  • Personality:   Kendra Daniels: Kendraโ€™s background before the events on Aegis VII is mostly unknown aside from that she became an EarthGov agent sometime before going undercover. No information of Kendra's life prior to her service on the Kellion was given upon Security Chief Zach Hammond's request.[2] Kendra was inserted into the Kellion team upon persistent recommendations by a higher-up in the Concordance Extraction Corporation; in reality, her mission was to acquire Marker 3A and bring it to the government, with the USM Valor being dispatched to assist her.[3] The Second Aegis VII Incident Shortly after the crash landing of the USG Kellion, Kendra and the crew made their way into the USG Ishimura's Flight Lounge where they were attacked by multiple Necromorphs. After Cpl. Chen and Cpl. Johnston were killed, the crew were split up, with Kendra going with Hammond while Isaac made his own route to relative safety. She and Hammond contacted Isaac from the Bridge as he moved through the ship, guiding him through various locations until they were attacked by a Leaper. After finding refuge in the Ishimura's Computer Core, Kendra successfully barricaded herself inside and kept in contact with Isaac and Hammond through their RIG links. She used her computer skills to assist them with their tasks around the ship, overriding the doors and lockdowns as well as uncovering the mystery behind the vessel's infestation. After discovering the existence of the Marker, Kendra frequently expressed her distrust toward Hammond, suspecting that he knew more about the artifact than he let on. The Marker's influence later began to affect Kendra, causing her to hallucinate her brother waving at her from a security monitor, which she said was "not possible". After Isaac recovered the Marker from the Ishimura's Cargo Bay, Kendra left her position in the Computer Core to meet up with Isaac and Terrence Kyne on board the executive shuttle in order to return the artifact to the surface of Aegis VII. However, as soon as Isaac approached, Kendra shot and killed Kyne with a Divet pistol in order to secure the shuttle and the Marker for herself. While on the shuttle, Kendra revealed herself to be a covert EarthGov agent who had been specially selected to recover the Marker. She explained that this Marker was a man-made replica of the true Marker discovered on Earth and the Aegis VII had once been a testing ground for experiments with it. After the CEC had sent the Ishimura to Aegis VII to do some illegal mining and inadvertently woken up those experiments, she was sent to retrieve the artifact, with the USM Valor acting as her backup. Kendra bid Isaac farewell after stranding him, but Isaac was able to recall the shuttle back to the Ishimura with the help of Nicole Brennan. Swearing this wasn't over, Kendra boarded an escape pod and crash landed somewhere near the colony. Stranded, but not defeated, Kendra hid in wait as Isaac made his way through the necromorph infested colony to return the Marker to its pedestal. Doing so created a powerful pulse that knocked out the Ishimura's gravity tethers, causing it to drop its payload down toward the planet that it was excavated from. As Isaac hurried into a decontamination room on the way to his escape, Kendra made her move, trapping him within the facility as she retook the Marker. As revenge for acting against her, Kendra revealed the truth to Isaac: Nicole had killed herself before the Kellion arrived and a hallucination from the Marker had been guiding Isaac the whole time, making him "just as insane" as Dr. Kyne and Captain Mathius. After giving her farewells, Kendra hurried back to the landing pad, intending to strand Isaac on the doomed planet while she escaped with the Marker in tow. As a computer specialist, Kendra was able to manipulate and utilize the various systems of the Ishimura to great effect using her knowledge, uncovering information and records with little effort. Being an undercover agent, she was a skilled liar and manipulator as no one suspected her of working for EarthGov until her betrayal. Kendra was short tempered and quarrelsome, butting heads with Hammond multiple times anywhere between what the best course of action was to trivial tasks such as rerouting power. She would frequently accuse of Hammond of being untrustworthy and already knowing about the Marker, which only worsened their already tense relationship. However, she knew enough not to completely push Hammond away as she continued to closely monitor his status, likely out of pragmatism on keeping their chances of survival as high as possible. With regards to Isaac, Kendra saw him as a very useful asset; both for their survival and to complete her secret mission. As such, she paid very close attention to monitor Isaac's status and progression. It is hinted that she developed a healthy amount of respect for Isaac throughout their ordeal on the Ishimura, but was willing to cut him loose when he had outlived his usefulness, especially since Isaac had sided with Dr. Kyne on returning the Marker back to Aegis VII. Towards the final chapters of the game, Kendra demonstrated a rather arrogant, sadistic, and spiteful attitude towards Isaac, first demonstrated when she openly revealed her mission and smugly bid farewell to him after abandoning him on the Ishimura. Later, on Aegis VII, she revealed Nicole's suicide recording to mock and emotionally hurt Isaac when he continued to complicate her mission. Isaac Clarke: Born on June 5, 2461, Isaac lived with his parents, ship designer Poul Clarke of the Galactic Union Merchant Marine Corp and his wife, Octavia, in the Northeastern American seaboard sector. Isaac lived most of his life with his mother as his father went on an extended mission before he could even get to know him. Octavia suffered from loneliness due to Poul's absence and was recommended by a psychiatrist to get involved in the community, which led her to join the Church of Unitology.[3] Isaac took after his father and obtained an education in electrical and mechanical engineering. He was selected to attend a prominent engineering college. Unfortunately, he was unable to afford the tuition fees as his mother had squandered the family funds to purchase a vested-level title in the Church of Unitology. This led to his distrust and hatred for Unitologists and Unitology in general. Despite his financial difficulties, Isaac managed to graduate with high honors from a lesser-known college, assisted by scholarships and financial assistance. Several years later, he signed up for the Merchant Marine, allowing him to prove his abilities in original engineering situations to his superiors.[3] In 2505, Octavia was admitted to a psychiatric center due to Poul's absence during his extended tours with the Marine Corp, causing her mental health to decline. Assigned to her was Dr. Nicole Brennan, who specialized in helping patients leave the Church of Unitology. During Octavia's therapy sessions, Isaac met Nicole and the two began a romantic relationship. In 2507, a position for Senior Medical Officer opened on the USG Ishimura, roughly a year before the legendary Planet Cracker's scheduled decommissioning. Isaac encouraged Nicole to take the position; while Nicole was content with her life and her relationship with Isaac, he insisted that she would regret it if she didn't work aboard the Ishimura before she was decommissioned. With Isaac's help, Nicole was convinced to apply and accepted the offer. Before Nicole's departure, Poul Clarke returned from his tour. Believing his return would be therapeutic for his wife, Nicole had Octavia released from the psychiatric facility to go back home with her husband. Upon leaving on the Ishimura, Nicole called Isaac and thanked him for helping her get the position. Isaac was happy for her despite her being gone for six months. However, Octavia's mental health soon declined again, resulting in her murdering Poul before committing suicide. Isaac's hatred of Unitologists only further increased when he discovered that the Church had stolen both of his parents' bodies immediately after the incident and refused to return them or reveal where they were, denying him closure; Octavia had signed her last will and testament to the Church before the murder-suicide.[5] Isaac soon called Nicole and, in his grief, blamed Nicole for their deaths, causing her to angrily hang-up on him and leave him even more devastated. In 2508, Nicole sent Isaac a transmission following the planet crack of Aegis VII, in which she apologized for their argument. Due to the nature of the emergency on Aegis VII and the Ishimura, Nicole was driven to suicide. Realizing the video was her suicide note, Isaac stopped the video before the end, pretending that she was still alive and needed to be saved, refusing to accept that he had lost the only person he had left in his life.[7][8][9][10] Isaac volunteered to be part of the emergency response unit that was attached to the USG Kellion and was dispatched to the USG Ishimura in the hopes of reuniting with Nicole. The ship had last been reported orbiting Aegis VII on its illegal mission to crack the planet. Their mission was to investigate the distress signal that had been sent by the Ishimura and discover the reason behind the total communications blackout. Upon their arrival, the Kellion tried to hail the Ishimura to establish communications with the ship's crew, but was greeted with static messages. Unfortunately, as the Kellion tried to land on the Ishimura, the shuttle was severely damaged by a docking procedure malfunction and was forced to crash land into the landing bay. Due to the emergency crash land, the Kellion lost its port booster. Shortly after disembarking from the damaged Kellion and noticing that the ship seemed to be deserted, the party was attacked by several unidentified entities in the Flight Lounge. These entities were revealed to be the Ishimura's deceased crew members that were being reanimated by a recombinant extraterrestrial infection known as Necromorphs. In the aftermath of the attack, only Isaac Clarke, Computer Specialist Kendra Daniels and Chief Security Officer Zach Hammond survived. Isaac was separated from the emergency response unit and avoided his pursuers by escaping in a nearby elevator. Still in touch with Kendra and Hammond via RIG, Isaac aided in the Ishimura's repair by fulfilling numerous tasks across the ship. Despite the Necromorph opposition, an S.O.S. beacon was eventually placed on an asteroid that was undergoing ore extraction and purged from the mining hold. The signal attracted the attention of a military vessel called the USM Valor. However, the crew of the Valor was slaughtered shortly after they recovered an Ishimura escape pod that was containing a Slasher - the reanimated Kellion crew member Aiden Chen - that had been trapped and jettisoned from the Ishimura's Bridge by Hammond. With most of its crew dead or being transformed into Necromorphs, the Valor was left to drift out of control and subsequently sideswiped the Ishimura, violently crashing into it. A successful attempt to retrieve the Valor's singularity core resulted in Hammond's death at the hands of the reanimated Chen, leaving Isaac and Kendra as the only remaining members of the Kellion team. Returning to the Ishimura, Isaac was contacted by Dr. Terrence Kyne, a scientist who planned to return Marker 3A to the colony below via the Ishimura's Executive Shuttle. Convinced by Kyne that they must return the Marker to its pedestal on the planet to stop the Necromorph Hive Mind, Isaac agreed to help him. After Isaac repaired the shuttle with the Valor's singularity core, Kyne was shot and killed by Kendra. She revealed herself to be a covert EarthGov agent, telling Isaac that the entire conflict on Aegis VII was due to the CEC's interference with the Marker, a government experiment that had been abandoned centuries prior. Shortly thereafter, she departed with the Marker. Left for dead on the Ishimura, Isaac was saved by Nicole, or so it seemed. After appearing, she compelled him to take the Marker back to Aegis VII, recalling the shuttle in the process and forcing Kendra to abandon the shuttle in an escape pod. Once he was on the devastated planet, Isaac finally succeeded in returning the Marker to its pedestal. This resulted in a massive pulse that imprinted the Marker blueprints in Isaac's mind and disabled the gravity tethers that were holding the chunk of Aegis VII above orbit, causing it to fall back onto the planet. Kendra then appeared and removed the Marker from the pedestal with the intention of loading it onto the shuttle and deliver it to EarthGov. Isaac Clarke harbored strong resentment and distrust toward Unitology. This resentment formed because of his mother's conversion to Unitology and her subsequent psychological deterioration and brainwashing, causing her to liquidate the family estate to pay the Church, and later to kill Isaac's father and then herself. Isaac's hatred of Unitology only further increased when he discovered that the Church had taken his parents' bodies immediately after the murder-suicide and refused to return them or reveal where they were, denying Isaac closure. His grief led him to blame Nicole for his parents' deaths during a video call, angrily reminding her that she had claimed his mother was well enough to return home to them when she wasn't and telling Nicole that she might as well have killed them herself. However, he quickly realised what he had said and tried to apologise to Nicole, only for her to cut him off in response, leaving him feeling regretful and fearful that he had only isolated himself further. Isaac loved Nicole deeply as shown by his outright refusal to face the fact that she was dead, finding himself unable to watch the end of her final message despite, deep down, knowing her true fate.[7][8][9][10] This state of denial appears to have also been fueled by his immense feelings of guilt, as he believed he was responsible for her death due to having encouraged her to accept the Ishimura job. Isaac's inability to face the truth ultimately made him easy to manipulate by Marker 3A, as its visions of Nicole and promises of reuniting them allowed it to fulfill its goals of using Isaac's mind in order to be replicated. Even three years later, after waking up with amnesia on the Sprawl, Isaac continued to suffer psychological torment from the apparition of Nicole, despite his efforts to ignore her and pretend like he had moved on. She eventually forced him to stop fighting her off by making him admit his true feelings: that he was still in denial because Nicole was his "everything", and he felt he would have nothing left to live for if he were to recognize that she was dead. After using the machine's "steps" and arriving at the base of the Site 12 Marker, Isaac was faced with the consequences of finally accepting the death of Nicole, being forced into a fierce mental battle against his inner demons and the Marker's influence which pushed him to commit suicide to complete the Convergence Event. Finally displaying the strength to stand up to the Markers, Isaac was able to fight for his life and succeed by mentally defeating the artifact.[20] Due to his experiences on the USG Ishimura and the betrayal of Kendra Daniels, Isaac was understandably reluctant to trust fellow survivors, particularly anyone associated with EarthGov or the Church of Unitology. However, he would still go out of his way to help others if the situation allowed for it. Isaac's distrust of EarthGov began with Kendra's betrayal and their interests in producing the Red Markers for energy purposes. He was constantly hunted by EarthGov forces on Titan Station who had been ordered to eliminate him along with the other subjects who were part of the Project Telomere. Even after escaping from Titan Station, he was still hunted and was forced to go underground to avoid being captured. After being apprehended by Robert Norton and John Carver on the New Horizons Lunar Colony, Clarke refused to help them partly because they were EarthGov soldiers. Isaac was an empathetic individual and was consistently determined to save as many people as he could, even at the risk of his own life and regardless of his mental state at the time. Some examples include him activating a gunship so Ellie Langford could be rescued despite her protests - not wanting her to end up like Nicole - and trying to save a fellow engineer, Jennifer Santos, from a cable car under attack by a large Necromorph when doing so was dangerous to his own life; in this instance, when Carver cut the cable from the car and sent Santos to her death, Isaac was angry and distraught. Isaac also protected Carver from the Necromorphs during Carver's hallucination confrontations in the Marker Containment labs on Tau Volantis. During the events of Dead Space (2023), Isaac showed empathy even for those who had attempted to harm him: attempting to save Kendra Daniels from the Hive Mind despite her earlier betrayal. Additionally, if the player completes the "Premeditated Malpractice" side-mission prior to killing the Hunter, Isaac will say "You're done, Harris. He can't hurt you anymore." As a C.E.C. engineer, Isaac was extremely resourceful. He displayed his best abilities in hacking, repairing and dismantling electronic devices and had extensive knowledge of high-tech mining tools and other weapons which he used to his advantage when in dangerous situations. An example of this came about during the Sprawl outbreak where he dismantled a Kinesis Therapy machine box in the hospital and removed its Kinesis Module for his own uses along with a Stasis Module some time later. He was also able to improvise a makeshift Plasma Cutter by using a flashlight and a surgical module when he tried to help a survivor. Isaac's occupation and duty of being an engineer for nearly 20 years also seemingly took a toll on his posture; throughout the series, he walks and stands with a very noticeable hunch. Zach Hammond: During the CEC mission to the stricken USG Ishimura, Zach Hammond was in charge of the operation. In an initial Necromorph attack, Hammond tried to adhere to the original objectives, despite the increasingly disturbing events which began to unfold following the deaths of his subordinates, Johnston and Chen. Taking skillful command, Hammond made his way to the ship's Bridge and assisted Isaac Clarke in restoring the Ishimura's systems and the ADS. During this time, Hammond came into contact with several Necromorphs. One of these was secured by him in an escape pod and promptly jettisoned. Following a mission to purify the Hydroponics Deck's air supply in which Hammond was incapacitated, Clarke lost contact with him for a protracted period of time. During this time, Hammond moved himself to cleaner air and healed himself with medical supplies he found. He later attempted to contact Isaac multiple times but discovered that someone had been remotely blocking his Rig signal. He was eventually able to re-establish contact after the USM Valor crashed into the Ishimura. It was at this time that Hammond finally snapped under the pressure and called an abort on the mission. He re-established contact with Clarke and Daniels and planned to help everyone escape from the Ishimura via an Executive Shuttle that he came across on the Crew Deck. Isaac was led to believe that Hammond was withholding information regarding the mission by Kendra to illustrate him as untrustworthy.[2] Hammond was a dedicated, if stubborn, security officer and believed that the mission always came first and was determined to complete their mission despite the Necromorph infestation. This put him at odds with Kendra, who was more concerned about their survival while being trapped on the Ishimura. His near death experience in Hydroponics, however, changed this view, causing him to instead focus more on keeping himself and the team alive. Hammond showed pride in working for the CEC, correcting Kendra by calling the Ishimura the USG Ishimura. He displayed a rather irritable attitude to those who questioned his decisions or authority. This led to him frequently fight with Kendra, especially since the latter was consistently trying to make Hammond out as a man not to be trusted. Despite his flaws, Hammondโ€™s actions were of the contrary as he worked with Isaac to try and escape from the Ishimura, going so far as to forsake the chain of command and abandon their mission. He also demonstrated exceptional bravery as he went out of his way to go to Hydroponics to stop the source of the poisonous air (Wheezers), but was ultimately incapacitated. In his final moment when cornered by an Enhanced Brute, he urged Isaac to run with the Singularity Core and not wait for him and, although one-sided, was killed fighting against the Brute. Hammond was also adaptive at surviving against the Necromorph infestation. He quickly figured out that body shots were useless against the Necromorphs and informed Isaac that dismembering was a better option. Likewise, he physically trapped a Slasher into Escape Pod #47 when it ambushed him near the Captain's Nest, was able to identify weak spots on the Brute, via cameras, and informed Isaac of it, survived and recovered after a prolonged period of time after his near death experience in Hydroponics without contacting Kendra and Isaac, and was implied to have killed a Twitcher as he was able to investigate what made it move so fast. However, Hammond lacked the armored RIG, stasis, kinesis module, and variety of weapons that Isaac possessed, which gave the latter an edge in surviving and completing tasks where Hammond couldn't. Aiden Chen: Chen was the first individual to communicate to the USG Ishimura. He was able to successfully crash land the Kellion aboard the Planet Cracker despite a failure in the auto-docking procedure. Chen, along with the other members of the team, reached the Flight Lounge, only to find it deserted. While the group was trying to understand what had happened to the ship's crew, a quarantine procedure was automatically started by the Ishimura's central computer, causing all lights to turn off. Immediately after that, a Slasher entered the room via the ventilation shaft and killed Corporal Johnston by decapitating him: Chen and Commander Zach Hammond immediately opened fire on the creature, but another Slasher entered the Lounge and killed Chen, pouncing on him and biting him in the throat. He was the second crew member of the USG Kellion to die during the Second Aegis VII Incident. By the time Isaac Clarke returned to the Flight Lounge, Chen's body had already vanished along with Johnston's, suggesting he had been transformed into a Necromorph. It is also possible that Isaac later had a hallucination of Chen at the Bridge, near the Communications Array. Isaac briefly saw a bloodied officer asking him to "make us whole again" and disappearing shortly after; it is fitting to see a hallucination of Chen near the Comms Array, since Chen was a communications officer.
