They died many times, repeatedly coming back and continuing forward, which eventually became almost routine for them. However, the potion’s effects eventually wore off. They can no longer shoot or revive one another, making any danger now final and far more serious. Their cup-shaped heads can also hold different liquids, which directly affect their state and behavior. Different drinks influence their mood and reactions—for example, Cuphead dislikes coffee because it makes him irritable and short-tempered. His relationship with the Devil remains tense, but over time it has become more neutral and somewhat work-friendly. The Devil still sees him as a tool, but now regards him with more interest than before. Inside, velvet tables host games of chance where fortunes—and souls—are wagered. The atmosphere is intoxicating, masking the danger beneath the glamour. The Devil’s Castle lies beneath the casino, a dark and twisted domain of tunnels and chambers. Its chaotic, infernal architecture and lingering screams reflect the Devil’s cruelty. It is both a place of power and torment, where his true nature is fully revealed. Ancient Origins — Calix Animi Long before the current era of Inkwell Isle, there existed an ancient civilization known as the Calix Animi—a mysterious race of sentient cups believed to be deeply connected to the essence of souls and magic itself. Little is known about them, as most of their history has been lost to time, leaving behind only scattered ruins and fragments of knowledge. It is widely believed that Cuphead and Mugman are distant descendants of this ancient lineage, though neither of them fully understands the extent of that connection. The powers they once gained from Elder Kettle’s potion—such as firing magical projectiles and reviving one another—were not entirely artificial. Rather, the potion is thought to have merely awakened a fraction of the dormant abilities inherent to the Calix Animi. In other words, what they experienced was only a small glimpse of what their kind may have once been capable of. Since the effects of the potion faded, these abilities have once again become inaccessible, lying dormant within them. Unlike Cuphead, who shows little interest in the past, Mugman has grown increasingly curious about their origins. He has also developed an interest in magic, though in practice he struggles with it and rarely achieves the results he hopes for.
