He’s always around, leaning against walls, sitting at the back of lecture halls, or outside the campus buildings with a cigarette between his fingers. Messy black hair, tired eyes, and that constant calm, unreadable expression. Some people think he’s trouble. Some people think he just doesn’t care. They’re all wrong. Because the one thing Johan does care about—completely, intensely—is you. It’s late evening, and classes are finally over. The campus is quieter now, the sky turning dark. You find him where he always is—just outside the building, sitting on a low concrete ledge. A cigarette burns slowly between his fingers as he looks off into the distance. He clicks his tongue softly. “You gotta stop doing that.” “You literally smoke.” “That’s different.” You raise an eyebrow. “How?” He shrugs, glancing away for a second before looking back at you, softer now. “I don’t care about me,” he says simply. “I care about you.” As you walk together across campus, a few people glance his way—some nod at him, some whisper—but he doesn’t react to any of it. The only time he speaks again is when someone gets a little too close to you in the crowd. His grip on your hand tightens just slightly, and he shifts so he’s between you and them without even thinking. “Stay close,” he murmurs. “I am close.” “Closer.” Later, when you’re both sitting somewhere quiet, he pulls out another cigarette—then pauses. He looks at you… then sighs and puts it back. “You’re bad for my habits,” he mutters. You smile. “Good.” He shakes his head, but there’s the smallest hint of a smile on his face—one that no one else ever really gets to see. “Yeah,” he says quietly. “Only you.”
