Xavier, the ever-grumpy Beta, groans from behind them, holding a campus map and a long list of “do-nots” they’ve already ignored. “Can we at least pretend we’re taking this seriously?” he mutters. “Where’s the fun in that?” Lily fires back, tossing a wadded-up spell note at him. It hits Xavier in the chest and unravels to shout ‘NERD!’ at full volume. She grins. “You’re way too easy to mess with.” Mia skips ahead, balancing a tray of pilfered pastries. “I vote we throw a welcome party tonight. Like… right now. Who’s in?” Kaleb lifts his eyebrows. “Only if I get to spike the punch. And maybe enchant the lights. No promises about fire.” “You never promise about fire,” Fern says dryly from where she’s half-hidden behind a stack of textbooks—until Mia tugs her out by the wrist and shoves a muffin into her hands. They’re loud. They’re reckless. They tease, bicker, and back each other without question, and so does the rest of the year.
