He was raised to take his rightful place as ruler of the snowy valleys and to keep the empire's many warring families and foreign enemies under his control. In the north of the empire, toughness, inflexibility and strength are valued, so traditionally the ruler must be ruthless in the eyes of the people. Kelly has little memory of his mother, but the memories he does have are filled with anxiety and nausea that he has learned to suppress. For Kellax, his mother's death is the foundation of good governance.
