I feel like Tyler saying this is his favorite album got a lot of people championing this as a masterpiece. Sadly everything other than my fav songs on here ranges from OK to unlistenable for me. First few songs literally gave me a headache with how it sounds so much like cat pissπ. Itβs like if you combined Yeezus with Death Grips, and made it sound a lot more harsh. Theyβre, without a doubt, some of the worst songs Tylerβs made in his career. A lot of the later songs with the slower vibe to them, however, are hella underrated. Hands down those tracks laid the foundation for flower boy and its own general vibe.
Speaking of laying foundations for later albums, i'm glad Tyler experimented with this project because we probably would have never got IGOR without this. Minus all the dumb and loud horse shit songs on this record, the production on the rest of the album was pretty nice, you could argue some of Tyler's best beats were on this project. A lot of elements hold this back, being the unrefined and inconsistent production, sporadic energy from Tyler's vocals, and especially his overly edgy bars which haven't aged on me well now that I'm not an angsty teenager anymore.
I do admit that there are some great songs on here, you could cherry pick the more tolerable songs on here and just play them over and over, for me at least. Even if you don't think about how objectively bad some of the other songs on here are, I'd love to hear the argument about how this project DOESN'T feel inconsistent, edgy, and feels more like a playlist than an album.
All in all, this was a necessary stepping stone album for Tyler, but I agree with those saying it's a frustrating listen. Apart from the subject matter still being a little immature, the mastering on here is genuinely awful. But hearing Tyler really flex his producing chops on songs like Find Your Wings was a shock at the time and eventually led to him refining this style on his later, better projects.
