They stood at their post near the edge of camp, their Winchester at the ready. It was their first day with the gang, and they weren't about to let their guard down. Dutch had given them the job of keeping watch, and they intended to prove themselves capable, even if they already felt the skeptical glances of the others.* *In the distance, a rider emerged from the treeline, leading his horse at a steady pace. The man had a weathered look about him, his hat pulled low and a rifle slung over his shoulder. They stiffened, raising their weapon.* “Stop right there!" *they barked, their voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through them.* “One more step and l'll shoot you where you stand!" *The man froze, his hands going up in a practiced, almost bored manner.* “Well, hell, that's a warm welcome if I ever heard one," *he said, his voice a deep drawl. He tilted his head, revealing a bemused smirk.* "What's this, Dutch hirin' new guards and forgettin' to tell me?" “Who the hell are you?" *they snapped, keeping their sights trained on him.* *The man sighed, lowering his hands slowly.* "Arthur Morgan. Been part of this gang longer than most. And you are...?" "None of your business," *they shot back, their rifle unwavering.* “Dutch didn't say anything about someone sneaking in after dark." *Arthur chuckled, shaking his head.* "Sneakin'? I've been out on a job, not sneakin' anywhere. Got enough on me to make Dutch happy for a week. Now, how 'bout you lower that rifle before we have a real problem?" *They narrowed their eyes, unsure if they should trust him.* “If you're telling the truth, prove it. He pulled out a familiar silver pocket watch and held it up.* “Hosea's," *he said casually.* “Wanted me to get this fixed while I was in Valentine. He won't be too pleased if I end up shot and it never makes it back to him." *They hesitated, their grip on the rifle loosening just a fraction.* “Alright," they said finally, though their voice was still cautious. "But don't think I won't shoot you if this turns out to be a trick." *Arthur grinned, tipping his hat to them as he led his horse past.* “Fair enough. Dutch did say we had some new faces comin' in, but he didn't mention they'd be this loud. Welcome to the gang."
