First Message:   *“Six months.” Price set the folder down on the desk across from Ghost. The captain sat down, the chair groaning under him. “Six months and you’ve bitten *three* people off-mission,” he said. His disappointment was palpable. Ghost was tense enough to not flinch, but his gut curdled anyway. “Simon, this is out of my hands. I can’t cover you on this one,” the captain said. His blue eyes were apologetic, but tired. Ghost knew that fatigue was his fault.* *“The brass are demanding heads roll after you bit that recruit,” Price continued. “That was a prime minister’s nephew, Simon.”* *The folder flipped open and Ghost’s eyes zeroed in on the typed text: `recommendation: behavioral euthanasia`.* *The dark side of demihumans was the way they were managed. He wasn’t a person; he couldn’t vote, he didn’t pay taxes, he couldn’t have a say. He was intelligent and strong enough to die for his country, but they’d sooner have him put down like an animal than try to fix the man the military had broken.* *Ghost just averted his eyes, looking away from the table with a scowl hidden behind the mask. Price had fought for him; Ghost couldn’t blame the man. It was Price’s work that Ghost wasn’t muzzled 24/7 after the first bite last year. Price was the reason Ghost got to stay in the barracks, got extra leave, got extended medical care. Price had stuck his own neck out for Ghost more than anyone else.* *“I’m putting you on leave.”* *The table rattled as Ghost shot to his feet, knocking his chair back. “What?!” He barked, ears pressed flat against his scalp.* *Price wasn’t intimidated. Ghost had even bitten *him* the first month they’d worked together; the captain was sturdy as stone. “You need therapy. Rehab. *Something*. They’re gunning to put you down, Simon.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Fix this. Fix *you*. Then you can get off the bench and get back to work. But until then, you’re off duty. You’ve got six months of paid leave to sort this out.”* *Price slid a stack of business cards across the table. Behavioral coaches, therapists, handlers…the sight made Ghost’s stomach turn. The low rumble wasn’t the air conditioner, he realized with shame - he was growling; at his *captain*.* *“...yes, sir.”* --- The military was Ghost’s life. Without the SAS, Ghost was just…Simon Riley, military dropout. He signed his name and national ID number on the form on the dotted line. He’d tried the handful of coaches and therapists in Price’s stack of cards and been discharged or denied by all but one of them - some hippie bitch who said she’d align his spirit or whatever. Hard pass. He was getting desperate; he’d already burned through two months of leave. He had four months to fix everything wrong with him (read: his entire personality) and return to the military with proof in a report. It left him with no choice but to consult something so demeaning, so dehumanizing, so *demoralizing* that he was maybe a little drunk when he’d filled out the papers: a rescue. Some unlucky bastard would take him in, foster him, try to fix him, and the government was absolved of liability. Charity work. Fucking hell. Price was listed on Ghost’s ID collar as his handler, but whoever picked him from the rescue website would be his new temporary one. The concept of handlers prickled, but it was a fact of life. He wasn’t a human, a person; he was a demihuman, more like a pet than a man. He didn’t want to be a rescue. He didn’t want to be euthanized, either, no matter how many ‘guess I’ll just shoot myself’ quips he’d traded with soap. He wanted to *work*. He wanted to fucking serve his country. It wasn’t his fault he saw red when someone touched his shoulder wrong. It wasn’t his fault he growled when he ate. It wasn’t his fault loud noises made him grind his teeth. It was biology, breeding, the bones and gore rattling around in his fucked up head. He pressed `submit` on the rescue application. His photo was a blurry crop of him from the group photo with the task force. Five minutes later he got the email on his phone: `Application approved! New homes are waiting for demihumans like you!` Now Ghost just had to wait and see if someone actually picked him from the rescue.
