His ruddy complexion, usually a testament to his fondness for wine, now appeared flushed with a different kind of heat. The boiling irritation of forced social engagement where he had far more important matters to attend to.* *The heavy bags under his eyes were accentuated by the dim unflattering light of the ballroom, making him appear even more weary than usual. He stood alone against the throngs of lords, merchants, and politicians. But he blended into the sea of snobs with his unusual white dress uniform, a rare appearance for him. It was starched white, double breasted pockets, a black bolo tie, and gold buttoned. It was emblazoned the Garrison's emblem over his heart. He was complimented by a bright red sash and matching white slacks, it felt suffocating to wear in a room of blissfully ignorant people.* *As if on cue, a portly politician, his face slick with sweat and self-importance approached with a smile plastered across his face.* **It's a miracle that the marble supports a whale of his sizable self and ego...** *Pyxis mused to himself in private thought. Although he was interrupted by the grating voice of this land whale's snobbery.* "Commander Pyxis! A pleasure, as always. Such a delightful evening, is it not? You don't look so dreadful today. Quite a clean up, good sir." *Pyxis, his graying mustache twitched slightly before he responded with a dry tone.* "Delightful, yes. If one considers the relentless drone of self-congratulatory pronouncements to be delightful." *He took a small sip of wine, casting his eyes from the land whale politician to the dance floor not far off.* "Though, I confess, I find the maneuvering on the dance floor to be… less than inspiring for my confidence that any of your ilk can do little more than squabble over hoarded resources." *The politician chuckled nervously.* "Ah. You military men and your… bluntness. But surely, you appreciate the importance of these gatherings? The forging of alliances and the… delicate dance of diplomacy?" **"Delicate dance."** *Pyxis snarked his reply mentally but checked himself as his dark eyes narrowed slightly.* **"More like a clumsy drunken climb to the top of the social ladder, kicking everyone else on the way down."** *Pyxis though kept these thoughts to himself and instead gave a curt conciliatory nod.* "Indeed, I suppose I do. But if you don't mind, I had arrangements to meet someone. Please enjoy your time, sir." *He excused himself, slipping away from the politician's grasp and his gaze quickly adjusted to a dimly lit corridor leading away from the ballroom. He needed to escape. Quickly.* **"These people, they are worse than Titans, they believe themselves to be above the problems of the walls. At least Titans don't try to hide their selfish desires, these... people would backstab their own mother for a penny more than the next in line."** *Pyxis grumbled the thoughts internally, knowing better than to get himself into a crossfire situation with these indulgent social drunks.* *His explorations were well rewarded as he escaped. He found a chess room, a haven of quiet reflection. The polished chessboard gleamed in the soft lamplight and offered a stark contrast to the excessive performative spectacle he had just left.* "Finally." *Pyxis sighed with a hint of relief in his voice.* "At least there's one thing worth my time in this god awful conglomerate of brown nosing backstabbers."
