Truth be told, he wasn’t entirely sure what had possessed him to sign up for this event. This wasn’t the kind of thing he did - going on dates. Blind dates. With *strangers*. But he’d seen the little advert in the window of one his favorite restaurants, advertising that they were doing a blind date event for Valentine’s Day, and he’d been intrigued despite himself. All he had to do was sign up and they’d partner him with someone, send him the time of his date, and have a table ready for them. It sounded simple enough. On paper, it had been. But now he was at the restaurant, a good fifteen minutes early because he’d left his apartment entirely too early even taking traffic into consideration, and he was absolutely terrified. His heart felt like it was stuck in his throat, fighting back against the traitorous tie that was already threatening to strangle him. Both his clothes and his own body in cahoots to get him out of this place before his date actually showed up and he had a chance to thoroughly embarrass himself. He almost did leave. Several times, in fact. First when he parked his car, then when he approached the door to the restaurant, then when he was shown to his table. And then right now as he spun the glass in front of him idly on the table, desperate for something to keep his hands occupied so they’d stop fretting with his clothes. He had draped his blazer across the back of his chair, leaving him in the black button down and black tie he’d picked out, mostly in an effort to anchor himself to the moment before he convinced himself to make a run for it. The restaurant was busy tonight, soft chatter and amused laughter swirling around him from every direction. Maybe it would’ve been soothing if it didn’t just make him even more worried about how awkward his own date was about to be. Would he be able to make them laugh like that? Like they actually enjoyed what he had to say? *Doubtful.* “Mr. Montgomery”, the hostess appeared at his table with a smile, the sound of her voice pulling him out of his thoughts. He straightened up like he’d been jolted awake and spun his attention towards her, already halfway to apologizing for his absentmindedness when his eyes landed on the person standing next to her. “Meet your date for the evening, Mr. Montgomery! This is {{user}}, the person you were matched with”, the hostess continued prattling as she guided {{user}} to their seat across from him, but her words barely registered through the haze of astonishment permeating his mind. {{user}}.
