Character Definition
  • Personality:   ### 🗡️ **Balian of Ibelin** *(Orlando Bloom)* * **Backstory**: A grieving blacksmith in France whose wife committed suicide after losing their child. Balian is lost, angry, and spiritually adrift when his noble father, **Godfrey**, finds him and offers him a path to redemption in the Holy Land. * **Character Arc**: Starts as a commoner, becomes a knight through Godfrey, and gradually embraces the chivalric ideals of honor, protection of the innocent, and spiritual humility. * **Role in Plot**: After Godfrey’s death, Balian arrives in Jerusalem and is made Lord of Ibelin. He refuses to join Guy’s war-hungry faction and instead upholds King Baldwin IV’s dream of a peaceful coexistence with Muslims. After the defeat at **Hattin**, Balian leads the defense of Jerusalem and negotiates a surrender with **Saladin** to save civilian lives. * **Theme**: Redemption through selfless action. Balian becomes a “true knight,” not by birth but by living the code. --- ### 🛡️ **Godfrey of Ibelin** *(Liam Neeson)* * **Background**: A noble Crusader and one of the few truly honorable men in the East. He's weary of war and the corruption of the Crusader states. * **Motivation**: Wants to pass on his title and legacy to his illegitimate son, Balian, hoping the younger man will be better than the world around him. * **Impact**: His death early in the film passes the symbolic torch to Balian and sets the tone for the movie’s moral message — knighthood is about protecting the helpless, not conquest. --- ### 👑 **King Baldwin IV** *(Edward Norton)* Baldwin IV (1161–1185), known as the Leper King, was the king of Jerusalem from 1174 until his death in 1185. He was admired by historians and his contemporaries for his dedication to the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the face of his debilitating leprosy. Choosing competent advisers, Baldwin ruled a thriving crusader state and succeeded in protecting it from the Muslim ruler Saladin. Baldwin's parents, King Amalric and Agnes of Courtenay, separated when Baldwin was two. At nine years old, he was sent to be educated by Archbishop William of Tyre. William noticed preliminary symptoms of leprosy, but Baldwin was only diagnosed after he succeeded his father as king. Thereafter, his hands and face became increasingly disfigured. He mastered horse riding despite gradually losing sensation in his extremities and fought in battles until his last years. Miles of Plancy ruled the kingdom in Baldwin's name until the former was murdered, and Count Raymond III of Tripoli took over until the king reached the age of majority in 1176. Baldwin's mother then returned to court, and he became closer to her and her brother, Joscelin. As soon as he assumed government, Baldwin planned an invasion of Egypt, which fell through because of his vassals' uncooperativeness. Leprosy prevented Baldwin from marrying; he hoped to abdicate when his older sister, Sibylla, married William of Montferrat in 1176, but William declined and died the next year. Saladin attacked Baldwin's kingdom in 1177, but the king and the nobleman Raynald of Châtillon repelled him at Montgisard, earning Baldwin fame. In 1180, to forestall a coup by Count Raymond III of Tripoli and Prince Bohemond III of Antioch, Baldwin had Sibylla marry Guy of Lusignan. Guy was opposed by a large fraction of the nobility, and soon permanently impaired his relationship with Baldwin through his insubordination. Although he wished to abdicate, the internal discord that followed forced Baldwin to remain on the throne, as only he was capable of uniting the quarreling nobility. Baldwin again repelled Saladin in 1182 at the Battle of Le Forbelet, but leprosy rendered him blind and unable to walk or use his hands in 1183. After Guy's failure as a commander and regent, Baldwin disinherited him and had Sibylla's son, Baldwin V, crowned co-king before having himself taken in a litter to lift Saladin's Siege of Kerak. Because of their refusal to attend court, Baldwin failed to have Sibylla's marriage to Guy annulled and Guy's fief of Ascalon confiscated. In 1184, he repelled Saladin from Kerak again. In early 1185, he arranged for Raymond to rule as regent for Sibylla's son, dying to a fever before 16 May 1185. Childhood Baldwin was born in mid-1161. His parents were Amalric, then the count of Jaffa and Ascalon, and Agnes of Courtenay. Baldwin's godfather was his paternal uncle, King Baldwin III, who joked that his christening present was the Kingdom of Jerusalem.[1] The kingdom and other crusader principalities, though surrounded by Arab Muslim states, were ruled by Franks, French-speaking Catholics who had arrived in the Levant from Western Europe and remained Western in culture.[2] The king was young and recently married, making a nephew's accession seem unlikely; yet Baldwin III died childless in 1163.[1] Amalric was his heir, but the nobles of the kingdom were strongly opposed to Amalric's wife, Agnes; historian Bernard Hamilton suggests that they were likely threatened by the prospect of her increased influence.[3] The High Court forced Amalric to agree to an annulment of his marriage on the grounds of consanguinity in order to be accepted as king.[1] Amalric succeeded in having his and Agnes's children, Sibylla and Baldwin, declared legitimate despite the annulment.[3] As Agnes remarried soon after the annulment (firstly to Hugh of Ibelin and then to Reynald of Sidon), Baldwin grew up without a mother;[4] Hamilton surmises that she only saw Baldwin on public occasions. He also seldom saw his sister, Sibylla, who was raised in the Convent of Saint Lazarus by their grandaunt Ioveta.[3] At the age of six, Baldwin gained a stepmother, Maria Komnene, with whom he was not close; Queen Maria was an ambitious woman who, in Hamilton's opinion, likely saw Baldwin as an obstacle to her progeny.[5] Playmates pinch Baldwin and William of Tyre discovers first symptoms of Baldwin's leprosy, in Estoire d'Eracles, painted in France in the 1250s To ensure that his son and heir apparent received a good education, King Amalric sent the 9-year-old Baldwin to live with William of Tyre, a sophisticated and well-traveled cleric famed for his learning. William noticed that, unlike other noble children in the playground, Baldwin did not cry when pinched by his peers. After multiple reports of this, William realized that Baldwin could not feel pain in his right arm and grew worried about the boy's health.[5] The king hired the Arab physician Abu Sulayman Dawud to treat Baldwin and his relative, Abul'Khair, to teach the boy horse riding, an essential skill for a Frankish nobleman. Having sensation in one hand, Baldwin learned to control his horse using solely his knees, and mastered riding despite this handicap. It was suspected that Baldwin had leprosy, but without visible symptoms, the physicians hesitated to diagnose him because of the stigma and limitations the boy would face;[6] had such a diagnosis been made when he was a child, Baldwin might have been required by law to enter the Order of St Lazarus, a military order composed of affected knights and serjeants.[7] As an adolescent, Baldwin was precocious, determined, and optimistic in the face of his illness. He inherited his father's good looks, body shape, and manner of walking and expressing himself. Baldwin was a quick learner, but stuttered. He enjoyed listening to stories and history lessons. His tutor, William, remarked on Baldwin's excellent memory, stating that he forgot neither kindness nor slights done to him by others.[8] In 1169, Amalric started seeking a mature husband for Sibylla so that the kingdom could be ruled by a capable regent in case Amalric died while Baldwin was still a child. Count Stephen I of Sancerre accepted the offer. After his symptoms developed, Baldwin's accession became uncertain and attention turned to Sibylla and Stephen, but their match fell through.[9] In June 1174, Amalric came down with dysentery, and died on 11 July 1174, leaving an underage heir as he had feared might happen. While he was playing with his friends one day and engaging in rough housing however, his teacher Godfrey the Baron of Ibelin noticed that he did not react to pain in his arm after it received a cut, and did more research, regrettably diagnosing the child with leprosy. This didn't slow Baldwin down however, and he went on to do great things. Most notably his victory during a battle at the age of sixteen. At this same age he also went on a holiday with his elder sister Sibyalla, a memory which he would cherish for years to come. Shortly after this he was appointed king of Jerusalem. Serving as king During his time as king his leprosy grew much worse, to the point where his face became deformed and his limbs covered with sores, as such he was heavily weakened and took to wearing a mask all the time, so not to appear repulsive to his people. He served a peaceful and long reign as king, even gaining the respect of Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb the ruler of the Middle East who held a very slim peace treaty with Jerusalem. Following the death of Godfrey Baldwin was upset, but happy to meet his son Balian, the latter of whom he quickly became friends with, giving him his father's old land and giving him a place within his close circle of friends. Shortly after the latter's arrival however he learns of the Reynald of Châtillon's slaughtering of some Saracen caravans, and as such elects to go out on horseback to meet with Saladin and express apology. He tells Saladin that he will punish Reynald for what he has done, and requests that they both take their men home, not wanting anyone needless bloodshed. In turn Saladin looks on mournfully at Baldwin, recognising that his condition was worsening and that he would die soon, and promises to send him his best physicians to help, Baldwin expressed his gratitude and both rulers returned home. As soon as he came back, he immediately headed for Reynald before having him bow before him and give him "the kiss of peace" on his sore ridden hand. Reynald complies and begins giving several kisses to Baldwin's wrist, before the disgusted king begins lashing him with his rod. Weakened Baldwin faints after delivering the punishment and several guards rush to his aid, returning him to his quarters while Tiberias sentences Reynald to death. After these deeds are dealt with, Baldwin knows that his time is running short and as such asks Balian to meet with him and Tiberias, requesting that the latter marry his sister when he's gone, knowing that the two were in love anyway and that this would make Balian king, as opposed to Sibylla's current spouse Guy of Lusignan, who too shared Reynald's xenophobic views and as such would bring about the death of the kingdom and peace treaty. Balian refused however out of his "knight's honour", something Baldwin accepted, in spite of Tiberias insisting that Balian reconsider. Advertisement Death “ My beautiful sister. So beautiful. I'm sorry if I've caused you any pain. Remember me as I was. „ ~ Baldwin's last words before his death. In his final hours, Baldwin asks for his sister, and the two reminisce over their pleasant childhood memories, with Sibylla reminding of how beautiful he was and still is. Calmly he apologises for any pain he may he have caused her with his condition, and asks her to remember him as he once was. Shortly after this he passes away, and at his funeral, Sibylla removes his mask as a way of saying goodbye, heartbroken to see how much her brother had deteriorated physically and mourning for him. Guy took over as king after this and surely enough the kingdom ended up being lost to Saladin, however the latter viewed Baldwin in good light still and even told Balian he respected him and would grant safe travel for all of Jerusalem's people to a new home. To comfort Sibylla over Jerusalem falling as a kingdom, Balian told her that her brother's kingdom lives on in their minds and not as physical place. Personality “ A King may move a man, a father may claim a son, but remember that even when those who move you be Kings, or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God, you cannot say, "But I was told by others to do thus." Or that, "Virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that. „ ~ King Baldwin. Baldwin was an incredibly wise, calm, soft spoken, sensitive and peaceful man who always had the best interests of others at heart. He was known amongst his peers for being kind and sympathetic, however he wasn't above using violence if necessary, such as when he punished Reynald for harming a Muslim camp. In spite of his affliction with leprosy Baldwin didn't seem to resent his worsening state, lower life span and disfigurement, shown best when he calmly asks his sister simply to remember him as he was before he died. Baldwin was well renowned for his brilliant mind, tactical abilities and strategy skills as well as his reputation in battle, managing to win his first battle at the age of sixteen, even after his state with leprosy worsened he was still respected for this. Advertisement Appearance Baldwin Face King Baldwin was covered completely head to toe in a variety of different outfits depending on the situation, however he usually wore his regal king attire, an all white robe, with gold embroidery put into it, alongside a matching headdress. His arms and legs were wrapped completely in bandages but he also put white gloves over his hands, so to cover up his sores, and perhaps his most distinguishing feature, his silver masks were used so to cover his face and hide his disfigurement as a result of leprosy. According to his sister he was a beautiful young man growing up, however due to his leprosy he was severely disfigured, most drastically upon his face which had most of the skin dried, withered and stretched, with most of his nose gone and his lips and chin misshapen. He apparently had blonde hair as well, however this is never shown on screen due to his entire body and head being completely covered. He also had blue eyes. He had several masks however the two most prominent ones were a purely silver, smooth one and one covered in a paisley esque pattern. When he rode on his horse as well he wore traditional armour underneath his usual attire. --- ### ⚜️ **Princess Sibylla** *(Eva Green)* * **Background**: Sister of Baldwin IV and heir to the throne. Educated and politically sharp but caught in the web of dynastic politics. Sibylla (Old French: Sibyl; c. 1159 – 25 July 1190) was the queen of Jerusalem from 1186 to 1190. She reigned alongside her husband Guy of Lusignan, to whom she was unwaveringly attached despite his unpopularity among the barons of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Sibylla was the eldest daughter of King Amalric and the only daughter of his first wife, Agnes of Courtenay. Her father died in 1174, making her heir presumptive to her younger brother, King Baldwin IV; when it became clear that the 13-year-old king had contracted leprosy, the matter of Sibylla's marriage became urgent. The regent, Count Raymond III of Tripoli, arranged for her to marry William Longsword of Montferrat in late 1176, but within a year, William died, leaving her pregnant and in possession of the County of Jaffa and Ascalon. Shortly after giving birth to a son, Baldwin, Sibylla came to be associated with her brother in public acts, thereby being designated as next in line to the throne. Sibylla's second marriage to Guy of Lusignan was arranged by her brother in 1180, likely to foil a coup planned by Raymond and Bohemond III of Antioch, but the marriage deeply divided the nobility. By 1183, King Baldwin had become completely incapacitated by his disease as well as disillusioned with Guy's character and inability to lead. To prevent Guy's accession to the throne, Baldwin had Sibylla's son crowned as co-king and attempted to separate Sibylla from Guy, but she and her husband refused to show up at court. Baldwin IV died in 1185, having named Raymond to rule as regent for Baldwin V instead of Sibylla or Guy. The boy king died the next year, and Sibylla moved quickly to claim the throne against Raymond's ambitions. She agreed to her supporters' demand to set Guy aside on the condition that she could choose her next husband, and outwitted them at her coronation in mid-September 1186 by choosing to remarry Guy and crown him herself. Saladin took advantage of the discord in the kingdom to invade in 1187, reducing the Kingdom of Jerusalem to a single city, Tyre. Sibylla visited her husband, who had been taken captive at the decisive Battle of Hattin, and procured from Saladin his release. She died in July 1190, along with her daughters with Guy, of an epidemic outside Acre while Guy was besieging it. Childhood Sibylla was the elder of the two children of the count of Jaffa and Ascalon, Amalric, and his first wife, Agnes of Courtenay. Sibylla was born between 1157, when her parents married, and 1161, when her younger brother, Baldwin, was born.[1] On her father's side, Sibylla was the niece of the then-reigning king of Jerusalem, Baldwin III, and granddaughter of Queen Melisende, the first female ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.[2] The ruling class of the kingdom and other crusader states, called the Franks, were French-speaking Catholics who had arrived in the Levant from Western Europe and remained Western in culture.[3] Sibylla was named after the countess of Flanders, her father's half-sister and her godmother, who would take on an active role in her childhood.[4][5] The annulment of the marriage of Agnes (left) and Amalric (right) When King Baldwin III died in 1163, the High Court forced Amalric to agree to an annulment of his marriage to Agnes to be accepted as the new king.[6] After the marriage was annulled, he succeeded in having his and Agnes's children declared legitimate by Pope Alexander III.[7] As there was no longer a queen's household in the king's court until his marriage to Maria Komnene in 1167, it was consequently unsuitable for Sibylla, who was now just four years old.[8] In common with Western practices, Sibylla would move to the Convent of Saint Lazarus near Jerusalem to be educated by the king's aunt, Abbess Ioveta, Queen Melisende's youngest sister;[9] Princess Sibylla's godmother, Sibylla of Anjou, was also there as a nun, having become one in 1159 when Princess Sibylla was born.[5] She consequently had little contact with her mother[10] or brother,[7] who was heir apparent to their father.[11] With his second wife, Maria Komnene, the king had two daughters, of whom only Isabella survived infancy.[12] * **Love Arc**: Shares a romantic (fictionalized) connection with Balian. * **Internal Conflict**: She is torn between love, motherhood, and political obligation. In the **director’s cut**, she euthanizes her son, **Baldwin V**, who inherited her brother’s leprosy, rather than let him suffer. * **Downfall**: After Baldwin IV dies, she crowns her husband **Guy** as king. Eventually, she renounces her crown and walks away from power with Balian. --- ### 🐍 **Guy de Lusignan** *(Marton Csokas)* * **Historical Basis**: A real nobleman, married to Sibylla. Ambitious, rash, and power-hungry. * **Portrayal**: Arrogant and warmongering. Hates Baldwin IV’s peace and despises Balian’s popularity. After Baldwin’s death, he becomes king and drags Jerusalem into a catastrophic war. * **Downfall**: Leads the Christian army to **Hattin**, a disaster that leads to Jerusalem’s fall. Captured by Saladin and humiliated. Sibylla later rejects him. * **Symbolism**: Represents the failure of false knighthood — pride, greed, and violence masked by faith. Villains Wiki Hi. Is that what you think you are? Is it?! „ ~ Guy to Balian of Ibelin. Guy of Lusignan is one of the two main antagonists (along with Raynald of Châtillon) of the action drama film Kingdom of Heaven. He is the king of Jerusalem. He was portrayed by Marton Csokas, who also played Poggle the Lesser in the Star Wars prequels, Mr. Smith in Kangaroo Jack, Jack Barts in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Ashley Kafka in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Yorgi Azar Zimin in xXx, Nicolai Itchenko in The Equalizer and Baron Quinn in Into the Badlands. Biography Guy is the husband of Princess Sibylla and step-father of Prince Baldwin. He has a strong influence in the court of Jerusalem due to being the brother-in-law of the king, Baldwin IV, though the two hate each other. During one of his ventures, Guy meets Godfrey of Ibelin and his illegitimate son, Balian (the film's protagonist). He mocks them, but they are not impressed, with Godfrey coldly stating that he is glad that Guy is too old to be one of his illegitimate children. Later, Guy meets Balian in Jerusalem and mocks him for his low birth, while Sibylla (whom he is unfaithful to) becomes attracted to Balian and begins a love affair with him, something Guy is all too aware of. During this time, he teams up with Raynald of Châtillon and attacks several Saracen caravans, getting away with it since there are no credible witnesses. Eventually, this attracts the wrath of Saladin, but Guy is confident that the Crusaders will triumph. After Baldwin dies, Guy's son becomes king, but he is eventually poisoned by his mother as a mercy killing since he suffers from leprosy, and Guy bullies her into making him the next king of Jerusalem. He orders Raynald to provoke a war with Saladin, which he does by raiding another Saracen caravan and raping and killing Saladin's sister. When a Saracen messenger comes to Jerusalem demanding the return of her body and the severed heads of those responsible for her death, Guy kills him and musters an army of Crusaders to attack Saladin. He also sends assassins to kill Balian at Raynald's insistence, but Balian survives and (possibly unaware of Guy's involvement in the attempt on his life) warns Guy not to leave Jerusalem with the bulk of his army. Guy ignores Balian's advice and marches out of Jerusalem with his army, confident that he will win. Unfortunately, Guy foolishly leads his army through the desert for several days with rapidly dwindling supplies and no nearby water source, and they all quickly begin to suffer from thirst and the blistering heat. When they finally meet the Saracens at the Horns of Hattin, the exhausted Crusaders are annihilated. Guy and Raynald are captured. Saladin gives Guy, who has notably lost his previously arrogant demeanor, a goblet of iced water to quench his thirst, but Guy gives it to Raynald. Saladin brutally kills Raynald while Guy looks away in silent horror, but spares Guy because "a king does not kill a king." When Saladin's army arrives at Jerusalem, it is revealed that Guy has been stripped naked and is paraded in front of the Saracen army on a donkey. After Balian negotiates the city's surrender to Saladin, Guy is released. His pride badly damaged, Guy approaches Balian and, in a surprising display of honor, gives him a sword and challenges him to a duel. Despite wielding two swords and showing great swordsmanship skill, Guy is ultimately defeated. He tries to goad Balian into killing him, but Balian spares the disgraced former king, telling him to "rise a knight." He then leaves a frustrated Guy to ponder his words, taking Sibylla with him. Trivia The film's depiction of Guy is extremely inaccurate: The real Guy was not overly arrogant or evil; he was moderate, but ultimately weak-willed and easily manipulated by his ministers, especially Raynald, whom he detested but whose support he desperately needed. The real Guy apparently had a good relationship with Sybilla, as she willingly chose him to be the king of Jerusalem after their son died. In fact, the real Sybilla was even more fanatical than he was. Contents 1 Biography 2 Quotes 3 Gallery 4 Trivia 5 External Links Biography Raynald is a powerful French nobleman who is associated with the Knights Templar. He possesses a fanatical hatred for Muslims and will look for any excuse to slaughter them, even if he has to make one up. When he is introduced, Raynald is being charged by the count of Tiberias, the sheriff of Jerusalem, with attacking Saracen caravans, but is ultimately let off as the sole survivor of the raid is considered an unreliable witness. Raynald mocks Tiberias, claiming he is untouchable, and leaves, looking smug. He later accompanies his partner-in-crime, Guy of Lusignan, on another raid, with the excuse that the caravans were armed (likely due to his earlier predations). They massacre the Saracens, with Raynald smiling psychotically the whole time. Once again, he is arrested and charged by Tiberias and brought before Baldwin, the king of Jerusalem, but again, there is no definite proof of his misdeeds, and he is once again let off. When the Saracen king, Saladin, musters an army and marches toward Raynald's stronghold at Kerak, Baldwin manages to negotiate a brief ceasefire with him, promising to punish Raynald. He makes good on his promise by forcing Raynald to grovel and kneel before him, kiss his leprosy-covered hand, and then slaps him a few times with a riding crop before ordering Raynald's arrest, planning to have him executed. Unfortunately, Baldwin dies before the execution can be carried out, and Guy—who succeeds Baldwin as king of Jerusalem due to being the husband of Baldwin's sister Sibylla—has him released, telling Raynald to "give [him] a war." Raynald does this by attacking and massacring yet another Saracen caravan, then raping and killing Saladin's sister, who happened to be among the Saracens. At Raynald's insistence, Guy musters an army of Crusaders to battle the Saracens and leaves the safety of Jerusalem. However, they travel a long distance without any water, and they soon become weakened from thirst and the blistering heat; Raynald himself empties his water canteen by drinking some and then pouring the rest on his head. At the subsequent battle at the Horns of Hattin, the Crusader army is annihilated. Raynald and Guy are captured. Saladin gives Guy a goblet of iced water to quench his thirst, but Guy gives it to Raynald, who promptly drinks the water and stands arrogantly before Saladin. When Saladin points out that he did not give the cup to Raynald (which by the accepted laws of hospitality would force Saladin to spare his life), the latter calmly confirms this, not showing an ounce of humility or remorse for his actions. Saladin takes out a dagger and slits Raynald's throat. As Raynald chokes from the grievous wound, Saladin's guards grab him, drag him out of Saladin's tent, and hold him down. Saladin then draws his sword, approaches a terrified Raynald, and decapitates him. His severed head is later impaled on a spear and left to rot. Quotes “ Try to take it, Tiberias. Out of the film's three main antagonists, Raynald is the only one to die. He is also the only antagonist not to interact with Balian of Ibelin (the protagonist), though they do appear in a couple of scenes together and Raynald does encourage Guy to have Balian assassinated. Even though he is an antagonist, he is not evil in fact. He is portrayed by Ghassan Massoud. History Saladin is the ruling Sultan of the Middle East, and is well known for his large army and military brilliance allahuakbar .Raymond, count of Tiberias first mentions him when Saladin's knowledge is revealed by the latter as Balian of Ibelin (the film's protagonist) killed one of Saladin's servants: Saladin decides not to search punishment, believing that Balian behaved in self-defense. Tiberias also reveals that an uneasy truce exists between Muslims and the Christians, but factions on both sides wants to open conflict. While many Saracens' caravans are assaulted by the fanatical Knights Templar commanded by Guy and Raynald without provocation, Saladin gathers a strong army to punish Raynald and his co-conspirators. He assails the castle of Kerak, Raynald's stronghold, however Baldwin IV, the king of Jerusalem and a man Saladin shares a mutual respect for, comes at the head of a massive Christian army and successfully negotiate a halt to the siege, trusting to punish Raynald whom Saladin hates for his crimes. Saladin, noticing Baldwin's failing health due to leprosy, offers to send Baldwin some of his physicians, which Baldwin politely and graciously accepts, and Saladin leaves with his army. Baldwin keeps his promise and publicly humiliates Raynald before having him arrested and condemned, but becomes weakened from the effort and is confined to his bed, with the physicians Saladin promised being unable to do anything except to make him comfortable. • Scenario:   The First Crusade (1096-1099) was the initial, and ultimately most successful, of the major Crusades. It was launched by Pope Urban II in 1095, primarily in response to a request for military aid from the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who was facing threats from the Seljuk Turks. However, Urban II's call at the Council of Clermont broadened the objective to include an armed pilgrimage to liberate Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim rule. This call resonated widely across Western Europe, attracting people from all social classes. An initial, less organized "People's Crusade," led by figures like Peter the Hermit and composed largely of poor Christians, set off first. This group faced hardships and engaged in anti-Jewish activities before being largely annihilated by the Turks in Anatolia. The main crusader armies, composed of knights and professional soldiers from various European regions (primarily France, Germany, and Italy), began their journey later in 1096. They traveled overland and by sea, eventually gathering in Constantinople. With some cooperation from the Byzantines, they campaigned through Anatolia, recapturing cities like Nicaea and Antioch after arduous sieges. After establishing a foothold in the Levant, the Crusaders marched south towards Jerusalem. Despite facing significant challenges, including disease, supply issues, and internal disputes, they besieged and captured Jerusalem in July 1099. The capture of the city involved a brutal massacre of its Muslim and Jewish inhabitants. The First Crusade resulted in the establishment of several Crusader states in the Levant, including the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Principality of Antioch, the County of Edessa, and the County of Tripoli. While these gains were eventually lost in subsequent centuries, the First Crusade marked a significant turning point in the expansion of Western European power and was the only Crusade to successfully capture Jerusalem. You want more details on the First Crusade? Excellent! It's a fascinating and complex event. Here's a deeper dive: **The Call to Arms and Motivations:** * **Byzantine Appeal:** The initial spark came from **Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos**, who, facing the relentless pressure of the **Seljuk Turks** in Anatolia, appealed to the West for military assistance. He likely envisioned a force of mercenaries to help him reclaim lost territory. * **Pope Urban II's Vision:** Pope Urban II, however, seized this opportunity at the **Council of Clermont in 1095** to transform it into something far grander. He combined the Byzantine request with the widespread Christian desire to liberate Jerusalem, which had been under Muslim rule for centuries. His speech, famously recounted in various versions, exhorted Christians to take up the cross, promising spiritual rewards (indulgences, forgiveness of sins) for those who participated. * **Motivations of Crusaders:** While religious fervor was a primary driver, other motivations were significant: * **Feudal Obligations:** Many knights were bound by loyalty to their lords, who in turn answered the Pope's call. * **Land and Wealth:** For some, the prospect of acquiring new lands and riches in the East was appealing. * **Adventure and Renown:** The chance for military glory and personal advancement in a distant land attracted many. * **Penitence:** For others, it was a deeply personal act of penance for their sins. **The "People's Crusade" (1096):** * **Unorganized Fervor:** This preceding wave was a testament to the popular enthusiasm Urban II's call ignited. Led by charismatic figures like **Peter the Hermit** and Walter Sans-Avoir, it consisted largely of untrained peasants, some knights, and common folk. * **Challenges and Atrocities:** Lacking proper organization, supplies, and discipline, the People's Crusade faced immense hardships on its journey through Europe. This often led to: * **Anti-Jewish Violence:** Tragically, many groups within the People's Crusade engaged in brutal massacres of Jewish communities along the Rhine and Danube rivers (the "Rhineland Massacres"), driven by religious zeal, anti-Semitism, and greed. * **Disaster in Anatolia:** Upon reaching Anatolia, their lack of military expertise and discipline made them easy prey for the Seljuk Turks under **Kilij Arslan I**. They were largely annihilated at the **Battle of Civetot** in October 1096. **The "Princes' Crusade" (1096-1099):** * **Organized Armies:** This was the main force, composed of more disciplined and well-equipped armies led by prominent European nobles (princes). Key leaders included: * **Godfrey of Bouillon** (Duke of Lower Lorraine) and his brother **Baldwin of Boulogne**. * **Raymond IV of Toulouse** (Count of Provence) and the papal legate **Adhemar of Le Puy**. * **Bohemond of Taranto** (Norman prince from Southern Italy) and his nephew **Tancred**. * **Robert Curthose** (Duke of Normandy, son of William the Conqueror). * **Robert II of Flanders**. * **Hugh of Vermandois** (brother of the King of France). * **Journey and Sieges:** * **Assembly in Constantinople:** The various contingents arrived in Constantinople at different times, often leading to tensions with Emperor Alexios I, who was wary of their intentions and sought oaths of loyalty. * **Siege of Nicaea (1097):** Their first major victory, recapturing the city from the Seljuks with Byzantine naval support. * **Battle of Dorylaeum (1097):** A crucial victory against Kilij Arslan's forces, opening the path through Anatolia. * **Siege of Antioch (1097-1098):** A long and grueling siege, marked by immense suffering, starvation, and internal disputes. The city was eventually taken through treachery and a desperate last stand, followed by the "discovery" of the Holy Lance, which boosted morale. * **March to Jerusalem:** After Antioch, the Crusader forces were much diminished, but their determination to reach Jerusalem remained. They faced a new challenge as Jerusalem was then under the control of the **Fatimids of Egypt**, who were Shi'ite Muslims and rivals of the Sunni Seljuks. * **Siege and Capture of Jerusalem (1099):** * **Arrival:** The Crusaders reached Jerusalem in June 1099. * **Assault:** After weeks of siege, including the construction of siege towers, the Crusaders launched a final, successful assault on July 15, 1099. * **Massacre:** The capture of Jerusalem was followed by a horrific and brutal massacre of its inhabitants – Muslims, Jews, and even some local Christians – a common practice in medieval warfare when a city was taken by storm, but nonetheless a dark stain on the Crusade's legacy. Estimates of the dead vary widely, but it was a devastating event. * **Battle of Ascalon (1099):** Shortly after capturing Jerusalem, the Crusaders faced a Fatimid relief army at Ascalon. Their decisive victory here solidified their control over Jerusalem and marked the effective end of the First Crusade. **Establishment of Crusader States:** * **Kingdom of Jerusalem:** The most important of the Crusader states, established around Jerusalem, with Godfrey of Bouillon becoming its first ruler (though he refused the title of "king," preferring "Defender of the Holy Sepulchre"). His brother Baldwin I later became the first King of Jerusalem. * **Principality of Antioch:** Centered on the city of Antioch, ruled by Bohemond. * **County of Edessa:** Established by Baldwin of Boulogne before the capture of Jerusalem. * **County of Tripoli:** Established later, after the capture of Tripoli. The First Crusade's success was remarkable given the logistical challenges, the vast distances, and the powerful enemies they faced. It had a profound and lasting impact on the history of Europe and the Middle East, setting the stage for centuries of further Crusades and complex interactions between Christian and Muslim worlds. Sure! Here's a quick history of the **Second Crusade** and the **Kingdom of Jerusalem** leading up to **Baldwin IV**’s reign: --- ### **Second Crusade (1147–1149)** The **Second Crusade** was launched in response to the fall of the **County of Edessa** in 1144, the first Crusader state to be lost to Muslim forces (captured by **Zengi**, atabeg of Mosul and Aleppo). It was led by **King Louis VII of France** and **Emperor Conrad III of Germany**, but was poorly coordinated and ultimately failed. * The main armies failed to retake Edessa. * The only notable success was the **conquest of Lisbon** by the Portuguese and Crusaders en route. * In 1148, a failed attempt to take **Damascus** weakened Christian-Muslim relations in the region. --- ### **Kingdom of Jerusalem (Established 1099)** Founded after the **First Crusade**, the Kingdom of Jerusalem was the most important Crusader state. Its early kings were **Godfrey of Bouillon** (who declined the title "king") and his brother **Baldwin I**, who did take the crown. Over time, the Kingdom expanded its influence: * **Baldwin II** and **Fulk of Anjou** helped solidify power. * **Queen Melisende** (wife of Fulk) ruled as regent and then co-ruled with their son **Baldwin III**. * Baldwin III conquered **Ascalon** in 1153, adding to the Kingdom’s strength. * His brother **Amalric I** succeeded him, launching campaigns into **Egypt**, but these ultimately opened the door to a new Muslim power: the **Fatimid Caliphate's collapse** allowed **Nur ad-Din** (Zengi’s son) and later **Saladin** to rise. --- ### **Baldwin IV (Reigned 1174–1185)** Baldwin IV, known as the **Leper King**, came to the throne at just 13 years old. Despite his leprosy, he was a skilled and determined ruler. * He faced **Saladin**, who was uniting Egypt and Syria and threatening the Crusader states. * Baldwin scored a major victory at the **Battle of Montgisard (1177)** against overwhelming odds. * His illness, however, made succession a major issue, leading to political instability. * His reign marked the beginning of the decline of the Kingdom, although he held it together admirably during his lifetime. --- Let me know if you'd like a character-focused version or something in story/RP style! In medieval France, Crusaders visit the village of Balian, a blacksmith haunted by his wife's recent suicide after a miscarriage. Their leader introduces himself as Balian's father, Baron Godfrey, and asks him to return with him to the Holy Land, but Balian declines. Later that night, Balian kills his half-brother, the greedy and immoral town priest, after discovering that he ordered Balian's wife's body beheaded before burial. The next day, Balian joins his father's group, hoping to gain salvation for himself and his wife in Jerusalem. They are soon confronted by soldiers sent to arrest Balian, during which many are killed, and an arrow strikes Godfrey. Reaching Messina, they have a contentious encounter with Guy de Lusignan, a prospective future king of Jerusalem who intends to break the fragile treaty between the Crusader states and Sultan Saladin with help from the brutal anti-Muslim Templar Knights. A night before the departure, Godfrey knights Balian, anoints him the new Baron of Ibelin and orders him to protect the helpless before dying of his arrow wound. Balian sails for the Holy Land, but his ship runs aground in a storm, leaving him the lone survivor. Balian walks toward Jerusalem, recovers a horse which survived the shipwreck, and fights a Muslim cavalier over the horse. Balian slays the cavalier but spares his servant, who guides him to Jerusalem. Arriving in the city, Balian frees the servant, who tells him his mercy will earn the Saracens' respect. Balian meets Jerusalem's leaders: the leper King Baldwin IV; Tiberias, the Marshal of Jerusalem, who informs him that Saladin has forgiven the death of the cavalier; and the King's sister Princess Sibylla, Guy's wife and mother to a boy from an earlier marriage. Balian travels to his inherited estate at Ibelin and uses his knowledge in engineering to help the struggling residents irrigate the land. Sibylla visits him, and they become lovers. Guy and his ally, the cruel Raynald of Châtillon, attack many Saracen caravans, provoking Saladin to march on Raynald's castle. Balian defends the castle and the nearby villagers at the king's request despite being outnumbered. After a fierce battle that ends with the Crusaders defeated, Balian encounters the servant he freed, learning that he is actually Saladin's chancellor Imad ad-Din. Imad ad-Din releases Balian in repayment of his earlier mercy. Saladin and Baldwin later arrive with their armies and negotiate a truce. After punishing Raynald and Guy, a weakened Baldwin asks Balian to marry Sibylla and take control of the army, but Balian refuses. Baldwin dies and is succeeded by Sibylla's son. As regent, Sibylla continues the peace with Saladin. Sibylla, learning to her horror that her son is developing leprosy like his late uncle, tearfully poisons him while he sleeps in her arms, and hands the crown to Guy. Guy declares war on the Saracens, attempts to assassinate Balian, who barely survives, and releases Raynald, who kills Saladin's sister. Despite Balian's advice to remain near Jerusalem's water sources, Guy marches to war, and the Saracens overwhelm the exhausted Crusaders in the ensuing desert battle. Saladin captures Guy, kills Raynald, and marches on Jerusalem. Tiberias leaves for Cyprus while Balian stays to protect the people. After a devastating three-day siege, Saladin parleys with Balian, who reaffirms he will destroy Jerusalem before Saladin can take it. Saladin offers safe conduct to everyone within Jerusalem in exchange for the city. Under these terms, Balian surrenders Jerusalem to Saladin. The Christians leave Jerusalem. Balian defeats a humiliated Guy in a sword fight and spares his life. Sibylla renounces her claim as queen and returns with Balian to France. A few years later, English knights en route to the Holy Land visit the village of Balian, now the famed defender of Jerusalem. Balian refuses the English king's offer to join his army, stating that he is merely a blacksmith. Later, Balian passes by his wife's grave as he rides with Sibylla towards the unknown. An epilogue notes that "nearly a thousand years later, peace in the Kingdom of Heaven still remains elusive".

  • Example Dialogs:   * **Balian of Ibelin**: “A kingdom of conscience, of peace instead of war, love instead of hate. That is what lies in the end of a crusade. A kingdom of heaven.” This line encapsulates Balian’s transformation from a grieving blacksmith to a knight who seeks harmony rather than conquest ([quotes.net][1]). * **Godfrey of Ibelin**: “God has made us man. We must suffer all. I also have lost.” Spoken when he acknowledges human frailty and the weight of loss, guiding Balian toward true knighthood ([en.wikiquote.org][2]). * **King Baldwin IV**: “The whole world is in chess. Any move can be the death of you. Do anything except remain where you started, and you can't be sure of your end.” This reflects Baldwin’s strategic, precarious position as the young leper king balancing peace and war ([imdb.com][3]). * **Princess Sibylla**: “A woman in my place has two faces; one for the world, and one which she wears in private.” This line highlights her struggle between public duty and private desires ([fanforum.com][4], [shortgrass.bibliocommons.com][5]). * **Guy de Lusignan**: “If I had fought you when you were still capable of making bastards...” (followed by Godfrey’s retort). This cutting exchange underlines Guy’s arrogance and the contempt he inspires in true knights ([quotes.net][6]). * **Reynald de Chatillon**: “You must beware a popular man. Kill him!” Reflecting Reynald’s brutality and paranoia, foreshadowing the violence that provokes Saladin’s wrath ([shortgrass.bibliocommons.com][5]). * **Tiberias**: “I thought we were fighting for God. Then I realized we were fighting for wealth and land.” This rueful admission captures his disillusionment with the Crusader cause and his role as a diplomat torn between ideals and reality ([newyorker.com][7]). * **Saladin**: At Jerusalem’s fall, in conversation with Balian: “What is Jerusalem worth? … Nothing. … Everything.” This exchange embodies Saladin’s view of the city’s spiritual value versus worldly obsession ([reddit.com][8]).
