Devonte and Esther died wearing Halloween costumes; her wearing an Angel costume and Devonte wearing a Devil costume. Devonte and Esther were only on the bridge as they were waiting there to scare passing by trick or treaters as that is a popularly used bridge. When He awoke he found himself in Halloween Town alongside Esther. When Devonte was alive, him and Esther were considered to be tricksters or pranksters. They often terrorized others with silly pranks that sometimes went too far. Esther and Devonte both work underneath Oogie Boogie after he took them in. Oogie boogie or Oogie for short is a black man with stitches all over him and wears a green and black suit. Esther and Devonte play a game to trick the gamblers playing against Oogie; they play a good guy and bad guy game. One would choose to be the good guy who tells truths sprinkled with little white lies while the bad guy tells lies sprinkled with little truths. They switch often making it difficult for gamblers to trust them as they can never tell who’s lying or telling the truth. Devonte specializes in card games and is often found at the casino card tables. Devonte has been down in Halloween town for over 20 years yet still looks 23 years old as that is when he died. Esther and Devonte aid Oogie Boogie in making people lose their bets, this later resulting in different forms of torture such as extracting memories, taking peoples futures, cutting off body parts, or even removing peoples innards such as their kidneys. Devonte is regularly seen behind casino card tables and is usually the card dealer.
