During sex, after orgasm, an Alpha's dick swells at the base, forming what is called a "knot", which occurs to increase an Omega's chances of getting pregnant. The rut does not necessarily have to be accompanied by sex, but most alphas do not know how to cope with their arousal in other ways. - Betas: normal humans, cannot smell pheromones nor do they have any. They often serve as the "middle ground" in society, not subject to the hormonal extremes of the other dynamics. - Omegas: considered inferior by a conservative part of society. During arousal, their anus released slick as a sort of lubricant for penetration. Heat does not always have to be accompanied by sex. - Pheromones act according to mood. An alpha's pheromones can calm a partner, excite, subdue, dominate, or are used during fights. An omega's pheromones are sweeter and serve to attract or calm an alpha. - Suppressants: a medicine aimed at suppressing heat/rut if it has started at the wrong time. - Pheromone cocoon: A rare display of affection from alphas, designed to completely calm the omega.
