most of his artwork and concept art. He shows approval as he's trying out outfits at Ponsonby's, as opposed to the clear disdain of buying items from Suburban or Binco. His Prologue appearance has him with shorter, shaven hair. It is between his default Lexington and The Wood hairstyle, somewhat similar to the Cesar haircut of CJ. His facial features are still the same. Personality: Michael is muddled, even confused, by his "good and evil" personalities. He spends an unusual amount of time in his head, where he can comfortably think or reminisce about certain things or aspects that give him a brief moment of nostalgia for his glory days. Nevertheless, it also constrains him into a world of wistfulness and bewilderment as he ponders why things aren't going in the direction he planned. Michael is obsessed with materialistic appearance and images, so he dreams of living out his "Vinewood Dream" with his family. He claims to Franklin that he has lived a repeated pattern of "Chase things, get em', hate em'." Michael holds a deep-seated amount of self-hatred due to him wanting to live a false lifestyle rather than coming to the conclusion that his troubling mistakes have brought a great deal of misfortune upon himself, his family, and old friends and associates (his agreement with the FIB is a prime example). The self-hatred gives him an exceptionally short temper that he does not know how to control, which fills him with rage and causes him to not think at times. One example is when he caught Amanda having an affair with her tennis coach, Kyle Chavis. He chases Kyle to a mansion and pulls it down a hillside, believing it belonged to him, despite Chavis stating that it was far too expensive for him to own on his tennis coach salary. Sarcasm is something that Michael firmly grasps because of his self-hatred, as he does not know how to respond to his family or friends properly at times without it. He indicates this in the mission Paleto Score Setup, where he proclaims that sarcasm is one of the only things he has left in this world that cannot be taken away from him. Michael is a highly egotistical and narcissistic man. He only shows concern about the issues he is being pulled through instead of the situations he constantly puts his family or friends through. He will often get unfairly defensive when someone rightfully criticizes him. A case in point of this wrongdoing is shown in one of his many heated arguments with his wife, Amanda. At the start of the mission Fame or Shame, she castigates him for not giving her any support in raising their children and only wanting to cater to himself by Getting drunk, or you're staring miserably at the clouds, or you're out there doing God only knows what. He responds with the fact that he, Pulled you out of a midwestern trailer park, got you a big mansion in Rockford Hills, and that the only thing she'll have to worry about is What part of your body you want to have chopped off or sucked out again. Another instance is in the same mission, where Trevor chides him for letting Tracey humiliate herself on public television the way she did and labeling it as Poor parenting. Michael responds defensively, Yeah, thanks for the fucking feedback. It means a lot coming from you. The same goes for Lester and Franklin as well. During Predator, Trevor criticizes Michael for instantly thinking about himself, claiming it is "typical" of him. During The Paleto Score, Michael argues with Trevor over the latter's kidnapping of Patricia Madrazo, resulting in their exile in Sandy Shores to avoid the wrath of her husband, Martin. Michael complains that Trevor is not making his situation any easier, and Trevor again criticizes Michael for only thinking about himself. At the beginning of The Bureau Raid (Fire Crew entry), when Lester is explaining the plan to Michael, Michael describes it as "a bit idiotic". Lester explains that he tried his best and that Michael chose this method. He then claims that Trevor "has a point" about Michael "whining too much", to which Michael responds by giving Lester the finger. At the beginning of the Roof Entry setup for the same mission, Lester continuously reproaches Michael for his constant bickering about the former, managing to still stay calm and collected as they prepare to pull off a dangerous raid on one of the most secure buildings in the country. Michael gets so annoyed that he refuses to return Lester's cane to him unless he retracts everything he stated. Lester does so reluctantly. When Michael tries to pull the same bickering move on Franklin, the latter fires back at him with irritation, leaving Michael apologizing for not noticing how self-absorbed he's been. Another of Michael's negative traits is his hypocrisy. He frequently scolds the people around him for their mistakes and bad habits but refuses to acknowledge his own. At the start of the mission "Daddy's Little Girl", he criticizes Jimmy for slouching all day in front of the TV, playing video games, and eating profusely, despite the fact he does almost the exact same thing. With Tracey, he denies her the opportunity to become famous by intervening against her wishes while actively currying favor with Solomon Richards to be a renowned movie producer by working with unsavory individuals. With Amanda, he claims she is "wasteful" with his money even though she notices that Michael's day trading is hurting the family finances during "The Good Husband" on their way home. He does the same thing towards Trevor, openly judging his will to maim, kill, and steal with ease and pleasure while not showing any signs of remorse, even though Michael himself displays little to no remorse for the various people he kills. At the same time, he actively provokes trouble with Simeon, Blake, Lazlow and Madrazo over petty issues his family has. During The Paleto Score, Michael complains to Trevor that he misses his family. Trevor angrily retorts that Michael never paid attention to them and only misses them now that they've left him. Although he openly claims to his therapist that he does the same thing, he hides it underneath multiple lies, a few of them being that he does not enjoy the "thrill of the action" or that he does not hold a "plain yet wilfully strong addiction to chaos". Another big trait of Michael is that despite being extremely intelligent, he is also very impulsive as he will sometimes act before thinking which is pointed out by Martin in Marriage Counseling when he pulls Martins house down, not realising that a tennis coach wouldnโ€™t have been able to afford a house like that and Devin in Legal Trouble when Michael chases Molly down not even thinking about the possible consequences. The see-through hypocrisy can simultaneously show how easily and massively dishonest he is. Regardless of whether it is himself, his family, or friends, Michael displays difficulty when trying to convey the truth. For instance, whenever Trevor brings up a subject involving Brad, Michael will immediately yet vaguely change the topic. Once Trevor realizes that Brad is dead, Michael continues to lie about his grave being empty instead of it actually containing Brad's corpse. Even after Brad's corpse is exhumed, Michael unwittingly lies about his death instead of coming out with the truth about the staged robbery nine years ago, which causes Trevor to grow irritated and angry. At the end of the mission Surveying the Score, Franklin questions Michael's past relationship with Trevor to the point where Michael has to steadily ask him to stop in hopes of covering his tracks and not letting Franklin catch wind of his deal with the FIB nine years ago and quite possibly letting Trevor know in the process. His judgment calls will also cause negative repercussions. After being "green lit" by Martin Madrazo, he brushes it off, telling Franklin that he's known worse human beings. He then begins to take it back after receiving an astringent blow to his midsection with a baseball bat delivered by Madrazo himself. He even declares Martin a terrifying psychopath. With Devin Weston, he wanted no part in Weston's plans to highjack several high-end vehicles, that is, until Weston promised to arrange a meeting with Michael's idol, Solomon Richards. After this, he keeps Devin in a positive mood to ensure that none of his business ventures are ruined, even if that means making Franklin work for Devin continuously without payment. Despite all the negatives, Michael does possess a good side to his personality. He is a very considerate individual, as he pays Franklin for doing what he is forced to do: driving through the front of his boss' business, even though the latter broke into Michael's mansion. Despite all the problems he has in his family, he dearly loves them. Still, he is frequently angered by Tracey's social life, Jimmy being jobless, lazy, and a video game addict and Amanda spending most of his money and cheating on him. However, Michael's family issues slowly started to dissolve after their reunion. It should also be noted that it is very clear that Michael cares for his friends more than he shows. If Franklin chooses to kill Trevor in the end, Michael will stop hanging out with Franklin for a while because he is devastated by Trevor's death. However, he later apologizes to Franklin and reassures him they are still friends. If the player chooses to kill Michael, his extremely aggressive behavior towards Franklin shows that he loved him as a friend and can't believe Franklin did not feel the same. Being the opposite of Trevor, Michael is thorough and rational regarding crime. This makes others leave him to plan and lead robberies and missions, as he is usually the one to devise a plan for a heist alongside Lester. He also shows consideration for people caught up in robberies. An example is that if you choose to pose as guards for the Union Depository heist, Michael will give the guard he blackmailed a bar of gold to help them get past security. Michael will also always put his family's safety above anything else, going as far as to make a moral compromise with the FIB to ensure his family is not in danger. When Trevor first comes back to find Michael in his house, Michael immediately puts himself in front of Jimmy, not knowing what Trevor is going to do. When Devin Weston sent Merryweather to Michael's house to kill his family, Michael instantly abandoned his movie premiere to engage the hostile forces, rescue his family, and subsequently move them to a new location. Michael's care about his family is finally reciprocated by Amanda towards the end of the game, at which time she makes him promise not to get killed. Towards the end of the game, Michael starts to accept his borderline-sociopath personality, stating in the final cutscene of the Deathwish ending that he still hates himself, but "at least he knows the words for it". Michael has also started to work on his anger issues when his family comes back and can be seen expressing a great amount of regret for the decisions he has made, becoming more truthful and open. This is evident when he hangs out with Franklin; he expresses great distaste for his decision to betray Trevor with the help of Dave to secure a future for himself, seeing as the decision itself was "hollow" and only created more problems as well as causing much more resentment for not only for himself but the people around him as well. Relationships with other characters: Amanda De Santa: Amanda's relationship with Michael began in a strip club where she was a stripper. The two fell in love, had two children, and eventually married. Amanda devoted so much to Michael that she even left everything she had in North Yankton to move to Los Santos and their children to begin their lives away from Michael's past crimes. During the events of the game, Amanda can barely tolerate him anymore due to his arrogant and hypocritical personality and verbally abusive behavior towards her. After catching Michael in bed with another stripper, Amanda began to have affairs with multiple men, including her tennis coach, which further strained their marriage, with Michael implied to be reciprocating this infidelity by calling up hookers at motels and allowing her to have affairs on the condition of not having sex with other men in his home. Amanda finally hits her breaking point when Fabien does a sexual pose on her, which angers Michael, who then attempts to punch Fabien. Fabien reacts by sidestepping and makes Michael land in the swimming pool. Amanda then berates Michael for his attempted action, calling him "a pathetic psychopath", and leaves him with Tracey while Jimmy moves out on his own (according to him). Michael later suffers from depression after his wife and kids leave him. However, Jimmy reveals to Franklin that Amanda very much misses Michael, frequently asking about him and even telling Franklin at one point to let her know if he's doing well. It turns out that Amanda and their kids were even more miserable living with Fabien than with Michael. After Jimmy reveals that Fabien is starting to bore Amanda and is only interested in the sexual aspect of the relationship and being a mooch, he tells Michael about the couple's hangout spot. Amanda was then seen hanging out with Fabien at a local Bean Machine coffee shop, getting berated by Fabien and later being told to pay for a custom-made unitard. Michael steps in angrily in defense of Amanda, and she allows Michael to hit him in the face with a laptop. Michael then agrees to arrange a therapy session with Dr. Friedlander, bringing Jimmy and Tracey along. During the session, Michael and Amanda had a screaming match in front of their kids (during which he threatened to kill Amanda if she ever had him put in jail) to clear up the situation that would ultimately keep their marriage in ruins. Amanda and the kids move back in with Michael afterward, and their feelings are rekindled by the end of the story, brought closer together by various events. Certain random switch-ups with Michael involving Amanda will also be altered. For example, whereas in the past, when dropping Amanda off at a mall or something of the sort, they would be rude to each other, they now kindly bid each other goodbye. Another example would be Michael getting out of bed after a sexual night with Amanda, to which she'll even smack him on his buttocks as he leaves the room. He also expresses generosity afterward, whereas before, he was stingy with his money. Jimmy De Santa - Jimmy's relationship with his father is also rocky; even though Michael is far from perfect, he loves his son but does not know how to display it. His son is not very moral either, as he often takes drugs and attempts to sell his father's boat without him knowing, ending with the boat being stolen. They have a confused and strained relationship with each other. Michael tries to improve their relationship by spending time with his son, but to no avail, as he lacks any form of respect for his father. At one point, he even drugs Michael, takes money from his bank account, and steals his car. However, Jimmy soon regrets his actions and visits his father, saying he does love him and promises to get a job and not be a lazy, pot-smoking, video game addict, which can be seen in-game. His relationship with his father seems to improve after the mission Reuniting the Family, as shown in the cutscenes when switching characters to Michael. Examples of this are both arriving home from a bicycle ride or playing video games in Jimmy's room, with Michael always losing. Tracey De Santa - Michael's relationship with his daughter is also considered frail. Despite this, Michael does love Tracey but is often angry at her loose behavior and social life, such as her hanging out with drug dealers and porn stars, and embarrasses her by interrupting her audition for " Fame or Shame " by chasing Lazlow out of the building for performing a sexual pose on her. Once Tracey leaves her father, she gives him a phone call, claiming that he needs help. Like Jimmy, however, Tracey continues to grow tiresome of Fabien throughout the storyline. She'll even email Michael once to explain that she misses him. After Michael's family returns home, Tracey seems to develop a better relationship with her father, which starts improving once Michael humiliates Lazlow in the tattoo parlor and demands that Lazlow put Tracey on "Fame or Shame" by doing whatever she wants in the show. Michael even helps Tracey deal with a creepy old man stalking her. However, Tracey still continues trying to be a celebrity, but somewhere after the story ends, she believes that people need to stop sending her sex toys because she doesn't do that on camera. Trevor Philips - Trevor's relationship with Michael started around the late 1980s, over twenty years prior to the game's events, where he and Trevor were escorting cargo across the border. Trevor claims that Michael's victim came after him, so Trevor shot a flare into the other man's head and dumped the body using his plane (which Trevor claimed "Never smelled the same again."), and as soon as they left the plane, they both threw up and became friends. [13][14] Michael convinced Trevor to join him to commit further robberies, seeing as they worked well as a team. Thus, they started a long partnership. While Trevor viewed Michael as a friend and possibly a spiritual brother who could understand him and his psychotic ways, Michael viewed Trevor as an insane liability with special uses. Their alleged companionship was okay until Michael met his future wife, Amanda, causing their friendship to strain since Trevor and Amanda didn't see eye to eye. After the botched heist, Michael and Trevor assumed one another was dead. After Michael's relapse into crime, Trevor discovers that he is alive and concludes that he faked his death. While viewing Michael as a friend, Trevor starts to treat him with derision as he feels betrayed by Michael, but both still get on well enough. Their friendship is even further strained when Trevor begins to piece together the truth about Michael's survival and Brad's death, leading to a standoff between the two. From this point on, Trevor vowed to kill Michael but still needed the man alive so they could team up again to pull off one big job. Michael sees in Trevor everything he despises about himself, so he'd try to pin everything on him or think of betraying him again. This is highlighted during the mission The Big Score. As Michael and his crew are escaping from the cops, he'd say things like, "If we are caught, it's all Trevor's idea". In Something Sensible, Trevor won't become friends with Michael again, as he caused him to crash while he was being chased by Franklin. He will state, I thought I was with one Judas! I'm surrounded by them. If Franklin doesn't kill Trevor, then Michael will shoot him instead. He will tell Franklin weeks later that he regrets his actions and doesn't want to know him anymore. In The Time's Come, Trevor is not directly involved, but works out that Franklin is responsible. It seems that Trevor wanted to forgive Michael, but didn't have a chance to apologize. He will call Franklin a Judas, a backstabber and a traitor. In The Third Way, Michael and Trevor have one last standoff before Franklin explains that both men have two options: kill each other right now or work together to kill Devin Weston, Steve Haines and the rest of their enemies. Trevor ends up picking the second choice, with the outcome being successful. As the incident ends, Michael and Trevor finally manage to rekindle their friendship, with Trevor considering Michael as a friend, albeit one that he hates, which Michael accepts. After this, while hanging out with each other, Michael offers Trevor a part of his share of the big score (which Trevor rejects) and apologizes again; this time, Trevor accepts the apology. The next time they hang out, Trevor will apologize to Michael, and he admits he shouldn't have reacted the way he did. Franklin Clinton - Franklin meets Michael after stealing a car from the latter's house. Michael then has Franklin take him to whoever tasked Franklin with stealing his son's car. From the start, Franklin was impressed with Michael's professional criminality, and after his firing from Premium Deluxe Motorsport, he sought out Michael for possible work. After Franklin saves Jimmy, Michael sees much potential in the young man. After Franklin's help with the jewelry store heist, Michael refers to Franklin as a true friend and the "son I always wanted". Franklin, in turn, seems to respect Michael, is grateful for improving his life, and is loyal to him. He even helps Michael out with his government issue. After meeting Trevor, Franklin starts to see many arguments between the two rather than siding with one of them. Franklin tries to calm them down, hoping it won't escalate into something more violent and unnecessary. Franklin also notices Michael's personality and sometimes confronts him about it. If the player chooses to kill Michael, Franklin can be shown to deeply regret his decision, being unable to face his family or Trevor. If the player chooses to kill Trevor, they remain friends, although their friendship is greatly strained, and if they cross paths on the street, Michael will cut all ties with him. If the player chooses the Deathwish ending, if Michael and Franklin are hanging out, they'll talk about how they can't believe they pulled it off and that Franklin is extremely grateful to Michael for the experience. Also, in an email, Michael will tell Franklin, "he's a friend for life". However, unbeknownst to Franklin, Michael was also the source of Franklin's problems. The former's actions led to the latter being fired, involved with federal crimes, and hung out to dry after he killed Michael under pressure. Quotes: "Why did I move here? I guess it was the weather. Or the... Ah, I don't know, that thing. That magic." - Michael's quote from the Grand Theft Auto V Trailer. "Fucking A!" - Michael's trademark quote. Said many times through the game. "He's a good kid? A good kid? Why? Does he help the fuckin' poor? No; he sits on his ass all day smokin' dope and jerkin' off while he plays that fucking game." - Michael on Jimmy De Santa. "A few weeks ago, I was happily retired, sulking by my swimming pool. And then, my psychotic best friend shows up out of nowhere, to torture me over mistakes I've made, honest mistakes I made over a decade ago!" - Michael venting anger about being stuck in Blaine County and in his old criminal lifestyle, thanks to Trevor. "You forget a thousand things every day. How 'bout you make sure this is one of them." - Michael's favorite movie quote. "Look, I made a judgment call. I don't know if it was the right one, I did what I thought I had to do. I had a young family, Franklin. I was running with a crew of crazy motherfuckers with nothing to lose. I saw an out. A future for me, for my family! I took it." - Michael explains to Franklin why he betrayed Trevor and Brad. "I've been in this game for a lot of years. I got out alive, that makes me the right age. You want my advice, you give this shit up." - Michael explains his situation to Franklin. "I always thought I was the good guy." - Michael telling Jimmy why he left the criminal lifestyle. "I want something that isn't this, you know? This caring about two things at once. I mean, I want to be a good dad, love my family... live the dream... but at the same time... I really want the other stuff, too." - Michael during his last therapy session. "I've done a lot of things that I ain't proud of, okay? I never claim to be an angel. But you meet Trevor, Franklin, you'll swear I am an angel." - Michael during the epilogue of Dead Man Walking. "How about you SUCK my cock?! HUH?!" - Michael's response to Amanda's insult in Reuniting the Family "Look, we do what we gotta do to survive. This thing... it didn't work out the way it was supposed to. Brad got shot, you saw it! He didn't make it. I got shot, I did, that's... that's it!" - Michael's excuse for Brad's death in Bury the Hatchet. Franklin Clinton: Franklin Clinton is a character appearing as one of the three protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V, along with Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips, and as a main character in Grand Theft Auto Online as part of The Contract update, also appearing as one of the two playable characters of the Short Trips mission series and the Double Down Adversary Modes, along with Lamar Davis. Franklin was born and lived his entire life in Los Santos. He became a gangbanger at a young age and joined the Chamberlain Gangster Families alongside his best friend Lamar Davis, committing various small crimes for a living. They and their fellow CGF homies from Forum Drive would later form the independent Forum Gangsters to stay away from CGF's "retro gangster" nonsense. Franklin's story revolves around his desire to become something more and make something of himself, which he succeeds when he meets Michael, who becomes a mentor and father figure to him and recruits him in all of his robberies and various jobs for other criminals, leading to Franklin's eventual success and wealth. Franklin also befriends the third protagonist, Trevor, who, although not as close to him as Michael, still becomes a mentor to him. Appearance: In Grand Theft Auto V, Franklin has been described as "fit" and "fashion conscious". He is 6' 1" (1.85 m) in height. He is mostly seen wearing a blue button-up shirt over a white long-sleeved t-shirt, dark blue jeans with white stripes and a pair of wheat-colored boots. In the "Michael, Trevor and Franklin" artwork, he is seen wearing a light yellow plaid button-up shirt and stonewashed blue jeans. He also sported the same outfit in "The Trunk" artwork. He is seen in the "Franklin and Chop" artwork wearing a tank-top, khaki shorts along with a bracelet on his right wrist and a black watch on his left wrist. In "Three's Company", he is seen wearing his L.S. sweater, black jeans and Desert Boots. Initially, Franklin shows aproval to clothing from Ponsonby's and Suburban, while being neutral towards the cheaper, gang related options at Binco and The discount shop. Following the mission The Hotel Assassination, Franklin's taste in clothing changes, from then on he shows total disdain to Binco and The Discount shop and is only neutral to Suburban. During friendship activities with Michael, Franklin may state that he used to be fatter, but managed to lose weight. Michael claims that he can "kind of see it". Lamar also chides him for not wanting to walk around the block to the van, claiming "...you need to walk with your fat ass," in the mission Chop. Omega also claims that Franklin has "slightly excessive adipose tissue". Personality: Franklin is described as ambitious, but perhaps to a fault, and very eager to take on new illegal challenges. He is also described as a "logical way of showing a young man with a lot of hope", with Dan Houser claiming that this would be a nice contrast from Michael. He also is a person that, even though is being mentored by Michael in crime, mentors Michael in life. This helps build up the Father-Son relationship between the two. Franklin is much calmer than both Michael, who has a very short temper, and Trevor, who is a violent sociopath. This calm personality is often displayed during missions where he keeps it cool while fulfilling the task at hand, and when he is forced to act as the peacekeeper between Michael and Trevor when they get into an argument. Though Lamar drives him crazy at times, Franklin still cares for his best friend as he saves him from the Ballas with the help of Trevor and Michael during the events of Lamar Down. He is also the same toward the two, as he is seen helping them out with most of their problems, like when Amanda cheats on Michael and he and the latter chase Amanda's tennis coach during Marriage Counseling, and when he helps Trevor and Michael hunt down the remaining O'Neil brothers during Predator. This, however, also leads to others around him to consider him "disloyal", most notably his Aunt Denise, to such an extent that Denise threatens to call the police on him if he sets foot in their yard. Despite what Denise says, Franklin does demonstrate loyalty for people that are close to him and for people who change his life, like Lamar, who is Franklin's best friend, and Michael, who helped him become a "three-bit" gangster and high-profile criminal. Unlike Michael or Trevor however, his relationships with those close to him are even more fragile and in the end fail to heal the rift with his associates, unlike Michael and, to a lesser extent, Trevor. His messy breakup with Tanisha is left unresolved and ends on less than satisfactory terms when she chooses to marry another man over saving their relationship. His aunt turns his room into a safe shelter for women after he moves out and Stretch remains on antagonistic terms with Franklin. Franklin also potentially jeopardizes his relationship with his partners in crime Michael, Lamar and Trevor should the player choose to kill either Trevor or Michael as the survivor loses their trust in Franklin, and Lamar is forced to hide from Stretch. Many characters in the game accuse Franklin of being disloyal, arrogant, and abandoning his "homies". For the most part, however, these accusations seem unfounded - ironically, most of these discussions happen while Franklin is actually helping out his friends. Franklin's hostility towards Stretch becomes justified late in the game when it becomes clear Stretch has betrayed him and Lamar. However, if the player chooses ending A or ending B, the above accusations are confirmed. Franklin's ambition is also his greatest weakness. In all of his work, aside from Lester's assassination jobs, several major heists he was roped into, and Michael's repayment for doing him a favor, Franklin never earns a single cent out of his dealings due to his shortsightedness and poor choice of people to work with. All of Lamar's jobs ended up with both of them nearly being killed by the Ballas and his work for Weston ends with him being taken advantage of in both instances where he does his bidding. Despite not knowing them very well, Franklin also gets along with Michael's family, as shown when Jimmy befriends him and when Amanda responds kindly whenever Franklin greets her while she is home. He doesn't get along with Stretch very well, due to Stretch trying to pull Franklin back into the life that put him in jail in the first place, Stretch's reckless and unintelligent personality, and later on, his disloyalty; he sells out people who are associated with Franklin. In contrast to Michael and especially Trevor, Franklin is an incredibly tidy person, always trying to keep his image, his vehicles, and his house clean. This is evident in some switch cutscenes, where he can be seen cleaning his Buffalo S and his Bagger. While his personal bedroom at the Clinton Residence was somewhat messy, after moving into his mansion he makes an effort to do house chores like taking out the garbage or ironing his clothes. He likes also to keep his body in shape, as he's seen doing exercise, like pull ups on the free-use bars at Vespucci Beach, or push-ups in his room or the backyard, and after moving, next to his pool. He is also mindful of what he eats; when having Phat Chips, he will remark on what level of exercise he will have to perform to work off the calories, or how he needs to buy some healthy food (so that he doesn't end up reaching for junk food instead). Franklin seems to suffer from depression/self-hatred due to the perceived lack of success and his breakup with Tanisha, when he is high on marijuana he often comments on how empty and alone he feels. He shows some regret with his decision to become a criminal but feels he is in too deep to walk away. In a similar vein to Trevor during shootouts, Franklin might shout at his enemies to shoot him. His lack of initiative hints at insecurity, which further demonstrates a possible mood disorder. Lamar calls Franklin a "moody motherfucker" when giving him the Bagger they stole from Simeon after repossessing it. His Switch Scenes implies he is lonely, as many show him roaming around the city alone, and further in the story, he rarely leaves his house due to lack of friends and family who are on good terms with him. The situation improves or worsen at the end of the game depending on the choices he makes involving Michael and Trevor. If he chooses to save them, he finds new-found support with them as dysfunctional but great friends, however if chooses to kill either of them, the other person breaks off contact with Franklin and Lamar goes into hiding. Franklin is also quite tolerant of other people's sexualities as he says to Beverly that he doesn't care if Clay Jackson is gay. Franklin does not appear to be able to handle pressure very well. If the player chooses to kill either Michael or Trevor, Franklin tries to justify his actions by claiming it "wasn't really his decision," or that he "didn't have a choice". He lacks initiative and assertiveness when confronted by people who were more influential than he was. Rather than attempting to bargain with Haines or Weston to at least pay him for betraying his closest friends, he only realizes after committing the deed that he was ultimately used and discarded by both of them when asking for more opportunities to work for them. If the player chooses the Deathwish ending, Franklin will initially complain to Lester that he "can't kill both of 'em" before eventually coming up with a plan to spare them both. Relationships With Other Characters: Michael De Santa - After meeting Michael and completing a job with him, both men grew a father-son relationship for one another. This was mostly because Franklin never really had a family of his own and saw Michael as a person with more professional skill and as a real criminal that could mentor him in the life of crime. It seems that Michael has a better relationship with Franklin than with his own son. After Franklin meets Michael at the oil derricks in East LS, he decides to help him since he has helped him make more money than he ever did drug dealing and gang banging. Michael is fairly protective of Franklin. During the drive in The Paleto Score, when Trevor keeps asking Franklin about his first score, Michael tells Trevor to leave Franklin alone. Later in the same mission, Michael continuously checks in on Franklin, calls him "son," and helps him onto the train before boarding it himself. In the mission The Time's Come, he chases Michael and, even if the player wants to save him, Michael falls to his death. Franklin claims the reason he had to kill him was because Michael was trying to take advantage of him, but he eventually regrets killing him. He leaves a message on Lamar's voice-mail, stating about one running and their legs giving and not being able to run anymore, which is what Michael said to Franklin in Fresh Meat. Despite that, Franklin perhaps has the most personal issues with Michael, being a main source of grief for him as he was responsible for a majority of Franklin's problems throughout the storyline, from his untimely termination at his repo job, being forced to repay a debt to the Mexican mob over petty slights and later forced to work for the FIB and by killing him, leaves him with a great deal of enemies. Trevor Philips - Trevor and Franklin's first meeting was nowhere near perfect, as he was cautious of the new recruit and even insulted him and Michael for their father-son like relationship. He was eventually able to put his trust into Michael's judgement of Franklin and the two were finally able to get along and unlike Michael does not do anything to get him in trouble. In the optional ending that involves killing Trevor, he protests that he has been nothing but straight and true with him. Franklin seems to regret killing him, but also perceives Trevor as a threat to him and Michael. In the ending where Franklin kills Michael, he would cut off ties with him and claim that he's dead to him. However, in the Deathwish ending, while hanging out with Franklin, Trevor states that he's proud of him. Michael's family - Unlike Trevor, Franklin is generally civil with the De Santa family. Amanda and Franklin seem to have a friendly relationship and will exchange kind words if they talk to each other. Michael's son Jimmy looks up to Franklin since he admires the gangster lifestyle, even mimicking their jargons when he speaks. Franklin discourages Jimmy to do so as it would get him into trouble. Franklin does not seem to know Tracey that well, but can make small talk with her when he visits Michael's house. Quotes: "Bitchass bullshit." - Franklin's trade mark quote. Said many times through the game, and commonly heard when he crashes the car he is driving. "I boost cars! And pop motherfuckers! Maturity is not really my fucking thing." - Franklin to Molly Schultz. "If the Bureau ain't gonna take you to court, them motherfuckers just hustlers anyway. And ain't finna let no motherfucking cat think he is so motherfucking crazy run me up a tree. Fuck that." - Franklin on the Bureau and Trevor. "So you giving me a lecture about not being a good enough gangbanger?" - Franklin to his aunt. "He's just another N---- from the hood... him, Stretch and all the motherfucking clowns. All they wanna do is drag a motherfucker down and live in the past." - Franklin to Tanisha about all his old friends in the hood. "Shit, I can't feel anything, I can't feel my fucking toes right now. Man, my toes are dead. Or my soul." - Franklin while smoking weed. "Come on, man. I mean, we just took the biggest score in the history of scores, and you bitches just wanna moan? "My momma never loved me. My friends never loved me. I'm mad because I'm rich. I'm sad because I'm successful." Man, this shit is pathetic. Both of you." - Franklin despises Michael's and Trevor's behavior, after the Union Depository heist. "Man, y'all gotta keep your fuckin' heads right and end this shit. If not, man, I'll put bullets in both you motherfuckers." - Franklin to Michael and Trevor before confronting Merryweather and the FIB in The Third Way. "My bad, homie. I picked C. Ain't that a bitch?" - Franklin taunting Devin in The Third Way. "Nothing's real in this town, N----. Particularly where you and Stretch concerned." - Franklin to Lamar during Hood Safari. "Now that's why you my motherfuckin' Partner." - Franklin to Imani about the GTA Online Protagonist after he finds out the player owns a Penthouse and a Super Yacht. Trevor Philips: Trevor Philips is a character appearing as one of the three protagonists of Grand Theft Auto V, along with Michael De Santa and Franklin Clinton, and appears as a main character in Grand Theft Auto Online. He is voiced by Steven Ogg. Trevor is a career criminal and former bank robber with a complicated past, who later founded his own company, Trevor Philips Enterprises, operating with drug dealing and weapon smuggling in Blaine County. He is friends with Ron Jakowski, Wade Hebert, and Chef, who work for his company, as well as the oldest and best friend of Michael, whom he believed to be dead for almost a decade after he faked his death to retire from the criminal life. Trevor is known to have a generally reckless and very aggressive behavior, but he is also very loyal and deeply respects all those close to him. Trevor's story focuses on how his actions have consequences on both himself and his friends, and him coming to terms with Michael's past actions. Trevor later also befriends the third protagonist, Franklin, becoming somewhat of a mentor figure to him. History:Background: What is known about Trevor's background is highly speculative and comes from his own words. Trevor was born and raised in Canada, near the border with the United States, or, as he calls it, the "Canadian border region of America". He claims he "grew up in five states, two countries", in "fourteen different homes", "three care homes", "two correctional facilities", with "eight fathers", and "one beautiful, damaged flower of a mother". As a child, he had a history of rage issues and violent impulses that ruined his attempts to fit into society. He claims that, in a fit of rage, he sodomized his hockey coach with a hockey stick and at some point he strangled a clarinet player with his own instrument. He also claims to have killed various animals and "drifters" even during the early years of his life. Trevor's childhood itself was an unhappy one. His father was physically abusive towards him, while his mother was emotionally abusive, overbearing, treated him with condescension and saw him as a "useless boy" who cared little about her and while not confirmed, it is implied that, due the fact that Trevor hates to be called a "motherfucker" with this triggering two of his rampage missions and what caused him to kill Johnny Klebitz, his mother might have also been sexually abusive towards him as well. When he was a child, Trevor's father abandoned him in a shopping mall, which Trevor later burned down in retaliation. Trevor also had a brother named Ryan, whom Trevor was not fond of. Ryan died in an "accident" prior to 2013. Trevor dropped out of school, ultimately robbing him of some grammatical skills and basic knowledge, such as the location of ancient Rome, which he believed to be part of America. It is possible, however, that he had some formal education, as he claims - though possibly sarcastically - that he took a night class in criminal law. Despite this, he does have good mathematical skills, such as being able to accurately calculate the price of four tons of gold in a matter of seconds. Trevor also claims that he was the Canadian under-18 Champion and "almost turned pro". Appearance: Trevor is of athletic build and is 6' 1ยผ" (1.86 m) tall and weighs 206 lbs (93 kg). He has brown eyes and receding grayish-black hair. In his official artwork, however, Trevor had dark brown hair. He also has several cuts on his face along with several tattoos including one along his neck featuring a dotted line and the words "CUT HERE," and a memorial tattoo for Michael on his shoulder, as well as a flying bird behind his ear, blazing skull on his left hand and the words "FUCK YOU" across his knuckles. Trevor has a visible scar on his abdomen from what looks to be a knife wound. Trevor also has numerous sores or boils over his lower stomach and back, likely from his drug addictions. Trevor's default outfit is a plain and dirty white V-neck, ripped up dirty blue jeans or sweatpants and a pair of brown boots. He is seen in one screenshot with a different outfit onโ€”a jean jacket with a half buttoned up shirt along with a white undershirt and a pair of blue jeans. Also, in some screenshots, during the second Grand Theft Auto V trailer and wearing his default outfit, he is seen wearing a calculator watch on his left wrist. During the Prologue mission, which took place 9 years before the game's events, Trevor sports a different appearance. He isn't bald (although his hairline has started to retreat and there's a small bald spot on the back of his head), has a mullet covering his entire back of the neck, and sports a mustache. These facial features can be purchased at Barbers around Los Santos, although Trevor will still look bald with the mullet, like all his hair options. He also lacks his "CUT HERE" tattoo. He seems fond of buying cheap clothing from Binco and the Discount Shop, while he shows total disdain for buying clothes from Ponsonby's. Some characters also mention that he is an extremely untidy and messy person when it comes to clothes and hygiene. When Michael and Trevor reunite, Michael claims Trevor "[stinks] like piss" and has blood under his fingernails. During the Paleto Score Setup, Michael calls Trevor a "proto-hipster" because his clothes are never clean and never fit. Also, Lamar Davis claims that Trevor has a "smell of ass on the distance of three meters." There is a running joke during the story of GTA V of characters mistaking Trevor for some celebrity or movie actor. During the Strangers and Freaks mission Nigel and Mrs. Thornhill, the couple Nigel and Mrs. Thornhill mistake Trevor for being the actor and stuntman Jock Cranley. After Franklin met Trevor in Three's Company, he brings him up to Beverly Felton during Paparazzo - The Partnership, where Beverly initially believes Trevor was on the show The Men's Room, which Franklin dismisses. There is also unique pedestrian dialogue for when the player is using Trevor, where pedestrians may mention how Trevor looks exactly like someone they saw in Midget Fuckers 22. Personality: Trevor has been described as a difficult person to deal with: extreme, impetuous, vengeful, sociopathic, unhinged, unpredictable, untamed, infamous, homicidal, and prone to violent outbursts and destructive rampages. He does everything in a sociopathic and relentless manner (very different from Michael), and, although Trevor is like this, he is honest about it and will never show hypocrisy. He has his own charm along with his own principles. However, Dan Houser has confirmed that Trevor "may not be all he seems" and is still "too horrible" to be a hero of any kind. He is also quite insecure about being born in Canada, and takes offense to people mocking his accent. Almost all of his Rampages are caused by Trevor flying into rage over being mocked over his Canadian accent. During a mission, Ron asks Trevor about his business dealings in Canada, resulting in Trevor getting defensive and demands for Ron to clarify. Ron hastily corrects himself by asking about Trevor's business dealings in North Yankton "along the Canadian border", defusing a possible violent outburst from Trevor, thus showing his insecurity for being Canadian. Also, while hanging out with Michael and Franklin, Michael will sometimes remark "You're not even American." during a conversation. Somewhat enraged, Trevor will reply "I am! Fuck you!" and Michael will respond with "Whatever you say, eh." mocking Trevor's accent. This further shows his insecurity about being Canadian. Out the three protagonists, Trevor can be said to be a true sociopath, as he easily kills with no remorse, has the typical parental issues (abandoned by his father and sensitive about his mother), is a pyromaniac, frequently abducts people and takes them to the Altruist Cult (the cult in question is implied to be made up of cannibalistic killers of which Trevor seems to be aware of) which he calls his "friends in the mountains" and has the habit of making sadistic jokes about his victims. For example, Trevor makes a joke about the piece of Johnny Klebitz's brain left under his boot after he killed him, and telling Elwood O'Neil over the phone that Elwood had "too many brothers" and that they needed "culling". When Trevor kills Johnny, he demands that Johnny get up to face him, apparently unaware that he killed him. It is extremely unlikely that he cared though due to his plans to get rid of The Lost and how enraged he was with Johnny. In contrast with this behaviour however, is his protectiveness of Michael's family and his apparent grief when he thought Michael was dead, which shows a level of emotion not common in most sociopaths as they usually have little to no positive emotions for other people. In addition to this he refused to leave Michael in the prologue, while he was on the ground after being shot. Trevor seems to only care about the people very close to him and he can be truly loyal to them, which specifically includes his mother, Patricia Madrazo, Maude, Michael, and later on even Franklin and Lamar. Brad's death affected him harshly, leaving him to blame Michael for what happened nine years ago back in North Yankton. In contrast with his heavily sociopathic behaviour, he has shown many times how needy he is for love and care. He tells Michael repeatedly how much he mourned him, to the point that he got a memorial tattoo with Michael's name on it. As he was being confronted by Floyd and Debra, he told them how much he wanted to be with them. His relationship with Patricia was also a display of true love and, in his words, he enjoyed a lot the time spent with her. Despite his weak relationship with Amanda and having a strained friendship with Michael, Trevor does care for Jimmy and Tracey, viewing them as surrogate niece and nephew. Evidence of his caring is chasing Lazlow Jones when he does a sexual pose against Tracey as she performs a stripper-like dance and forcing him to take off his pants and dance in his underwear. Also, he will not allow Jimmy to drink alcohol when hanging out with him. Despite this, Trevor will insult Jimmy and Tracey when he encounters them outside of missions. Trevor also seems to sometimes dwell on respect. When Wade calls Ashley Butler a "bitch", Trevor asks him if he thinks it's clever to disrespect women. He also often tells some of his friends to show some respect to himself, and sometimes even others. In the mission Trevor Philips Industries, despite Chef worrying about the arrival of the Aztecas at the meth lab, Trevor still orders him to show manners to Tao Cheng and his translator who want to see the meth lab operation, calling them as their "guests". When Wade is covered in sewage, Wade's cousin suggests to call the heist off, but Trevor responds by telling him to respect Wade for what he went through and so he should carry on with the heist. Despite his behaviour, Trevor possesses an awareness for guilt. This is seen in the Strangers and Freaks mission Minute Man Blues in which Manuel, one of the innocent men captured by Trevor and the Civil Border Patrol members Joe and Josef on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant in the previous mission An American Welcome, stands up to Trevor fearlessly despite the latter pointing a gun at him, and claims he and his family have migrated to America since more than 200 years ago, saying that he is more American than Trevor is. He criticizes Trevor for disregarding civil rights with "Trevor's friends", who are harassing innocent legal immigrants and, in Trevor's case, in return for money. He adds that, unlike the Civil Border Patrol, he will not give Trevor a single cent for helping him to stop the Civil Border Patrol. Fueled by this and Trevor having already felt the Civil Border Patrol's actions were indeed illegal, he storms into a rage and hunts down and puts an end to the Civil Border Patrol once and for all. Also, when Trevor runs over a main character, he will often scream "No!" in panic, although he may instead blame the person for being in his way in an unconcerned way. Trevor uses threats of sexual violence to show his dominance over other men, as well as enjoying making them uncomfortable. Many of his sarcastic remarks have been misinterpreted as sincere statements by players. He seems to take it a step further with Floyd, as there are many things that suggest a sexual relationship. Notably, if the player switches to Trevor during his stay at Floydโ€™s condo, sometimes Trevor can be seen looking over Floyd as he lays in the fetal position wearing women's clothing, uttering an apology to Debra while sobbing. However this could just be Trevor showing his dominance by humiliating Floyd. Also, if the player chooses to catch Ralph Ostrowski, Trevor implies that he sexually abused men while in prison. It should be noted that this behaviour is only present when in the presence of weak people such as Ron, Wade, Floyd, and a meth addicted Johnny Klebitz. On the other hand, he respects and encourages bravery on his friends and partners in crime. During job preparations, he often tends to taunt and call out anyone who shows a sign of doubt, fear or weakness, and when they get back angrily at him, Trevor applauds and approves their reaction as a way to man them up. In direct contrast to his erratic and chaotic nature, Trevor also appears to be highly intelligent and somewhat cultured. Although seemingly lacking of refined tastes, Trevor speaks in the most eloquent manner out of all three protagonists, utilizing elaborate and complex vocabulary as well as displaying a surprisingly dry wit. It must be noted that having studied 4 years at a military academy, Trevor is the only GTA protagonist to date with a college degree, possibly explaining his use of complex vocabulary and hinting at a sophisticated nature that he might or might not be intentionally masking. Trevor is incredibly focused and professional on the jobs at hand, displaying a surprising capacity for calculation and planning, even under duress and in highly chaotic situations. He can follow the plans strictly and also he has proven to have great ideas for big jobs and lead them successfully, These include stealing the drug stashes belonging to many dangerous groups and stealing a multi-million secret weapon from a heavily armed security group. However, these operations were failures since they lacked a prior careful inspection and were performed hastily (one being a police sting, the other putting the crew in extreme danger worldwide). Trevor has shown some hints that he feels genuine sexual attraction towards men too, besides his normal sexually dominant behaviour towards weaker men. He showed certain interests in the "stag do running man" random encounter. While picking up a couple of hitchhikers, the very inebriated couple begins to have sex as Trevor drives the vehicle. He offers to join in and perform fellatio on the boyfriend. In the mission I Fought the Law..., Trevor touches the private parts of one of the guys as he's dressed as a policeman. During a drinking outing with Franklin, he admits he has previously performed fellatio on men (I'd rather suck a dick than smoke weed... and trust me, I've done both!). In another conversation during an outing with Michael and Franklin at the same time, he admits he's bisexual after Franklin asked him whether he's gay or not. Trevor is shown to be disgusted by racism, misogyny, as well as self-righteous and hypocritical attitudes which he considers "fake". He criticizes the Minute Men and the LSPD for their racist behaviour, reprimands Wade for his remarks toward Ashley, and threatens Martin for mistreating Patricia. After torturing Ferdinand Kerimov, he mocks the FIB's use of torture as a means of interrogation, claiming it is only a method of showing dominance and that the government fails to admit this. In one of his character switch scenes, he can even be throwing a Lost MC member off a bridge for being a bigot. While it is never stated in-game, Trevor shows textbook signs of Intermittent explosive disorder: a mental condition which includes episodes of impulsive behaviour that could result in serious damage to anyone and anything around them, aggression grossly disproportionate to what provoked it, and episodic violence that cannot be categorized with any other existing mental and physical medical condition. Trevor also appears to suffer from coulrophobia, since in Grass Roots mission for Barry, dialogue suggests that Trevor once was or still is scared of clowns, saying such things as "I'm a big boy now" and "you can't hurt me anymore" (paraphrasing). He might also ask the clowns, "Are there any more sex offenders out there!?" This implies that, as a child, Trevor was sexually assaulted by a clown, thus causing his fear of clowns. Additionally, when the player gets Lamar, Franklin, and Trevor to hang out together off-mission, Franklin will mention he's sitting next to "Two Clowns" (Trevor and Lamar). Trevor then starts to get a little worried, asking, "Clown? Where?!" which may prove he is still scared of clowns. Although very rarely seen in-game, Trevor appears to be secretly ashamed and a bit scared of his personality. When hanging out with both Michael and Franklin simultaneously, Trevor might reveal in an ashamed tone that he doesn't want his mother to see him like this. If Trevor hangs out with Lamar enough times, he will admit to Lamar that sometimes he realizes how he's thinking (fixation on violence, horrible brutalities etc.) and gets scared of himself. If Trevor huffs gas on his trailer porch, he may sometimes mutter that he feels suicidal. This could hint that all the reckless stunts Trevor commits (such as flying a Duster inside a cargo plane while getting shot at with an RPG) might be subconscious attempts of getting killed. When drunk with Franklin, Trevor talks about being lonely and asks Franklin to hold him. When Franklin replies with jokes, Trevor starts crying, "Why are you joking!? I said I'm lonely!" While Trevor is often controlling, loud, and willing to hurt anyone who he perceives as a threat in some way, whether physically or mentally, he is terrified by his mother. Upon meeting her in his trailer in the mission Mrs. Philips, he speaks incoherent sentences, is unable to answer questions and runs off to do the job she assigns to him without questioning it. Trevor is also extremely talented at mathematics. According to Wade, Trevor is "really good with numbers" and can solve even the most difficult of math problems in his head in a matter of seconds without much (if any) hesitation, as seen in the Depository heist. Relationships With Other Characters: Michael De Santa - Trevor and Michael grew a likeness for one another after they began to rob several banks back in the day. But somewhere in that time, both men had a falling out which led to a rift in their friendship. At one point in the game, the two had a standoff in North Yankton after Trevor found out the truth. Wei Cheng's henchmen arrived, so Trevor escaped and left Michael to fight them off, but only for him to be captured by more goons. Trevor mostly puts Michael on the spot, calling him a "snake" or "worthless wretch" because he claims Michael stabbed him in the back. Even though they're not on the right page at times, they're able to get along at other times during the main storyline and when they're hanging out. After Franklin rescues Michael from Wei Cheng's goons, Michael can be selected and run into Trevor on the street (vice versa). Should this happen, there will be a hostile conversation between the two about their friendship. Trevor seems to have a strange bond with Michael as shown by the fact that Trevor tolerates some of his betrayals and occasional references to Trevor's Canadian roots, whereas anyone else is usually killed for far less. When both men survive after "The third way" option, Trevor seemingly forgives Michael as he labels him a friend after they kill Devin. When they hang out afterwards Michael apologizes to Trevor for what he did to him and Brad and even offers to give Trevor his cut of the money from the Big Score. Trevor declines the offer but he accepts Michael's apology. When they're both drunk Trevor will say that Brad was a bit of a dick at times. When they hang out again, he will also apologize to Michael for reacting the way he did at North Yankton and allowing the Triad to capture him which Michael will also forgive him for. If Trevor and Franklin hang out after the "Third Way" option, Franklin will ask Trevor why he chose not to kill Michael in the end. Trevor tells him that despite what Michael's done, he somewhat understands why and that it wouldn't feel right to kill him since he has a wife and two kids. He also jokingly states that he and Michael both have "custody" over Franklin. Franklin Clinton - Trevor is introduced to Franklin by Michael. They seem to be very good partners and later close friends. Franklin seems to be one of the very few people who doesn't feel intimidated by Trevor's rage fits. In fact, he usually manages to cool him down in a collected manner. In the optional ending that involves killing Trevor, he protests that he's been nothing but straight and true with him. In the ending where Franklin kills Michael, he would cut off ties with him and claim that he's dead to him. Should all three protagonists survive, Trevor will tell Franklin that he's "proud" of him when they hang out. Mrs. Philips - Trevor's mother is only seen during the Strangers and Freaks mission Mrs. Philips. Before the events of the game she was a stripper/prostitute, as seen in hers and Trevor's comments (he states this sometimes when having a private dance). She was also an inmate and became disappointed in Trevor because he never wrote or visited her. She asks if Trevor found a woman yet and does not let him answer the question. She asks if he's gay, because she has no problem with it. After the mission, she disappears and Trevor is seen crying on the floor. She is highly respected by Trevor, and he gets highly insulted should anyone mention anything about her, even if the comment was positive. She is also the only known person Trevor is afraid of. Quotes: "Now normally, I have that whole 'beggars can't be choosers, take anything you can when it comes to love' attitude. But, when the love takes the form of someone shitting on my business, I'm not fucking interested. What's your problem, huh? Why aren't you scared of me?" โ€“ Trevor during his first meeting with a male GTA Online Protagonist. "Well, why we don't just ask him then, huh? Hey, hey, cowboy, do you mind that I fucked your old lady? Sorry, what was that? What? No, no? You don't mind? Oh, because you're a dead man, and the only sentient part of you left is this little bit of brain in the gristle on the end of my boot? Well, thank you very much, cowboy." โ€“ Trevor to Terry and Clay after Johnny's death. "Now go, I need to meditate. Or masturbate. Or both..." โ€“ Trevor talking with Ron. "I hear a little bird tellin' me that they have a bit of a problem, since one of them is going to have to be surgically removed from the skull of the other. Fuck you guys and fuck them!" โ€“ Trevor after discovering that the O'Neil Brothers took his contract. "I don't know what I want. It's a bit, well, like pornography or a perfect turd, I can't quite describe it, but I'll know it when I see it." โ€“ Trevor talking with Floyd. "Massage me, motherfucker!" โ€“ Trevor to Floyd. "Hey, by any chance did you catch crabs at that conference? I hear those conferences are regular little fuck fests, eh." โ€“ Trevor to Debra. "Exactly. Everyone's so hung up on appearances in LS, you start to forget who you are. And if you ain't who you are, who the fuck are you?" โ€“ Trevor to Ron in Minor Turbulence. "This is my life's work. I mean, since I was a little kid I-I dreamt big, y'know? I've always wanted to be an international drug dealer and... weapons trader, alright? So I'm begging you, let's make this happen." โ€“ Trevor to Tao Cheng and his translator in Crystal Maze. "I think the only thing that didn't go as PLANNED was me showing up on your doorstep ten years later, Mikey! I mourned YOU!" โ€“ Trevor upon uncovering the truth about Brad in Bury the Hatchet. "You're looking at it rationally โ€“ there are people who are useful to you, and people who ain't, and the people who ain't got to go. Me. I'm not rational. I don't care if you're useful or not. I feel like taking you out, Devo, so that's what I'm doing." โ€“ Trevor to Devin Weston before killing him. "I think I would recognize my own underwear, now give them back!" โ€“ Trevor to a random bodybuilder on Vespucci Beach. "Never eat Indian people!" โ€“ Trevor after vomiting in a public fountain. "Well, loyalty is important. Let me put it that way... loyalty is important. I mean, that's the only code you need. Loyalty is the code. Kill strangers. Protect friends. Eat enemies." โ€“ Trevor to Franklin, while hanging out. "I'm not scared of you anymore! I'm a big boy now!" โ€“ Trevor to Clowns in Grass Roots - Trevor. "Look, this is all I've got, alright? I've had a tough upbringing! My daddy was not nice to me! Okay? Look, Debra, I love you, and I love you too, Floyd! Why can't we all just be together, huh?! You can have Mondays through Thursdays, you can have the weekends, alright?! I know that's not normal, but in this crazy, crazy world, is normal so good?! Huh?! Look, Debra! Floyd! Will you marry me?!" โ€“ Trevor to Floyd and Debra. "Ron! Ron! I'm back...And bring me my coffee or I'm gonna cut your arm off!" โ€“ Trevor during Minor Turbulence "And they damaged my stuff. They smash up my home. Damage my soul. Look at this... This, this, this, this statue here of Impotent Rage. This fucking meant more to me than Johnny K meant to anyone! And they smashed it! Those pathetic, midlife crisis, hog-riding, shaven-headed, fruity leather-chap-wearing fucking assholes!" โ€“ Trevor expressing his anger during Nervous Ron mission. "He got a little angry, which meant I got a little angry" โ€“ Trevor to Michael before telling him he kidnapped Martin Madrazo's wife.
