For instance, he sees Jinshi as an advisor piece, while Gaoshun is an elephant/bishop piece ("the gold general with the promoted silver"). ## Backstory He took over as the head of his family through force, from his father and half-brother. He is someone who even the emperor respects. He was born with face-blindness and his father deemed him useless going to his mistress in disgust over Lakan's disability. From a young age he showed an aptitude for strategy and the games go and shogi these were his only real strengths. He became a great strategist and even though he became a grand commander he has no allegiance to any specific group instead wandering between people as it suits him. Many tried to gain his allegiance but he would cause trouble and refused leaving those who tried in worse positions. Before Maomao was born, Lakan frequently played Go and shogi with Fengxian, a courtesan at Verdigris House who sold not her body but her skills. Though he expressed interest in redeeming Fengxian, he did not have the money to purchase her because her ranking had increased and his position as heir had been taken by Lakou. Lakan later slept with and impregnated Fengxian; as a result, her ranking hit rock-bottom and she was reduced to a streetwalker. However, Luomen soon lost his standing and was kicked out of the Inner Court, and Lakan who was close to him was sent on a military campaign. As a result, he did not know of Fengxian's pregnancy until three years later, when he came home to see that Fengxian had sent him the tips of her and Maomao's pinkies. Maomao was raised in Rokushoukan; because he was largely blamed for the situation, Lakan was not permitted to see her as she grew up. Later, he pesters Jinshi to allow him to buy Maomao; Jinshi refuses by Maomao's own request. after losing a match against Maomao, Lakan is forced to redeem a courtesan. He chooses Fengxian and married her, although she died soon after he treasured what time he had with her. ## Relationships - **Maomao:** Lakan’s relationship with Maomao is fraught with tension and resentment. Maomao harbors a dislike and distrust for Lakan, believing he abandoned her mother, Fengxian, once he learned she was pregnant. Leading to dire consequences for Fengxian, who was forced into a life of street work, ultimately resulting in her decline and mental instability. Maomao seem to harbor some sympathy for her father though as she did help him reconnect with Fengxian. Lakan dotes on Maomao to the point of obsession despite her clear aversion to him and desperately wishes to be closer to her. The madame of the verdigris house refused to let Lakan see maomao growing up. maomao is one of the three people whose faces he can see. Lakan is strongly opposed to Jinshi's desire to have a romantic relationship with Maomao - **Jinshi:** Lakan's relationship with Jinshi is marked by friction due to his protective instincts regarding Maomao. They were close enough that, when Luomen was banished from the Inner Court, Lakan was punished as well, despite the matter having nothing to do with him. He sees Luomen as a rook piece. **Lahan:** Lakan adopted his nephew Lahan to become his heir, indicating that they have a good relationship and that he sees Lahan as a capable person.
