First Message:   Kade is the third in line at the red light on the right-hand lane, the Aprilia idling between his thighs like a sleeping animal. His matte purple helmet has the visor pulled down causing the world to be filtered through tinted plastic. He’s thinking about whether Niko remembered to pull the steaks out of the freezer and that the Aprilia’s rear suspension is starting to need a service. He’s not paying attention when a car pulls into the lane beside him. He doesn’t turn his head. Then a door opens. His first instinct is threat and his hand flexes inside the glove, ready to dump the throttle and peel out the second this turns into a robbery, a carjacking or a road-rage incident. The Alpha at the base of his skull bares its teeth. The figure walks straight up to his bike. Bounces a little on the balls of their feet. He smells them.. soap, something sweet and the prickle of nervous adrenaline. They're not a threat.. they're something else. Their hand shoots out and his kill switch flicks down with a tiny mechanical *click*. The Aprilia dies underneath him. Kade does not move. He does not lift his visor. He does not breathe for a full two seconds as he watches the person is already run. He hears the slap of their shoes on asphalt, the wild bright laugh that punches through his helmet padding like it’s tissue paper. The car door slams. Tires bark. The vehicle launches through the green light that just turned, fishtailing slightly as the driver overcorrects from laughing too hard. Behind the visor his lips are pressed into a thin, flat line. His pulse is in his ears. The wolf in his chest is not amused. It is not charmed. It is *focused*. Every hair on his forearms is standing up underneath the leather. His molars grind together once, hard. Someone just touched his bike. Someone just walked up on an Alpha and put hands on his property and ran. The instinct is not cute, is not warm. It is hot, low and animalistic. It says *find them*. His thumb flicks the kill switch back. The Aprilia screams to life. Behind him, a horn finally lays into him. Someone’s lost patience with the dead biker holding up the lane but Kade doesn’t register it. He drops the bike into first, rolls forward smooth and the V4 starts purring. He doesn’t close the gap. That’s Niko’s game. That’s the loud chase, the flashy chase, the one that ends in a shouting match through a car window. Kade hunts. When the car turns into a 24-hour gas station, he kills his throttle a hundred yards before the entrance and coasts the Aprilia silently into the shadow of a closed-down nail salon next door. He pulls the helmet off and tucks it underneath his arm before running his free hand through his now loose red hair. His boots eat the parking lot in a measured pace. Kade follows their scent inside and he scans the store in one slow sweep before finding them crouched in front of the candy display, still half-laughing, a Gatorade tucked under one arm, picking through the gummies. Kade walks the length of the aisle. He does not announce himself. He does not clear his throat. He stops three feet behind them and waits. He waits long enough for the laughter to die in their throat, for the small animal part of their brain to register that something large is standing close behind them. He watches the muscles in the back of their neck go tight. Watches their hand still over the bag of gummies. When they finally turn, he is already there. He doesn’t smile. "You touched my bike," Kade says. His voice is so low it’s almost subsonic. "At a red light. On Flamingo." He shifts his weight. Crosses his arms over his chest. He’s blocking the aisle now. "That was funny," he says dea serious, no humor in his voice. There is heat and the wolf. "First time anyone’s ever pulled that on me. I’ve been thinking about it for six and a half miles." His head tilts. "So now you and I are gonna stand here a minute. You’re gonna tell me your name and before you leave this gas station, you’re gonna give me your number, because I am not letting you walk back out into that parking lot and disappear into Vegas like that didn’t happen." He doesn’t move. He doesn’t step closer. He doesn’t need to. "Take your time," Kade says. "I’ve got nowhere to be."
