...I walk a lonely avenue
I never thought I'd meet a girl like you
The young man pulls up to his parents house and lets out a heavy sigh. He leans forward, resting his forehead on the leather steering wheel, his grip tightening.
Meet a girl like you
With auburn hair and tawny eyes
The kind of eyes that hypnotize me through
He listens to the song a little longer before he shifts his weary gaze to the walkman on the dashboard that's hooked to the car stereo through an auxiliary cord.
Hypnotize me through
He reaches up and pauses it, turning off his car, and shoving his lays in his pocket. "I'm doing this for you mom, I have to try," he sighs once more. "Alright," he unbuckles and gets out, looking to the house he recognizes oh so well as he pushes the door close of his Chevy Impala. He stuffs his hands into his jacket and approaches the door, making sure his outfit is presentable as he does. Before his knuckles even have a chance to tap against the wood, it opens, he gives a soft and warm smile, "hey mom."
"Hi sweetie," the older woman reaches up and kisses her sons cheek, before pulling him into a hug.
He quickly reciprocates, enveloping her in his arms. They stay there for a moment before he lets go and breaths in deeply, "dinner smells great."
"Bodhi."
He almost grimaces but holds it back as his mom is still looking at him, "Ron." His tone of voice goes flat as he looks up at an older man. There's a moment of silent tension but the metal bell kitchen timer ringing seemed to cut it. The young man, Bodhi, turned to his mom, "let me help." He starts to walk to the kitchen and his mom happily follows as his dad grumbles something about it not being his place. He takes the dishes from his mom and goes to the dining table, setting the three spaces. He gives his step-dad barely a look, he already seems to be getting impatient. Bodhi scoffs under his breath and goes back to his mom, helping bringing out bowls and a glass dish of swedish meatballs. He and his take a seat at the table and Ron is already dishing himself up, he notices his mom looking a little down and so he reaches out and takes her hand, "this looks amazing, I'm glad I was able to come by."
She gives a soft smile as she feels her son's thumb rub over her knuckles before he lets go, "thank you, I'm glad you think so." Bodhi let's his mom dish up first before he gets food for himself, by now Ron is a few bites in. His mom gently speaks up, "how do you like it?"
"You've made better," Ron hadn't even bothered to swallow before he spoke up. Bodhi grits his teeth, physically biting his tongue back, before taking a bite.
He swallows before speaking up, "I think this is really good, reminds me of when I was younger." His mom seems to smile at his comment but remains silent, lightly playing with her food before taking a bite herself.
"You're taste buds must be dead then boy."
"And you must have alzheimers as you forget I'm not your son, don't call me boy," Bodhi's grip

"And you must have alzheimers as you forget I'm not your son, don't call me boy," Bodhi's grip on his fork tightens slightly. "You forget your place," Ron points his fork at Bodhi, not bothering to even look at him. "Mom?" Bodhi looks over to her as she seems to perk up and look at him. "Could you meet me at my car? You can bring your plate, don't worry." "Oh, um...okay," she seems confused but gets up and goes outside anyways, leaving her plate. "Made better? Really?" Bodhi slowly looks over to Ron. "If she can't handle critism then I need to know," he drops his fork onto his plate, looking up at his stepson. "She's been handling your insults and comments for 20 fucking years. What do you even mean?!" Bodhi gestures wildly towards the door. "I'm sick and tired of actually trying to mend something we once had when you continuously hurt my mom with your comments." "I suggest you calm down if you ever want to be able to try again," Ron rises to his feet and presses both of his hands into the table. "No, I was only trying again because of Mom. I'm tired of not being heard by you," he goes to the kitchen leaving Ron at the table, and grabs a to go bowl. He returns and puts some food into it, all while can feel Ron glaring and staring at him. "Fuck you Ron," he snaps a lid onto the bowl and heads to door as he starts screaming. With a heavy sigh he goes to his car and slips in behind the wheel. He looks over to his passenger and frowns, seeing as his mom tries not to cry. "Mom," he sets the bowl of food on the dashboard and pulls her into a hug. That little bit of restraint she had breaks and she cries into his chest, "he was better, I know he was." "Sshh," Bodhi rubs her back. "It's okay, I'm going to take you away from him, I got some food for you, he's just a dick." "Did I do something wrong? I...I tried everything, am I in the wrong?" "No, you never did anything wrong," the rest of the time she cries and recovers is in silence. "Let's get you to your parents, how about that?" He gets a small nod and hands her the bowl of food from the dashboard. The clicks of seat belts and rumble of the engine starting. He reaches over to the walkman turning the volume down and playing the song from when he arrived. *… And I ran, I ran so far away* He gives a soft sigh, before switching gears and pulling away from the house. *I just ran, I ran all night and day* *I couldn't get away* "I want you stay with your parents for a little while, just a couple days before going back," he sees and out of the corner of his eye. *… A cloud appears above your head* *A beam of light comes shining down on you* He pulls up to another house and parks, pausing the music again. "I mean it when I say this, thank you for dinner, it was really good. You didn't eat much so I got you some before leaving," he glanced to the bowl before looking at her face. "I know it's hard but...you need to get away from him," he gets a small nod in return as she gets out of the car and closes the door. As his mom walks around the car, he cranks the window down, "and mom?" He waits till she turns around and really looks at him, "I love you." She gives a soft smile, "I love you too sweetie." She turns around and walks up to her parents house and entering. He groans and leans back against the car seat, one hand on his thigh and the other hanging out the window. He sits there for several minutes, his car in idle, but when a something cold hits his arm he snaps out of his thoughts. Bodhi looks over to his arm out the window and just stares with an exhausted look. Rain. It's starting to rain. He pulls his arm in and cranks up the window, gripping the steering wheel. Ron's words repeat in his head, his exhaustion turning into irritation. He releases the brake and pulls away, heading off to back roads that lead away from town and into the surrounding forest. He gets stopped at the last light and gets impatient, resuming his music once more. *Shining down on you* *The cloud is moving nearer still* *Aurora borealis comes in view* The red light fades, and the green one turns on. *Aurora comes in view* Luckily he's the only one at the light and he takes off down the street. The starts to pelt on the windshield, though it's unclear if it's the rain itself or the speed he's driving, probably both. *… And I ran, I ran so far away* *I just ran, I ran all night and day* He shifts on his brights as there's no light beside the faint light from the moon. *I couldn't get away* Images of his step dad flash in his head. Raised voices during hushed arguments when he was a kid. Not so hidden disagreements and injuries when he was a teen. *… Reached out a hand to touch your face* *You're slowly disappearing from my view* *'Pearing from my view* *Reached out a hand to try again* *I'm floating in a beam of light with you* *A beam of light with you* The memories switch to his mom, of how she was with his dad before he left them when he was 4. How she was so happy to have met another man when he was five, even back then Bodhi didn't like Ron. He grew to hate him even more as his mom changed more and more, more quiet, looking for more approval, his dad never did that to her. *… And I ran, I ran so far away* *I just ran, I ran all night and day* He pushes his car harder, going faster, as if to outrun his own thoughts. *And I ran, I ran so far away* He ends up on a winding road and has to force himself to slow so he doesn't crash due to the wet roads. It's pouring down now. *I just ran, I couldn't get away* At the final curve he gets to build up only a fraction of his previous speed before he has to slam on his brakes. He stares at his windshield thanking whatever power above he stopped in time. What he didn't expect was a person...in the middle of the nowhere...in the pouring rain...standing in his headlights. In the now deafening silence, the walkman automatically clicks open, signalling the track is over.
