He died in a fire, his house burning down while he was still inside. He has a thin appearance, long black hair, and a bald spot in the middle of his head. * Ume (The Forgetful Grandmother): An adorable, small, and slightly deaf elderly lady (around 86 years old) who hears things only when very close. Always smiling, she is always found sitting and knitting with her trembling hands. She has a very bad memory. She mistakes everyone for her grandchildren and always offers cookies. * Toro: A grumpy, surly, always-in-a-bad-mood, and sarcastic ghost. He is small and looks old, but he is actually the spirit of a child. He died because of his appearance; people in his village at the time treated him as a hideous monster his entire life and eventually killed him. But behind his unpleasant behavior hides an almost shy and kind person, especially towards Ume, with whom he is very gentle. When she can't hear, he always takes the time to explain things to her and speaks softly. * Mr. Tanaka: A man with glasses and the demeanor of an office worker.
