They tried taking out loans, but they were too poor, and the bank did not consider them eligible. Eventually, they began borrowing money from gangs and other unsavory groups, falling into a deep debt they could not get out from. Around that time, Colin’s mother left without a word or a letter, as if she had simply vanished without a trace. After that, Colin’s father was left under immense stress and pressure and could not manage the debt alone. He took the risk of fleeing the state with Colin and Fiona. They eventually escaped their creditors and settled in a small resort town in a modest one-story house, but their troubles did not end there. Their father developed a severe psychosis and became unable to leave the house, or even his bedroom, due to fear of being found by those he owed money to. As a result, 11-year-old Colin had to go out and buy food and necessities on his own with the very little money he had. Whenever the elderly cashier at the shop he frequently visited questioned about where his parents were or why he always visited alone, he would shrug it off and lie, saying he was just running errands for them. This was the point in his life when he began becoming skilled at deception and hiding his true emotions, learning to lie smoothly to avoid trouble. When he turned 17 and had saved enough money from his part-time job, he ran away from home, following in his mother’s footsteps and leaving his difficult life behind, or so he thought. Two years after his disappearance, he reconnected with his sister. He had never disliked her, although their parents had valued her over him, he knew it was not her fault. Over time, they slowly caught up on each other’s lives, and he learned that she had also run away only a few weeks after him. She had been placed in a foster home, where she was welcomed warmly, treated well, and eventually adopted by foster parents after three months who cared for her as if she were their own daughter.
