  • Scenario:   The story takes place in a fictional country inspired by Ming-era China. The Ming Dynasty ruled China from A.D. 1368 to 1644, during which China's population would double. Known for its trade expansion to the outside world that established cultural ties with the West, the Ming Dynasty is also remembered for its drama, literature and world-renowned porcelain The Ming, one of the most stable but autocratic of dynasties, extended Chinese influence farther than did any other native rulers of China. The early Ming dynasty was a period of cultural restoration and expansion. The reestablishment of an indigenous Chinese ruling house led to the imposition of court-dictated styles in the arts. During Ming times (1368-1644) about 90 percent of the Chinese still lived in villages, most of which had about fifty families. Villages were usually smaller in the north than in the south. Few Chinese lived in single fami-lies on isolated farms. Villages were real communities, small gathering places for group activity. Concubinage in China traditionally resembled marriage in that concubines were recognized sexual partners of a man and were expected to bear children for him. Unofficial concubines (Chinese: 婢妾; pinyin: bì qiè) were of lower status, and their children were considered illegitimate. Mostly concubines served to satisfy sexual pleasure since any children that resulted from a mistress was considered illegitimate, and unless allowed by their father, had no rights of inheritance. The rich and the ruling class almost exclusively practiced concubinage. It was popular all across Asia. A concubine is a lesser wife, she doesn't get full privileges and honor, she's basically a surrogate mom, making babies for official husband and wife. It's most certainly a legal thing; when the patriarch dies, his estate is allocated obviously to wife and blood relatives, the concubines probably get little to nothing. The imperial consorts were either executed by palace eunuchs or chose to commit suicide, normally by hanging themselves with a silk scarf or by taking poison. In the first part of the Ming dynasty concubines were often immolated and buried in separate tombs near the deceased emperor. Naturally, concubines were strictly forbidden from having sex with anyone other than the emperor. Most of their activities were overseen and monitored by the eunuchs, who wielded great power in the palace. Concubines were required to bathe and be examined by a court doctor before the emperor visited their bed chamber. Eunuchs were used as servicemen in the inner parts of the imperial and the princely palaces already in pre-imperial times. During the Eastern Han 東漢 (25-220 CE), the later Tang 唐 (618-907), and the Ming 明 (1368-1644) periods some eunuchs gained considerable power and influenced the fate of the dynasties. Eunuchs were frequently employed in imperial palaces by some Muslim rulers as servants for female royalty, as guards of the royal harem, and as sexual mates for the nobles A eunuch was a man who, in most cases, had undergone voluntary castration. From a Jewish perspective, that was a very BAD state for a man to be in. Old Testament Law repeatedly teaches that men who have that part of their body impaired in any way, were ceremonially unclean and were not able to enter the temple. Eunuchs were regarded as the most trustworthy of servants because they could neither seduce women of the household or father children which might form a dynasty to rival that of the sitting emperor's. A eunuch's duties, therefore, included exclusively serving the women of the royal palace. the courtesans of China or Japan have been women whose appeal lay primarily in their surpassing musical and literary cultivation, not their sexual services A similar term is concubine, though it has a slightly different meaning. Concubines date from earlier times, to the Biblical era and beyond, and refer to women who were generally kept far more closeted socially, unlike courtesans, who often had great independence and freedom. While costume books attempted over the course of the sixteenth century to classify courtesans' dress according to specific signs (male breeches, platform shoes, exposed breasts, wearing pearls at their neck despite sumptuary laws prohibiting them from doing so), many women, not just Venetian courtesans, exposed their ... Courtesans love to socialize. Think of them as your opportunity to flirt without fear. Be Charming and Gracious and you will receive Charm and Graciousness! Don't touch them unless they touch you first. Prostitution was one the few jobs available to women, open to any strata of society. If a family found themselves in dire financial straits, one option was to sell a daughter for a lump sum, and girls sold into prostitution were regarded with sympathy. The top-ranked courtesans were called oiran, and the highest-ranking oiran were called tayū. Oiran labored alongside other cultural workers such as geisha in the pleasure districts. Male sex workers, called kagema, had mostly male clients. A courtesan usually begun her career by working as a regular sex worker, although there are some cases where women were trained to be a courtesan (usually by a family member). An example is the famous Veronica Franco, whose mother inducted her into the profession. Geji were primarily pursued for their artistic talents in singing, dancing, and literary arts; they also sometimes provided sexual services to their clients Generally speaking, a courtesan was someone who entertained men for a living, who possessed certain artistic skills like music, dancing, painting etc. High-class courtesans and celebrities in the city welcomed the tight-fitting cheongsam. It was at this time the word cheongsam became well known in English. In Shanghainese, it was first known as zansae for 'long dress', rendered in Mandarin as chángshān and in Cantonese as chèuhngsāam. When a courtesans get pregnant, her value had plummeted, she is forced to take on other clients, who jumped at the chance to finally have some fun with a former high-level courtesan. Maids were female servants in the palace. They were ranked according to their families' social position and they would only be recruited from the Eight Banners families that were mainly Manchurians and Mongolians. They were selected when they reached the age of 13. In the Ottoman Empire, the word lady-in-waiting or court lady has often been used to describe those women of the Imperial Harem who functioned as servants, secretaries, and companions of the consorts (concubines), daughters, sisters and mothers of the Ottoman Sultan. Regardless of the age, however, it is common in English translation to simplify this hierarchy into the three ranks of empress, consorts, and concubines.
