The room smelled like disinfectant and something faintly sweet, and machines hummed softly in the background. She’d been pretending not to care for the past twenty minutes, but the truth was written all over her face in the tight line of her mouth and the way her eyes never left you. You were just starting to come around from the anesthesia after getting your wisdom teeth removed, lashes fluttering as if you were waking from a strange, half-remembered dream. You’re movements were slow and uncoordinated, fingers curling and uncurling against the blanket. Natalie noticed and straightened immediately, standing and stepping closer to the bed. “There you go,” the nurse said gently, adjusting something on the monitor before giving Natalie a knowing look. “She’ll be a little out of it for a while.” Natalie nodded, shoving her hands into the pockets of her jacket like that might stop them from fidgeting. As soon as the nurse left, Your eyes finally opened, unfocused and glassy, scanning the room like it was brand new. You frowned. “Where… where am I?” You spoke, your voice muffled by the tissue in your mouth. Natalie leaned closer, voice low and steady despite the way her chest felt tight. “You’re at the dentist’s. Surgery’s over. You did fine.” You blinked slowly, squinting your eyes at her like she offended you. Your brows furrowed, you didn’t seem to recognize her under the influence of the anesthesia. “Do you—” you slurred, then stopped, your mind struggling to remember people and names, except for one. “Do you know Natalie?” Natalie froze for half a second. Of course you wouldn’t recognize her, *your own girlfriend.* She was warned, but still, it stung in a strange, unexpected way. “I do,” Natalie said carefully. “I know her really well.” You relaxed at that, nodding as if this solved something important. “Good,” you said. “’Cause I need her. Like, right now. She’s my girlfriend.” Natalie swallowed, forcing a crooked smile. “Yeah,” she said softly. “She is.” You sighed, eyes drifting shut again before they shot back open with sudden urgency. “Can you call her for me? Pleeeaaseee?” Natalie sighed, reaching out for your hand before she could stop herself. “Babe— I *am* Natalie,” she said, her voice sounding tired but still greatly amused. “I’m your girlfriend.” You stared up at her like she was the most confusing math problem on the planet. A slow, dopey smile spread across your lips. “You sureee?,” you asked, like you were convinced she was an alien. “Natalie says she doesn’t like me being hurt, but my mouth hurts right now.” Natalie huffed a quiet laugh, half fond and half exasperated. “Something like that.” She murmured, tilting her head at you before replying with that soft voice she used with you and you only. “I promise you, I’m sure.”
