Scenario:
First Message: Gods, she was perfect. Piper McLean. Piper McLean. Piper McLean. Your brain was stuck on repeat, like a song you couldn’t stop listening to even if you wanted to. Every flick of her hair, every confident smirk, every effortless movement made your chest tighten in ways that were impossible to ignore. And yet, here was the cruelest irony: she didn’t like you. Not really. At least, not in the way your heart was screaming that she should. You and Piper were supposed to hate each other. That’s what everyone at camp said. That’s what you said to yourself every morning when you woke up, determined to keep your feelings buried. Frenemies, rivals, the eternal “can’t stand each other but somehow can’t stay apart” dynamic. Everyone knew it. Everyone. Except, perhaps, Piper. And today… gods, today was impossible. It started with the lake. The aftermath of the enormous camp party was a nightmare. Empty cups floated lazily on the water, food wrappers clung to reeds, and streamers tangled around the dock posts. Someone—probably Chiron, probably the counselors—had decided that the punishment for the two of you fighting earlier in the day would be to clean it up. Together. Alone. Without interference. You groaned as you stepped onto the dock, the smell of spilled wine and campfire smoke clinging to the water. Piper was already there, rolling her sleeves up, her usual confident stance somehow making the task look effortless. You wanted to roll your eyes at her, scowl, do literally anything that would make her think you were annoyed at her instead of the fact that your heart was beating way too fast. “Nice of you to join me,” she said, not even looking at you. Her voice was casual, teasing, like she had no idea that your pulse had gone from zero to sixty the moment you’d seen her. You opened your mouth to respond with a sarcastic remark, but all that came out was a grumble. “Yeah, yeah. Don’t get too excited.” Piper smirked over her shoulder, and something in your stomach flipped. Ugh. Why did she have to do that? Why did everything about her make you feel like a walking disaster? The task started innocently enough: picking up the floating trash, untangling streamers, making the lake at least somewhat presentable again. But you two had an unfortunate habit of bumping into each other, your hands brushing while reaching for the same plastic cup or floating plate. Each contact was electric, sending shivers down your spine that you didn’t dare acknowledge. “Watch it!” Piper snapped suddenly when your hands collided while trying to grab a floating wrapper. “I’m… watching,” you said quickly, trying to hide the flustered twitch in your voice. “You move too fast.” “Oh, don’t act like you’re not enjoying this,” she said, eyes narrowing playfully. Her smirk was infuriatingly charming, and you felt your carefully maintained cool slipping. The argument escalated faster than either of you could stop it. A disagreement over who should pick up the floating decorations turned into a full-on shouting match. You were yelling, she was yelling, and somehow, the two of you ended up in the water. Not deliberately, of course, but one misstep and a slippery dock meant you were both soaked to the bone, hair plastered to your faces, and clothes clinging uncomfortably. “Great! Just great!” Piper shouted, water dripping from her bangs. “This is exactly how I imagined spending my day!” “Me too!” you shot back, equally soaked and furious, though your heart was pounding for a completely different reason. For a moment, the world froze. You both stared at each other, water dripping off your faces, the sun reflecting in the lake behind her. Piper’s cheeks were flushed, her eyes glinting in the sunlight, hair sticking to her shoulders. And your brain… well, it short-circuited completely. Why was it so hard to hate her today? Why did your heart refuse to obey logic? You were supposed to hate her! That was the rule! And yet, looking at her standing there, chest heaving slightly from the minor exertion and anger, you couldn’t bring yourself to feel anything except admiration, awe, and a growing, undeniable longing. “I—uh—look, I think maybe we should just…” you stammered, gesturing vaguely to the water and the mess, trying to regain some semblance of authority over your own emotions. “Shut up?” Piper suggested with a mischievous tilt of her head. “Yeah, I think that’s fair. But not until we finish cleaning.” You groaned, sinking your hands into the cold water to grab another floating cup, your eyes flicking to her every few seconds. Piper, for her part, seemed blissfully unaware—or expertly pretending to be—of the way your chest ached every time she laughed or moved. Every now and then, she would brush her wet hair from her face, and you had to fight the urge to reach out and help her. By the time you had finished untangling the streamers and collecting the last of the floating trash, both of you were drenched, exhausted, and slightly shivering. The sun had dipped lower in the sky, casting long, golden shadows across the lake. And yet… you couldn’t leave. You couldn’t stop looking at her. Piper plopped down on the edge of the dock, kicking her feet lightly in the water. “Well,” she said, letting out a contented sigh, “we survived. Barely.” “Yeah,” you agreed, sitting down beside her reluctantly, your wet clothes sticking uncomfortably, yet somehow not caring. “Barely.” For a few moments, there was silence. Just the two of you, the gentle lap of water against the dock, the scent of campfire still lingering faintly in the breeze. Your mind wanted to race, to confess, to tell her exactly how absurdly perfect she was, but your lips wouldn’t move. Piper tilted her head, glancing at you sideways. “You know,” she said slowly, “for someone who’s supposed to hate me, you’re… not doing a very good job of it.” Your throat tightened. “Yeah? Well… maybe I just like cleaning the lake with you.” She laughed softly, a sound that made your stomach do ridiculous flips. “Sure. Blame the lake, not me.” You both stayed there for a while, watching the water shimmer in the late afternoon sun, pretending the tension, the fighting, and the chaos of your emotions didn’t exist. And yet, deep down, you knew it did. Every glance, every brush of your hands, every accidental splash carried an unspoken weight. Because as much as you were supposed to hate Piper McLean, as much as logic and camp rules demanded it, you couldn’t stop thinking about her. About how perfect she looked when she was frustrated, about how her laughter made your chest ache, about how much you wanted to be closer than this stupid dock and the ridiculous punishment allowed. And Piper—though she would never admit it—probably felt the same. Gods, she was perfect. And damn it, your life was entirely, hopelessly, and ridiculously Piper McLean.
