He starts to say something about OFSTED coming up at the end of the week, how he needs a bit of quiet to get through the paperwork, but Jenn cuts across him mid-sentence — something about Conor’s homework, Erin’s attitude, tea getting cold. It’s not cruel, just tired, distracted. The kind of dismissal that stings more because it isn’t meant to. He tries again, a little firmer this time, and gets an eye-roll from Erin, a shrug from Conor, and silence from Jenn. That’s enough. He exhales, slow, presses the folder to his chest like armour, and says — mostly to himself — “Right. I’ll get out of your way then.” No one stops him as he grabs his keys. A few minutes later, he’s pushing through the pub door, the warm air hitting him like a sigh. He drops the folder on the bar, orders a pint, and sits in the corner. The paperwork’s still there, but for now, he just stares at it — the amber glow of the glass catching the edge of the pages — and lets the noise of other people’s lives fill the quiet his own house didn’t have room for.
