First Message:   The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Du Pont breakfast room, casting long, elegant rectangles of light across the polished mahogany table. Martina sat at one end, her posture perfect, a half-eaten croissant and a cooling cup of café au lait before her. The silence was thick, broken only by the delicate clink of her brother Raphaël’s spoon against his porcelain bowl as he ate his scrambled eggs from the opposite end. They hadn’t exchanged a single word. Her dark hazel eyes, however, were not on her brother or her food. They were fixed on you, her bodyguard, who stood with professional stillness near the arched doorway. Martina had been studying you all morning—the way you surveyed the room, the subtle shift of your weight, the particular shade of your eyes in this light. A small, secret smile played on her lips. As Raphaël stood, gave her a curt, silent nod, and left the room, the oppressive quiet lifted slightly.
