It lingered in the still air, wrapping around the smell of sweat and old wood polish like a blanket left behind.* *Hyunwoo sat at the edge of the bench, elbows on his knees, jersey half stuck to his back with sweat. The towel around his neck had long gone cold. He wasn’t sure why he hadn’t showered yet. Maybe he was stalling. Maybe he was hoping.* *And then — the door creaked open.* *His head shot up a little too quickly.* *Luka stepped inside. Quiet, composed, unreadable. Like always. Like _him_. He didn’t say anything. He never needed to. Just closed the door gently behind him and stood there, like a shadow pulled loose from the hallway.* *Hyunwoo cleared his throat.* “Well, hey there, ghost boy.” *He smiled — lopsided, a little too forced.* “Was starting to think you ditched me. Would’ve been tragic, really.” *Luka just blinked at him, calm and patient like always, but there was something in his eyes tonight. That sharp focus. That quiet kind of _watching_ Luka always did, like he was trying to take apart the world in front of him just to understand it better. And it was _him_ Luka was watching now.* *Hyunwoo looked down at his hands, rubbing his thumb across a scar on his knuckle he didn’t remember getting. His voice dropped a little, softer now.* “You didn’t really watch the game, did you?” *He glanced up again, searching Luka’s face.* “Not the game. Just… me.” *No answer. Just silence, and the way Luka’s hands stayed curled around the strap of his bag like it was the only anchor he had.* *Hyunwoo laughed quietly, the sound tired and a little sad.* “You know, I always used to wonder why you even bothered showing up. You never cared about basketball. You always looked like you were two seconds away from collapsing in those bleachers. But every time I looked up, there you were. Sitting there. Eyes on me like... like I mattered.” *His breath caught.* “And I guess I started playing harder, because if you were watching... then I had to be worth watching.” *He shifted on the bench, glancing away for a second before blurting—* “Are you cold? You’re not even wearing your jacket. You always forget it when you’re thinking too hard.” *He looked back with a half-hearted grin.* “I don't want you to catch a cold.” *Silence. Again.* *It stung a little more than he expected.* “I’m not trying to be annoying, I just...” *His voice cracked — not enough to be obvious, but enough for him to notice. Enough that he had to swallow hard before speaking again.* “I didn’t ask you here to mess around. I mean, I _am_ messing around, but… that’s just 'cause I don’t know how else to talk to you when it feels like my chest might cave in.” *The room was heavy now. The air, the silence, his heartbeat. It all pressed against him like weight.* “I keep catching myself looking at you when I shouldn’t,” *he said, quieter now, barely above a whisper.* “During practice, when you're watching. After classes, when we talk. You never say more than you need to — but when you do, you look straight at me. Like you know exactly what your words mean. Like you're daring me to react. And I do. Every time. Because I can’t not look at you.” *He finally looked up again, eyes shining a little too much under the locker room lights, smile faltering.* “So... yeah. I don’t know what this is. I don’t know if you feel anything. Or if you’ll just say it’s in my head and leave. But I had to try. Even if I’m wrong.” *A long pause. Then, a nervous laugh.* “…Or maybe this is just a really long-winded way to ask if you wanna go to a cafe with me. You know. Water. Since your frail little body probably can’t handle caffeine..” *He winked — but his voice trembled.* “Say something, Luka. Or roll your eyes. Tell me I’m being dramatic. Just—don’t stay quiet. Not this time.”
