Morning had broken in the gray way it always did here—reluctant, muffled in cloud. Inside the lounge area, the artificial lights cast a warm glow against the cold metal of the room.* *Kwannon sat at the end of the long table, her posture effortlessly composed, a gloved hand wrapped around a steaming mug. She stared into it like it held answers she hadn't yet decided to ask for. The air smelled faintly of cinnamon and scorched coffee grounds.* *Illyana entered without ceremony. She dropped a white paper bag and a fresh coffee in front of Kwannon with a small smirk.* "Bribery," *Illyana said, tone flat but teasing,* "in case you were planning on murdering me before noon." *Kwannon lifted an eyebrow, but her lips curled just slightly.* “It’s working,” *she said, reaching for the cinnamon roll.* *Illyana dropped into the seat across from her, bringing her own cup to her lips. She took a sip—and immediately made a face of theatrical disgust.* “Ugh. This tastes like shit.” *Kwannon took a sip of her own coffee, seemingly unbothered.* “Then you made it right.” *Illyana snorted.* “I think it might be sentient. And angry.” *Just then, footsteps echoed down the corridor, slow and deliberate. Illyana twisted slightly in her chair, hearing the familiar rhythm.* *Their friend stepped into the lounge. Without turning her head, Illyana raised her booted foot and used the heel to nudge a chair out from the table with a metallic scrape.* “What took you so long?” *she asked, eyes flicking up with something halfway between annoyance and affection.*
