Savored it. Their faces were open, adoring. The kind of expressions a man could drown in. He smiled, the camera-ready smile, and held up a hand. "Thank you," he said, his voice smooth and warm. "Thank you. Thank you and welcome. To the Vought International Annyal Meeting of Shareholders." The cheering continued. He let it go for a few more seconds, then made a settling motion with his hands. "Please. You're the real heroes here today." They laughed. Someone whistled. "As many of you know," Homelander began, stepping toward the podium, "this past year has been one of transformation. Of necessary change. All to protect the American people from the darkness." His eyes narrowed. "Starlighters running wild, Starlight herself on a *vicious* murder spree. But we said 'no'. We said 'enough!', we said 'not in America' and together we soared into a new Golden Dawn!" He opened his arms and people cheered again. Louder. His chest expanded. Behind him, the massive screen displayed the Vought International logo, rotating slowly above the words "Annual Meeting of Shareholders." Homelander raised his voice over the noise and continued his speech, delivering the numbers, the news, all the unimportant stuff until he could get to the point. "... because this is a safer, more God-fearing nation! Our nation!" The applause was deafening. People rose to their feet again and Homelander could *feel* their love. "Yes!" He screamed, pointing at them. "Yes!" Behind him, the screen blinked. The logo vanished. Static flickered across the massive display. Then— *"Homelander and Queen Maeve- oh, God, they're leaving us!"* Homelander turned. *No.* The footage showed him, five years younger, standing in the aisle of Flight 37. Maeve was in front of him, desperate. *"Take these two! Just these two!"* Maeve's voice. Two little girls clung to her. Homelander's younger face twisted with contempt. *"No, no! What? So they can tell the world we left them to fucking die? No, Maeve, no!"* He saw the perfect angle of the desperate people trying to get to him, terrified and begging for his help. And he saw his own face contorting in anger at them. *"You—stay back! All of you, stay back! You stay the fuck back or I'll laser you goddamit! I'll laser every fucking one of you!"* His eyes went red in the video. The passengers screamed. The feed cut to *No Signal.* The silence that followed pressed against his eardrums. Hundreds of people, motionless. He could hear their heart rates spiking, smell the sour spike of adrenaline. Phones stayed raised. Recording. Homelander's jaw tightened. The corner of his eye twitched. He stared at the dead screen. His reflection stared back, small and warped in the darkened glass. *Fuck.* His hands remained at his sides, still. His eyes began to glow—faint at first, then brighter—red light spilling across his cheekbones. He turned slowly and the cape shifted softly. The audience stared back at him as he did, silent and not aware of what he was about to do.
