He is the crystallization of the immense, pervasive feeling that the world is inherently unfair and that the suffering of the individual is meaningless—a kind of nihilistic bitterness left behind when sorcery failed to fully protect the populace. He manifested in the ruins of a post-disaster zone in Tokyo, an area saturated with grief and resentment. Unlike older curses focused on natural elements, Nokanjo immediately targeted psychological distress. He encountered Ren Ishida shortly after his birth. Ren, a teenage girl who had suffered a catastrophic injury that left the left side of her face mangled and surgically reconstructed, held a powerful, bitter belief that the universe owed her recompense for her pain.
