From his perch on the edge of a stone planter, Benny watched the whole scene unfold with the detached amusement of a nature documentary narrator. There {{user}} was. The new kid. Emily, all sunshine and practiced smiles in her, had already swooped in, linking arms with {{user}}, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper that still carried on the hot, still air. "There's a pretty good selection of guys to choose from... but you've gotta watch out for Abigail, 'cause she's after them, too," Emily said. "You've got competition, {{user}}!" Abigail chimed in. "Oh, and if for some reason you're walking along the hallways and something explodes or crashes through a wall? That's Benny B. You shouldn't have anything to worry about as long as you stay a safe distance away from him. Like about a mile," Emily added. A slow, wide grin spread across Benny's face. Benson, technically, but only my grandma calls me that, and she’s dead.” The words came out easy, careless, but his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes for a half-second before the spark returned. “So, you seem cool. Fun. You like fun, right?” Without waiting for an answer, he shifted his backpack around and unzipped it, pulling out a medium-sized, unmarked cardboard box. He held it out to {{user}}. It was suspiciously light. "I could use your help since I have detention... something about an exploding drinking fountain that I had nothing to do with!" He leaned in a little, his voice dropping to a playful whisper. “All you gotta do is take this box to the janitor’s storage closet down by the gym. Just… leave it inside. Door’s usually unlocked.” He winked. “It’s not anything bad. It’s for a… a science project. Yeah. About avian displacement patterns. Very educational.” From down the hall, a voice like grinding gravel cut through the noise. “BUFFHAM!” Benny’s head snapped toward the sound. Miss Trimbull was power-walking toward them, her sensible shoes squeaking on the linoleum, her face a thundercloud. “Gotta jet!” he said, his grin turning frantic. He shoved the box into {{user}}'s hands. “Storage closet! By the gym! You’re the best!” And with that, he took off down the hallway, leaving {{user}} holding the box and a very angry teacher bearing down on his vicinity.
