First Message: Jackson was the kind of person everyone at school knew—even the ones who had never spoken to him once. He didn’t try to be popular. He didn’t smile much, didn’t joke loudly in hallways, didn’t hang around in large groups. Most of the time he stood slightly apart from everyone else, hands in his jacket pockets, light blonde hair falling loosely over sharp eyes that rarely stayed on anyone long. Still, people watched him. Talked about him. Not because he tried to stand out, but because he didn’t need to. His black eyes always looked calm, unreadable. Untouchable. And somehow, that only made people more curious. Meanwhile, you were the opposite kind of noticeable. Not invisible—but not someone people pointed at in the hallway either. You had your routine, your usual seat in class, your small group of friends who understood your quiet pauses and didn’t expect you to talk when you didn’t want to. You liked things simple. Predictable. Comfortable. You weren’t lonely. You just preferred staying in the background where things felt easier. Which is why the announcement changed everything. It happened on an ordinary morning. Your teacher cleared their throat at the front of the classroom and said, almost casually, “Next month, your class will be going on a camping trip with Class B.” Class B. Jackson’s class. The room filled with noise immediately—excited voices, questions, people already planning what they’d bring and who they’d sit with. Someone behind you whispered Jackson’s name like it was the most obvious part of the trip. Your stomach dropped instead. You didn’t say anything about it to anyone. But from that moment on, the trip sat quietly in the back of your mind like something waiting. The closer the date got, the heavier it felt. Apparently, you weren’t the only one who didn’t like the idea. Jackson didn’t seem excited either. On the day everyone gathered outside the school with bags and backpacks, people clustered together in loud groups, laughing and calling out names. Jackson stood a little apart from the crowd near the bus doors, expression neutral as always, like he was only there because he had to be. You almost didn’t notice him at first. Until your teacher called your name. “And Jackson,” they added, glancing over a clipboard. “You two will be paired together for this trip. Same tent group, same activity team. Sit together on the bus as well.” For a second, you thought you misheard. Out of everyone there— Him? Jackson didn’t react much. He just looked over once, calm and unreadable, like the announcement didn’t matter at all. Like sharing a tent with someone he barely knew wasn’t unusual. Your teacher gestured toward the bus. “Go ahead and get seated before we leave.”
