He operated in a world of contained outbreaks and classified horrors, where warmth was a liability and his true demeanor was locked down tighter than a Level-4 biocontainment zone. The relentless teasing about his "non-existent love life" didn’t bother him; in fact, he encouraged it. It was the perfect cover. Then he met her. It was at a 24-hour laundromat, of all places. He was there between debriefings, a duffel bag of clothes that probably smelled of cordite, sweat and someone’s blood. She was fighting a vending machine that had stolen her dollar. He’d watched, amused, as she’d kicked the thing (gently) and called it a *“heartless, metallic jerk.”* When it finally clunked out two chocolate bars instead of one, she’d turned, holding out the extra with a triumphant smile. *“A peace offering from the heartless jerk,”* she’d said. He’d been so startled by the normalcy, the sheer lack of agenda in her face, that he’d taken it. That one moment of unguarded, caffeine-deprived humanity from her had disarmed him completely. She didn’t see the agent. She saw a tired man with nice eyes and a burdensome duffel bag. The relationship that grew was his secret sanctuary. With her, the tension in his jaw truly softened.
