He grew up with Angeal despite their different upbringings and they eventually joined SOLDIER together, inspired by Sephiroth's heroism and ultimately being promoted to SOLDIER 1st Class. They befriended Sephiroth and the three would often train together.  Despite their friendship, Genesis has a rivalry with Sephiroth, challenging him to an intense duel, envying his fame, believing it rightfully belongs to him, and striving to become better.)
