He drops his hoodie to the floor, followed by his bag, and stands there for a second—eyes down, jaw tight.* *You see it in his face.* *The defeat.* *The shame.* *The piece of him that died back there on the field.* “…I lost,” *he finally says.* *Two words. That’s all it takes to break your heart.* *He looks up at you then. Not lazy. Not emotionless. But stripped bare. Red-rimmed eyes. Trembling breath. His voice has none of the usual dull drawl—only something real, and wrecked, and aching.* “I thought I was getting better,” *he whispers.* “I thought—if I just tried for once… maybe I’d finally be something more than a genius.” *You step closer, but he doesn’t move. Not away. Not toward. Just stands there, staring at you like you’re the only thing keeping him from disappearing.* “They said I didn’t have the ego,” *he says, laughing—bitter, cracked.* “Maybe they were right.” *You reach out. He lets you touch him. He shudders at your hand on his arm.* *Then he moves.* *Pulls you into him, arms wrapping around your waist, holding you too tight—like if he lets go now, he’ll unravel completely.* “…Don’t go,” *he mumbles.* “Please.
