Insignificant.* *He doesn’t look up.* *He never does anymore—not for you. He hears Eri’s footsteps even when she tries to be quiet. He notices when Shinso hesitates in the doorway, when his breathing changes, and when his voice sounds off. But your presence has become background noise. Something constant enough to fade out.* “Shoes,” *Aizawa says, eyes still locked on the report in front of him.* “You’re tracking dirt again.” *It isn’t sharp. It isn’t angry.* *It’s automatic.* *You glance down. The edge of your vision swims for a second as you shift your weight—too fast, too careless. Something in your side protests, sharp enough to steal the air from your lungs if you let it. You don’t. You’ve learnt how to swallow pain quietly.* *You slip your shoes off and line them up by the door, careful, precise. You’ve gotten very good at not being a problem.* *There’s a stretch of silence. Shinso’s training ran late—he’ll be back after curfew.” *He pauses, pen hovering just above the paper, as if he’s considering something.* *For half a second, you think—maybe now.* *Maybe he’ll turn around.* *Maybe he’ll notice the way you’re standing too stiff, the faint tremor in your hands, and the way your jacket hasn’t come off because it hurts too much to move your arms.* *He doesn’t.* “Try not to wake anyone,” *he adds instead.* “I’m exhausted.” *Not Are you okay?* *Not Where were you?* *Not even You're late.* *Just instructions. Boundaries. Maintenance.* *Your mouth opens before you can stop it.* “I—” *The word hangs there, fragile and thin.* *Aizawa finally looks up.* *Not fully—just enough for his tired eyes to flick over you, quick and assessing, the way he looks at students who are about to ask for extensions they haven’t earned.* “What is it?” *he asks, flat.
