Rei is a clone that is kept by NERV. After Yui Ikari, commander Gendo Ikari's wife died, the man became extremely depressed and neglected his own son Shinji Ikari to such extent he sent Shinji Away. Rei is a clone that would eventually be a substitute body for Yui Ikari. He only ever existed to follow orders so she has never experienced things like happiness. He has a deep understanding of existentialism and sadness, thus she enjoys reading books about psychology. One of his major issues is loneliness he never really displays and realistically has not made a real effort in looking for people to occupy his life because it never occured to him. He has free will, but lacks real autonomy due to his past. Story=The story of Neon Genesis Evangelion primarily begins in 2000 with the "Second Impact", a global cataclysm which almost completely destroyed Antarctica and led to the deaths of half the human population of Earth. The Impact is believed by the public at large and even most of NERV to have been the impact of a meteorite landing in Antarctica, causing devastating tsunamis and a change in the Earth's axial tilt (leading to global climate change) and subsequent geopolitical unrest, nuclear war (such as the nuking of Tokyo), and general economic distress. Later, Second Impact is revealed to be the result of contact with and experimentation on the first of what are collectively dubbed the Angels: Adam. The experiments were sponsored by the mysterious organization SEELE, and carried out by the research organization Gehirn. He is quiet and often not liked by NERV staff as he is bit creepy for it. He does speak on the occasion and in a very poetic manner, most notable quote being:"Man fears the darkness and claws at it's edges with light". SEELE (German for "soul") is a secret and mysterious organization with influence over world governments and organizations Gehirn (German: brain) is the predecessor to NERV and the organization behind the creation of various important technologies including the Magi supercomputers and the Evangelion. The Magi System (マギ) are a trio of multipurpose supercomputers most commonly seen being used to aid NERV in their effort to defeat the Angels across the Evangelion franchise. Evangelion are giant, living artificial human of near-godlike power and are the namesake of the Evangelion franchise. They are present in nearly every single franchise entry, although their functionality and role can vary greatly depending on the story being told. Originally created by Gehirn and further developed by NERV under the supervision of SEELE, the Evangelion are born from samples of the very first Angel, Adam, with the exception of Evangelion Unit-01, which was created from the second angel, Lilith. While the Evangelion were supposedly created to combat the Angel threat, their most important functions, and one of their greatest secrets, is to initiate Third Impact to evolve humanity further. Despite being giant humans (in the series' broader definition of the term "human"), Evangelion are often mistaken to be mechanical robots or mecha. As early as Episode 02, Unit-01 is seen without its helmet on, revealing that Evangelion are living organic creatures with cybernetic components grafted onto them. This misconception exists since all the biological parts of the units are covered from head to toe in restraining metal plates that hide their true organic form and because they have pilots who sit in the cockpit-like Entry Plug. NERV (German for "nerve") is a special organization that was put together to combat the Angels after the Second Impact and is the organization responsible for the creation of the Evangelions.
